View Full Version : I started a band?

Ok, so i am in 8th grade. I started a band with my friends and i want some advice. We have a manager, guitar player, bassist, and a drummer. The manager got a tryout location and time. But we still don't have a name. we want to play pop punk and our biggest influence is blink-182. any ideas? I'm editing this to like explain what our "manager" does. He is me and the drummer's best friend and he wanted to help so he made flyers and posted them around our school for vocal and keys tryouts and decided to call himself the manager.
Why is there a question mark at the end of the title?

your band sounds super original already. if i were you, i wouldnt want my name to come from some random guy who suggested it to you on ap. think of something on your own, it kinda depends on your bands personality, interests, and stuff. whether you want it to have meaning or just sound cool.

Getting together with friends to play music is awesome. I remember my first band in 8th grade with my crew, it was a blast. But i'm not your friend. I don't know you or your band members, so why would I tell you your band name? Something that sounds cool? If your trying to get suggestions on something that mainly depends on you and your friends, put the instruments down now. Don't play music for others, play it for yourself. Do whatever you want man, its you and your friends, the name, style, direction etc, should reflect you and your friends alone.

Anything you can say without cringing. If someone asks you "What's your band called?" and you can say "My band is called ____" without a second thought, you've got a good name.

I never said that Selena Gomez the person was a talented vocalist or songwriter. In fact, when defending Kiss & Tell, I always give credit to the songwriters and producers and the Disney execs behind the album. Regardless of who wrote the album or what went into recording it, though, it's a good pop album. As for Demi Lovato, I don't find her albums to be as well written as Selena's, so I don't like her as much, but she's legitimately a good vocalist. I'm sorry if her role in Disney Channel entertainment somehow discredits her ability in your mind. I imagine you also don't see Taylor Swift as a gifted pop songwriter. You quite possibly are also against Kanye West's use of Auto-Tune on 808s and Heartbreak, not because you don't like it but because using that tool somehow makes his art illegitimate. I could be assuming too much here, but that's the vibe I'm getting. If I'm wrong, I'm sorry.

The music on 808s is good. I like it a lot. The vocals are awful as are the lyrics. I do not like people that think they have to be in music based solely on the fact they were in some shitty show for kids. Not only do they come in and jump on every trend in music but they do it far more poorly then everyone else doing the same thing. But people eat that shit up. It's quite sad. I think Taylor Swift is a perfectly fine pop writer. She co-writes on like everything

I see where you're coming from, but come on. Regardless of the background of the album, Kiss & Tell is full of sugary pop goodness. If it weren't by "Selena Gomez and the Scene," I don't think you'd have a problem with it, or at least not as much of a problem with it. I actually find it to be one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated "successful" albums for that same reason. People look at the cover, see that Alex Russo character from Wizards of Wavorly Place, and they instantly lose interest, even if they might have liked the songs otherwise.

Right, but it's discrediting her to say she co-writes most of her songs. She writes a majority of her own material, and the material she doesn't write solely on her own she still plays an integral role in doing so. She's also the primary writer.

Woah. You're actually discussing this reasonably now. I like this. If we continue talking like this, we could end up being, like, friends or something. If not, I'll at least see you as more than that random guy with a Circa Survive avatar that keeps pooping on my Selena fun.
Alright, well I suppose you're just not a fan then. That's fair. It's silly to expect everyone to like the same music for the same reasons (and I'm glad, as that would be boring). This is actually why I don't get your desire to complain about my Selena Gomez fandom, though. Some people have checked her out as a result of me, and some of those people have liked her album. If you find it to be stock (not necessarily something I'd argue with; it doesn't exactly push any envelopes) and boring (I love it, but to each his/her own), cool, but let other people like it. Don't constantly rain on our parades. I'm not that sensitive or anything, and I'm always down for self-parody, so I'm not trying to shun the nay-nay-sayers or anything. You know what I mean?

Kiss & Tell is one of the stronger albums of its specific brand of sugary pop I've heard, at least in my opinion. It's a consistently enjoyable and fun listen from start to finish.
I like the idea of admitting that something you listen to isn't that "good" but that you like it anyways, but at the same time, defining what's "good" and what's "bad" is absurdly difficult at best.

True. But I love The Maine. Are they good? No. Are they enjoyable? For me, yes, especially during the summer. Shitty fun pop music about girls, summer, and all that. Plus they are good people. But that is just me. I like Owl City too. And he is far from good. But i'm all for having a good time with music. So I guess if that is what you get from Selena Gomez I can shut the fuck up now

So I guess if that is what you get from Selena Gomez I can shut the fuck up now
Ha, sure. We can leave it at that.

I'm sorry but you need more than a plastic kazoo, some bongos, and a walmart acoustic guitar to start a pop-punk band.
Not to say that wouldn't make a killer band with the right people..

Ok, so i am in 8th grade. I started a band with my friends and i want some advice. We have a manager, guitar player, bassist, and a drummer. The manager got a tryout location and time. But we still don't have a name. we want to play pop punk and our biggest influence is blink-182. any ideas?
Why the crap do you have a manager? Nonononononononononononononononono.
Book your own shows. And if you've just started, you have no NEED have a manager anyways dude.
If you've just started and your biggest focus is NOT your music, I would say break up right now.
Names do not mean a THING dude. They really don't. Just throw some words together and go with it.
But I would say you need to focus on your music, first and foremost. You don't need to be managed until you start touring nationwide.

hey, awesome points, except on the name point. A name can mean alot. Honestly, first impressions can do alot. i wouldn't have listened to Jimmy Eat World when i did had it not been for the great name drawing me in. JEW changed my life.

I love how Tim & Kurt hijacked this thread and made it into another Taylor Swift throwdown.

Unfortunately most first bands break up, it happened to me about 2 months ago and I haven't talked to the singer since. Shit happens
