Lately, I've noticed that a lot of music in my library is depressing as shit. I need something that is upbeat and has good melodic sense as opposed to slow and full of overwhelming and monotonous ambient build-up.
Some bands close to what I'm looking for are: The Format, Gabriel the Marine, John Nolan, Straylight, Nightmare of You, etc. I realize these bands are all pretty different, but that's the point. I'm not looking for any specific genre or sound, merely some music with an upbeat atmosphere and a prominent melody.
I'm not looking for pop-punk. Don't reccommend me something like Four Year Strong or the Wonder Years. Not for me.

Anberlin works. lol I have a crapload of depressing stuff too. umm..
If it doesn't HAVE to be rock, definitely check out Owl City. This guy is the only thing on the radio that I enjoy.
Let's see.. Default is also pretty upbeat, as is Last Winter. Try those.

alkaline trio?
Not to be a dick, but I asked for bands that were not depressing and aren't pop punk. Alkaline Trio has heavy influences of both punk and pop, and their lyics are generally about alcohol and drug abuse, depression, suicide, etc. Not really what I'm looking for.

Let me preface this by saying I typically dislike rap. BUT...
My friend is a rapper here in New Orleans. He's writes the most intelligent rap I've ever heard:

Listen to "Brand New Day" and "Sharpshooters". His music is pretty cheap to download and it's really good.

Check out The Dispensed- www.myspace.com/thedispensed . They are upbeat, good melodies, and positive lyrics (at least most of the record is) with amount of edge thrown in. However, they might be a bit too close to poppy punk for your taste.

I don't know if you would dig the style, but OAR is upbeat, and you can't really put them in a genre, atleast their old shit. Their new stuff could def be put into a genre, and its okay, but if I were you try their first album "The Wanderer" and their 4th studio album "In Between Now and Then". In regards to what they sound like, they are a mix of reggae, indie, and maybe some jazzy riffs.

Hey man I've got a few recommendations for you from my music library. If you enjoy bands like The Format I think you might enjoy the new albums by Freelance Whales, Rogue Wave, or even Spoon- Transference
Also if you want something upbeat with still a strong sense of melody I would check out Balkan Beat Box. They are unique as they mix different styles into their music
