Does anyone else feel like we need to give Pluto a call and invite him back into the group? I feel like Neptune's been getting so lonesome out there...
(Feel free to discuss whether Pluto should be considered a planet/what constitutes a planet/why we should care)

Did you watch NOVA last night??
caveBEAR
03/03/10, 09:47 PM
Ha ha ha ha, yup, I've got NOVA set on my DVR. That and nightly news.
The guy who was on last night (I forget his name) is great. He's always on Colbert and the Daily Show, and he's not only really educated on everything space, but he's really funny and entertaining, too. I owe it to him to at least learn his name, ha ha ha.

Yeah I started a book by him, and as much as I like him on t.v., I stopped about 3/4 through - granted I like to be about 3/4 the way through in a lot of books without finishing them so I shouldn't blame it on him.
Let me know what you think after you watch it. And regarding the thread topic, I dunno how I feel. I will have to read up a little and form an opinion so I can participate!

Will do.
Ha ha ha, the reason I actually wanted to start this thread was because I thought this was a subject where people could 'cross party lines' so to speak, as there isn't really a liberal/conservative, religious/non-religious debate to any of this. It's just; what do you think about Pluto.
Very simple.

I thought it was simple until I started hearing the arguments on that NOVA episode and found out the different criteria used to define a planet! Before I heard any of that, I just didn't give a shit. Now, I understand that there were reasons to remove Pluto from the planet list, and there are some reasons to perhaps keep it on the list. Pretty interesting subject... that being said, I didn't mean to take it sooooo seriously in my above post - just that yesterday I found out that there is more to it :).
EDIT - I like the topic idea. Hopefully no one else says we should nuke it! I like Pluto...

Would have been really nice if they would have decided this before my eighth grade project where I had to make a scale model of the distances between planets.
Pluto was such a pain in the ass because it was so far away.
But yea, I think they have found meteors that are bigger then pluto farther out in the orbit, so it doesn't really make sense to consider it a planet. (And lets not be stuck in our ways and please allow new developments in science.)
Pluto shouldn't of been kicked out. By the IAU's own definition of when a planet is a planet Pluto qualifies just as well as Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Neptune. The only reason it was removed is that it "hasn't cleared its own orbit", but either has Earth (10,000 near Earth asteroids), Jupiter has 100,000 nearby asteroids and if Neptune truly had cleared its orbit than Pluto wouldn't be in existence. Yeah I wrote an essay on this lol.

Actually it was just one object that was slightly larger than Pluto, UB313. And since they didn't want to add UB313 they had to make up some rule to exclude it and the only way to do that was to kick out Pluto also. It was pretty much more out of laziness then not allowing new developments in science. There was also talk of adding Ceres and Charon as planets, but they are both smaller than Pluto.

My understanding is that new discoveries about the clouds of meteors beyond pluto have made scientists believe that pluto is just a part of that group of meteors. And the fact that its orbit is way off the plane of all the other planets would indicate that it wasn't formed together with the sun and the rest of the planets.
To me, sounds like the decision was justified, not lazy.

No. Its a dwarf planet, and its not even the biggest dwarf planet. Neptune isnt lonesome, it has plenty of objects near it including Pluto and Charon, then the Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud and I could go on...the point is our solar system is full of shit that Neptune is probably hanging out with...and sooner or later New Horizons well be giving Pluto a holler so its not like its lonely
goddamn pluto freaks it gets annoying...and the only reason people even talk about this shit is because of Colbert last night or the night before. By the way, there's a dwarf planet it in the asteroid belt between mars and jupiter, its not like pluto isnt completely dissed.

Nine planets is too many for a third grader to memorize. I support Pluto's removal from the solar system (it's physical. removal. from. the. solar system.) and think we'd do well to nix a couple more planets as well, namely, Venus. Reason: bitches ain't shit.

Yes Pluto's orbit is irregular compared to the other planets and if that was the reason they decided to cast it out at least it would have made sense, but by the IAU's own definition is
A planet is any object in orbit around the Sun with a diameter greater than 2000 km.
A planet is any object in orbit around the Sun whose shape is stable due to its own gravity.
A planet is any object in orbit around the Sun that is dominant in its immediate neighbourhood. And Pluto fits that criteria just as well as Earth, Neptune, Jupiter, and Mars. And it isn't as if the decision has any scientific grounding, all there doing is trying to divide the line between "planet" and "dwarf planet." Its semantics, not science.

Blah blah blah who cares. Pluto, like all dwarfs, does not deserve to be talked about in the same sentence as the real planets (for the record, anything outside of Jupiter is not a real planet). Take a look at that rag tag group of asshole celestial bodies out there. Saturn has a ring. A ring with lots of sparky glitter. Jewelery is for women and I'm sick of Saturn spreading the liberal gay planet agenda in my conservative, Christian solar system. Uranus spins on it's side. That shit ain't natural and, for that reason, it should have never been called a planet in the first place. Planets rotate, not roll. Neptune is more popular on Sponge Bob than as a planet, which is why we might as well go ahead and ditch it in order to avoid a forth coming legal battle for the name. And fuck Pluto.

I think I hate you. How dare you decide for everyone that Warwick Davis may no longer be mentioned in the same sentence as giant floating masses. I had a lecture in a couple hours to discuss this exact thing, and now because of you, I have to rewrite my entire college thesis in 2 hours. For your own knowledge Saturn is a woman, which explains the ring cocksucker. She just so happens to be engaged to Jupiter. The reason Uranus spins on it's side is because if it rotated "normally" the entire galaxy would have to suffer from the constant and ultimately loudest ass flapping noise ever created. The simple rotation to the "rolling" position is for your own benefit assclit. Not to mention who says we're upright and that it's rolling anyway? Maybe all the other ones are rolling and it's the only one rotating. Did you ever think of that? Probably not, because you're too busy trying to bully around Neptune like a fuckin' high school jock with a little dick. So, Pluto is balls, Saturn's a woman, Neptune is not something we should ditch, and you sir, are a choad. G'day.
I agree, we need to let Pluto back in. Most of us grew up with learning it with the other planets and now that they took it away that's one less planet for the current gen to know about.

Oh, you liberal Washington insiders and your love of Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Don't give me bullshit about Saturn being a girl. Women lack the patience and work ethic required to be a planet. They'd spend half their solar year trying to decide if which direction they want to rotate. As far as I'm concerned, Saturn is only three things: a car company (and cars were invented by DUDES), a professional wrestler (see: Saturn, Perry), and a homosexual planet bent on ruining the sanctity of space.
And I know Uranus isn't spinning the right way because, HELLO! EARTH IS SPINNING ON A TILTED AXIS WHICH OBVIOUSLY MEANS THE ONLY APPROPRIATE WAY TO ROTATE IS ON A TILTED AXIS! To be honest, I wouldn't give a fuck if we got rid of all the planes, and the moon too. How dare it try and control our oceans from all the way up in the sky. In fact, get rid of the sun too. I just installed new floodlights on my back porch to keep the Puerto Ricans down the street from digging through my trash (fucking illegals). I may not have mentioned this earlier but neptune has somewhere around 1,000,000,000,000 objects nearish it...so its not lonely.
Also, on my 23rd birthday the ashes of the discoverer of pluto will be the closest any man made object has ever been to it.
