Here is my review of this years Warped Tour from Tinley Park, Illinois:
I had a chance to check out the Vans Warped Tour the other day when they made their stop at Tinley Park, Illinois. It was actually supposed to be the hottest day of the year but it turned out to be very nice outside, not to hot at all. It was pretty humid but as always they did a great job of providing enough areas where kids could cool off. I would like to make a point at how I am so annoyed when I see people dragged out of the crowd due to dehydration. It is irresponsible, please do not put yourself through those that. It’s really scary watching people barely able to walk, puke, and just lie on the ground as if they are literally dying. I know that may sound shallow, but I would really like to see people take care of themselves more. I bought one thing of water and continually went to the bathroom to fill it up.

Minus the people who can’t figure out the concept of water, I am proud of the crowd out here. I attended the Warped Tour in Virginia last year and I was very disappointed with the way the crowds would treat each other and the bands. I have never seen so many things thrown at people and I couldn’t figure out why one would want to do that to one another. Ya, I guess I thought that was funny in ninth grade too but I think it’s fair to say I have moved on. With all of that said, the Tinley Park crowd was not like that at all. The crowd was much smaller compared to the VA crowd but much more respectable. I saw a wide array of bands, so here is what I have to say about the bands I checked out:

Thursday:
This is about my third or fourth time seeing the band, I have a awful memory, so, like I said, this is either three or four. Anyways, they came out strong and were able to take control of the crowd instantly. The best thing about Thursday is their dead on sound and excellent stage presentation. They have said over and over again they love Chicago crowds and today was no different, everyone was moving around and signing a long as Geoff let his poetic words flow. They played one or two older songs and a ton off their new album. I know a lot of people are disappointed with the new album but I am still unable to figure why that is so, the new songs are incredible and SO amazing live. There are so much meaning behind his words, he puts a lot of emotion into everything. Geoff went into his story about the meaning of “At This Velocity” and every time I hear it I instantly get chills just because it so intense to hear coming from him. As soon as he ends his story he jumps right into the lyrics “We were safe, now we‘re paralyzed.” Make sure you check out Thursday if you have not yet.

Motion City Soundtrack:
This is my first time seeing the band in about two or three years. If anyone remembers when they toured with Over It and Northstar, well, that is when I saw them last and I am pretty sure that was a long time ago. Who remembers when Senses Fail toured with Northstar? Ya, that was so long ago as well. Okay, I’m getting off subject here. As always MCS put on a very fun show. They play with lots of energy and it seems like Justin communicates with the crowd a lot better now. I’m sure playing arena tours has made him a lot more comfortable as compared to when I saw them at Fletchers which had to be there third or fourth tour ever, maybe even first or second, I don’t know. They played a very nice mix between both release, so if you are a solid fan then you will most definitely enjoy their show. Sorry, they made no mention of Silverstein. Being so close to their hometown it felt as if a lot of close fans were in attendance because he would stop every once in a while and let the crowd sing a long, it seemed as if everyone knew the words.

Every Time I Die:
This was my selling point for Warped Tour, Every Time I Die. There is no band that is able to write lyrics such as Keith, he is a true poet. There is no band on Warped that is able to work the crowd like Every Time I Die, they are absolutely insane. I am lucky enough to see them for the second time this year and this was by far the best show I saw all day, Thursday coming in at a very close second. I have to say that Andy’s attire was pretty bad ass, an American Flag vest, it was hilarious. They played the absolute BEST tracks from Hot Damn and Gutter Phenomenon. I was so happy to see every one singing and dancing a long, these guys are going to be huge in the time to come. Before playing “Bored Stiff” Keith instructed the crowd that he wants to see the biggest circle pit of the day, if the crowd failed, he would stop and then re-start the song. He made one stop and as soon as he started playing again a stampede of kids came out of no where and we all nearly got trampled. By accident, I stuck my leg out and tripped some kid but I then picked him up. If you are reading this, I really am sorry. I really didn’t mean to do that, ha. This is one band you really do not want to miss on Warped.

