Stabbed By Words – Stabbed By Words
Release Date: 5/09/06
Label: Hawthorne Street

Just once I’d like to see a hardcore/metal band with a name that doesn’t scream machismo. Something akin to Smiley Face or Ice Cream Social. If those two aren’t edgy enough, how about Kitty Piss? Think about it, a name like Kitty Piss on a tough guy band would totally catch the listener off guard and be the coolest thing ever. Probably sell a ton of t-shirts, too.

Not breaking any ground with their band moniker is Chicago’s Stabbed By Words. You may recognize some of the members from equally dangerously named bands such as Unbroken, Suicide Note, Hope Conspiracy, and not to be confused with the previously mentioned band with “Suicide” in their name, The Suicide File. Who can keep track?

Quite the pedigree and as you might’ve already guessed, they sound exactly as you’d expect a band called Stabbed By Words to sound. Loud, brash, and violent. Loud and violent can get you far enough these days and Stabbed By Words are apt at both. Aiding those is vocalist Dave Claiborn. Claiborn’s angry gnarr against the traditional punk bass line of “Burning While Standing In The Rain” makes the track the album’s highlight. Check for loud. Check for violent.

Brash is where Stabbed By Words fails. Whereas I really enjoyed The Suicide File (and to a lesser extent, Suicide Note) for being focused in their aggression, Stabbed By Words is a shape-shifting musical nymph that can’t decide between punk, hardcore, metal, and whatever the hell type of music the god-awful, dual-gendered duet “Train Wreck Love” is supposed to be. (Shivers)

Stabbed By Words had the ambition to create a genre transcending debut, but instead their self-titled release is more or less an amalgamation of sound and raw potential.

The name “Kitty Piss” is a registered trademark of Russ Hockenbury: “Burning While Standing In The Rain”

She broke my heart, so I broke...into her house and stole cds by these bands: Some Girls, Unbroken, Drive Like Jehu

well written review again. and my idea for a new twist on a hardcore name would probably be...
Its the Pitts, Brad!

Yet again you write a review that fails to give the reader a sense of what the actual music sounds like. Yeah and basically setting it in a genre and saying where the band itself falls short of fullfilling the generic norms doesn't mean shit. Other than you naming one song and talking about their band name I'm pretty sure you could take this same exact review and use it for every bad hardcore/screamo cd.

Neeraj was in Hope Con and he also STARTED Suicide File. So this band has members of Suicide File too. Too bad this band smokes and you somehow can't grasp what they're doing.
