Split Enz - Dizrythmia

Post-punk, new-wave, power-pop, or whatever hyphenated genre you want to call it, the brilliance of musical magic remains at the forefront. These boys were always in a world of their own, a relentlessly original & manically energetic live band. This album was a period of transition, from "art-rock, progressive-pop" & a million other things to a more fast paced energy pop sound. Music played perhaps imperfectly, but with great passion & honesty, can create an ethereal beauty, a sense of cult classicism that like the pattern on a Chinese vase, lingers on & on & on through the mind. The masterpiece of creative energy & pop sensibilities merging. Like all great art, it is defined by all it's glorious imperfections.

Xavier Rudd - Dark Shades Of Blue

Through the course of his albums he's been known to sing vocals & play weissenborn slide guitars, 6 & 12 string acoustic/electric guitars, didgeridoos, stomp box, harmonicas, Aztec drum, slit drum, djembe, shakers, slide banjo, ankle bells, bass guitar. This album is where the usually acoustic Rudd plugs in, & in this case riffs it out like Hendrix meets a lost Aboriginal tribe. The textures here are richer & more dynamic, experimental & psychedelic than his previous releases, & the great thing about this is that the intense energy doesn't rid the album of the intimacy his material is known for. It's an artistic journey of wonder & philosophy, some moments of the album may hit you (like they did me) with an impassioned sobering effect.

http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd88/rnbmusicblogdotcom/hollieCoverFinal.jpg

Hollie Smith - Long Player

Hollie's wide range of musical influences are evident throughout this album as she combines elements of soul, jazz, reggae & R&B in a distinctive manner that vividly illustrates her organic talents. Hollie has a voice that you just need to hear, so wonderfully emotive & haunting voice, which soars, dives & floats it's way through her clever & gorgeous musical arrangements. Rich in vocal gusto, full of jazz-blues-soul-funk prowess & the good old-fashioned roots music values. Whatever style she embraces, Hollie creates an intriguing mix of sensual, melodic & earthy songs filled with depth, passion & power. One of the most soulful & emotive artists beginning to emerge.

Oh nice. Split Enz were huge on the live music culture. No two albums of theirs sounds the same, different styles, different ideas, different progressions. But one thing always remained the same, they were the indescribable sound of youth. The man in my avatar is actually the front-man of the band, & along with his brother both set off to write much more accessible sounds as solo artists & with Crowded House over the last 30 years. Venturing into the realms of folk-rock-pop. They're my all-time favourite singer/songwriters, who have always sat on the line of genius & crazy haha, especially Tim. As acclaimed & incredible as their maturing sounds are, I always crave those spirited early years, they were on such a different creative wavelength to everybody else. Always proud & resilient to just be themselves through music.

Tim started the band, Neil joined on their fourth album (the one I listed). Incredible careers, such organic & creative artistic horizons. Prolific you say? As a man who has personally spent thousands of dollars buying their entire discography, including all those fan only rarities, re-releases, un-released recordings, previously thought of as "lost" recordings, live work, books, DVDs, merchandise, rare memorabilia, travelling across the country countless times to see them perform in various forms, meeting all sorts of wonderful fans along the way, getting to know members of their management team from over the years... yea I'd say they're prolific haha. They're the very reason I ever took an interest in music, ever picked up a guitar, ever began this musical voyage I still continue today. I owe them a lot, yet they keep repaying me with further albums of great enjoyment beyond words, & live gigs that relive themselves in your mind like a montage of emotion that somehow makes sense of the feelings associated with their albums. It's more than words, or just "music" it's an experience. & I think some of us here can relate to that in our own individual way.

Sort of, when I was allowed into a band rehearsal by their manager. Got a bit of small talk & a laugh, but haven't had the chance to sit back with a beer on the deck just yet mate haha. Although once when the brothers were touring after releasing 2004's classic Everyone Is Here, I was in the front row & Tim looked straight at me & threw me his guitar pick across the stage to me. But some absolute.... (you can imagine what goes here haha).... jumped on the stage, swiped it & bolted. Wow.... if I had bumped into him again haha.

Crowded House are a great start, Woodface, with Tim, is my favourite. Intimate harmonious perfection, just like their follow up, Together Alone. Tim's solo work is where it's at for me though.

Ooo tough one, see Tim is a man of many personalities haha. But I'm going to go with his two most recent, the gorgeous piano led chamber pop record of 2006, Imaginary Kingdom. & 2008's rustically acoustic piece, The Conversation. Like all Finn records I describe them as a delicate flower. Slow to open up at first, but once they do, they blossom into a world of colour & beauty beyond all expectation. A world upon themselves.
