This is something I've always wanted to do. I really want to plan one for within the next year. I was wondering if anyone's ever done this. How long does it take?/How much does it cost?/Where did you go?/ Any other stories/advice/tips.

I just planned one from Arizona to California today. My friends and I are going to go to a theme park, the beach, the casino, and white water rafting. Costs like $275 each total for everything.

When I was a bit younger, my family and I drove from California to Tennessee. It took a week, and as far as I'm concerned my parents had a thousand dollars or so (which is reasonable considering there were five people and a dog in a van). My advice is to pack a lot of batteries, because regardless of where you're going, there are different and unique things you're gonna want to photograph. And definitely make sure that your car is checked and ready before you go, otherwise you'll be stuck in the middle of nowhere with oil problems... which is not great at all.
Don't forget food and water. You may need that most.

I drove from Phoenix, AZ to Venice, FL. Venice is about an hour south of Tampa. It took about 4-5 days. It was mostly fun, but there just comes times where things get boring as fuck. We literally drove for hours on end through Texas and not seeing a thing.
The best advice I can give you, which everyone else will say to, is plan really well. Put in your car flashlights, road flares and other things like that. You can buy a nice road trip type bag thing at Wal-Mart for like $20, has everything you need. Don't forget to check that you got a spare that is up to par. Then of course, food and water and place to sleep. The big expense will be gas, so if you're car has cruise control, I highly suggest you use it. Also, checking the PSI in your tires will be a big help too. Do it before you start and at every stop you make.
All in all it'll be an amazing experience, it was for me.

on my trip from IN to CA, i spent less than that, was gone for two weeks, and drove 3 days to get to/from CA each way.

well my mom is one of those paranoid parents, so she made sure we had extra money in case.. which was useful because my dad didn't check the oil before and the car broke down.

Having taken quite a few field trips in my day, i can tell you that everything said here is phenomenal advice. Listen to all of this.
The most important things in my travels (aside from all of these things), were really water, a spare tire (with gear to change it), and a general gameplan of where I was going/when I was going to be there/with whom I was going to crash. Road trips are the real-life explanations of "it's the journey, not the destination." Plan the important parts and then just enjoy the rest. Don't worry about speed-racing to your destination. If you see something goofy - do it. I spent two hours at a mexican-themed circus carnival in south carolina that was only fun because it was completely absurd. I couldn't have planned for it.
Anybody else been to South of the Border?

That's actually a really good idea. It's a perfect distance, long but not too long. I'm gonna think about that one.

I drove from Houston To Hollywood. Stayed there for a few months. Then drove from LA to vegas, then Vegas to Breckenridge Colorado. Then back to Texas. All in all the journey lasted most of my summer. The actual drive was probably a couple hundred dollars worth of gas money. But it was so worth it. The drive from Vegas to Colorado was the most beautiful drive I've ever taken. I love going on long solo road trips, nothing but you, the road and your thoughts.

I've been snowboarding there like 4 times. What's it like in summer?

I was only there for about a week but for the most part the weather was great. It got cold at night but during the day it was a perfect 60-70 degrees outside. It rained a couple of times but overall it was great.

There is nowhere far enough really. I mean Cornwall probably but that's still under a days drive. I think interailing is where it's at, which I plan to do this summer.

i definitely wouldn't be doing it in England. Maybe drive across Europe?

Driving across Europe could work but then you might as well interail. I think it would probably work out cheaper plus you need to 21 to drive on the continent don't you? I'm fairly sure you do.
Just a group of friends. Hopefully it won't fall through and I'll actually get to go.

Yeah, but I feel like doing the drive would be part of the fun. Yeah...I'm not actually planning it, I's just love to do it at some point.
Are there any countries that you're going to give a miss?

Yeah I can see the appeal in driving it.
Well it really is just a bare bones idea atm. We've come to the decision of going in early September but other than that it's still all open. We can do a lot more planning once people are all back from uni and we can all have a chat.

England isn't so bad, me and a load of friends road tripped to Newquay and stayed about a week there, had a blast and it cost very little. Europe would be better though. A friend and I are planning on doing some kind of world tour after I finish my degree/masters.

I just don't think it would be big enough to be a road trip. You can get everywhere in under a day. I'd much rather cycle through England of something.
Wow...how are you planning on funding that?

My masters will have far less contact time so I can get a job to put money aside, also I'll be working through all the summers between now and then so I can save from that too. It may never happen or be smaller than we wanted but it'd be amazing if we managed it. I guess you're right about England being too small, despite getting lost the whole journey only took about 6/7 hours.