The Academy Is:
I have really never been a huge fan of this band, in fact, I could never find one song that I really did enjoy. However I did check them out and yes, the crowd loves them, every one was singing a long and it is clear they have way to many friends as they all crowded the stage. They put on a good live show and if you are a fan of the band, I can guarantee you won’t be let down. What is with the flag though? Are they trying to take start an army or what?

Senses Fail:
Buddy’s voice has matured, he has a pretty sick growl. That is it. Some of the guitar work is interesting, but nothing really worth noting. The crowd seemed to be pretty big on them, if ya are a fan, you would be satisfied.

The Bled:
This was my first time seeing them live and I remember when they released their debut, I was so psyched, I thought it was such a tough album. However, I was a little let down with their live performance. I will say that having to play in the amphitheatre may have had to do with the sound, it just didn’t sound that on to me. The crowd was there in numbers, but they just didn’t seem that interested in comparison to the crowds at the other performances. They played a nice number of their original release and a few new tracks, which didn’t sound that interesting. However, I don’t even own the album so I am not able to make a fair judgment. I have always been a fan of the band and I would really like to see them play in a different setting. They do put on a brutal live show, so you can look forward to that.

SoTheySay:
They are really a catchy band, I am kind of surprised they aren’t bigger then they are. They put on a really energetic live show and everything sounded great live. They had a pretty big draw and noted that we treated them much better then their hometown of St. Louis. See? Chicago is a great city, even though this was in Tinley Park, not Chicago. They played pretty much everything off their debut from Fearless and one song off their previous EP. I can’t remember the name of the track off the EP but I will say it was pretty tough, something I wouldn’t really expect from them. I kind of felt they had a edgier side but when they broke into that track I was really taken by surprise. Make sure you check these guys out if you are fans of Hit The Lights, This Providence and My American Heart.

The Junior Varsity:
This was the last band I saw of the night and every time I see them they get better and better. I feel like I say this to much, but once again every thing sounded spot on. Make sure you check them out!

All in all, this Warped Tour was a lot better then last years. The weather was nearly perfect, I still got sun burned and I drank enough water. To everyone else - just drink water, that is all.

I was talking about the crowd in comparison. Think ya misread that. I had more fun this year for some reason. I only really watched Circa Survive and Thrice last year. I don't even remember who played.

The bands this year frankly stunk for the most part. Even the main stage was mostly enjoyable last year, but this year it was pretty poor (and we even had UO for our date). There's a reason ticket sales are way down, and I think a lot of it has to do with the influx of screamo bands on the tour (even last year to this year, although that trend has been increasing over several years).

No, I don't think it has anything to do with "screamo" influx at all. That's just me. Just this year there are no Fall Out Boy caliber bands. Last years Warped was right on the verge of the take off of the band.

good review, haha i hope that every time i die guitarist cleans his vest because he wore it up here in calgary on the 20th. I thoroughly enjoyed Motion City when i saw them here as well, so much fun. another band that blew me away was Saves the Day. I don't know why. I think it was just how much emotion Chris was singing with, and how brutal the crowd was for them. but wow. And Against Me was crazy good as well. I had a great time at this years Warped. I guess for those not agreeing with the fact that it was as good/not as good as last year. It is what you make it.

Last years Warped was right on the verge of the take off of the band.FFTL, Underoath, Motion City Soundtrack, and The Academy Is. None of them will be Fall Out Boy-big, but those four bands (especially the first two) have a ton of fans at every date. Yes, I know the first two also have dropped off, but sales were way down even before that. We set records last year in South Florida, they moved it to a different venue (which is closer to a major city) and sales went down a lot. The pits were noticeably not filled, where last year you couldn't move. Talking to bands and people on the tour, sales are down all over the country. This is simply a much weaker lineup than years past, and it shows.

Haha, you crack me up Tony. Anyways, I still think this year was a great line up. I had a lot of fun. I can't even remember who was that strong last year. All I know was that Fall Out Boy was the biggest band, I didn't even stay around to watch them.

I think Thursday is amazing and I was able to watch a bunch of bands this year that I enjoyed compared to last year when I only fully watched Circa Survive and a little bit of Thrice. I will say that I think Ernie Balls stage was a lot strong then last year in comparison.

Last year had The Offspring, MxPx, Fall Out Boy, Dropkick Murphys, Motion City Soundtrack, My Chemical Romance, for starters. The comparable bands this year were Underoath, Against Me!, Thursday, ETID, Less Than Jake, and NOFX. Advantage: last year both in fan appeal and bands I enjoy (although UO, AM, and ETID are pretty good).

Because you are so over the top. It's all good man. Last year was better in sales, you made your point Tony. I just think this years line up was better, I could give a shit less about how many tickets were sold and how many albums each band has sold.

I'm a little confused by that comment, if you are trying to pick a fight with me over the internet, that is pathetic. Okay.

Geoff wrote that song in releation to what happened when they were touring with The Mars Volta and Poison The Well over in Australia. In order to get to each show you would have to cross a desert to get to the next venues so they used planes. On one particular occasion the cabin lights came on which signaled there was a problem. Geoff made a statement about the plane drastically losing altitude and someone instructed Geoff to look out the window and they noticed they were dropping fast and parallel with the ground, fucking scary. I forget his name but someone asked Geoff if he was going to pray and he replied, "I don't know." One movie Geoff will hate for ever is "Second Hand Lions" because as they were heading towards the ground (I am so bad w/ names) his friend looks at him and says "is this the shitty film going to be the last fucking movie we see?"

I think I have that pretty much dead on.

I was there. Another thing: Security was REALLY relaxed about wristbands. I used my band from Indiana and gave a friend another band I had gotten at a previous Warped to wear and we were admitted sidestage for everything. Granted, I was pretty much by the Smartpunk stage all day, but I tried it for the Academy Is and it worked too.

I went..it was really hot out but if you drank enough water you'd be okay... I was one of the first 50 there and onw of the last out... I saw gym class heroes, hellogoodbye, senses fails, emery, the audition, cartel, the academy is... and rise against...

I had a great time but I don't think it was as good as last years line up though...
I mean last years line up was a lot more likeable by everyone compared to this years line up..plus not too many (if any) bands left... I think fftl and underoath leaving factored into how good of a time I had

FFTL, Underoath, Motion City Soundtrack, and The Academy Is. This is simply a much weaker lineup than years past, and it shows.

aaaaaaaagreed. there aren't too many bands i'm that interested in seeing this year at warped..but none the less..it's an even that just can't be passed up. hopefully it will be fun..too bad dc is near the end..i. should have taken advantage of the fact that columbia was the first date on the tour and gone.

the reason that st. louis didn't treat sotheysuck very well is because not a lot of people here actually like them. but that's just me. everyone i know hates them here.
The band was 3 months old when they were signed. That's why there's a lot of "hatred" towards them from stl kids and local bands here.
Justin and nick are some of the nicest guys though.

Was it just a press/photo wristband? because I never tried getting sidestage for that. I just shot pictures, and they were strict and threw us out after three songs, which is what they are supposed to do.

damn it... YOURE the reason TAI had to hurry with their signing...
Charlie (FOB's Security Guard) was making sure people didnt stop and talk to long...
he was like "they need to do press after this... so hurry it up kids"

NO!!! I did my interview at 2, the signing was several hours later. i got kicked out of line for that because I am so short they just missed me sitting there and didn't hand me a laminate. i explained what happened and they apologized and wouldn't do anything about it. it reallly made me mad, they accused me of cutting in line, which isn't a big deal, but it was embarrassing because i didn't do that.

You missed Moneen, which was easily my favorite set of the day. I wish ETID and STD acoustic didn't overlap. I only saw two songs off ETID's set and it was while I was walking to the Vagrant stage.
