You're asking a good question...so I'll do my best to explain. First of all, it's what Jesus would do. In Matthew 5:43-48, he tells his followers to "love their enemies and pray for those who do wrong to them". After hearing a lot of Fat Mike's comments, my first reaction was anger and disgust towards him. But after thinking about it, I realized that Fat Mike didn't need some angry email from me telling him to burn in hell...he needs prayer. All of the things that he highlights when criticizing Christianity are the negative abuses of it. Jesus never taught his disciples to hate homosexuals or support the war in Iraq. I'm praying that Fat Mike will realize that Jesus taught people to love their neighbor and to care for others. In addition to that, he suffers from alchoholism, something that can be really dangerous and harmful to him, I'm hoping that God will heal him (alchoholism is considered a disease) and that he can take better care of himself. While I admit, I would be happy if he became a Christian, that's not what the prayer is about. It's for him to understand the teachings of Christ better and a prayer for his health and safety.

on this i have 3 theories:

1- a twisted yet not quite inaccurate interpretation of the golden rule: vocal fundamentalist christians do not respect other religions so this is some people's ways of getting back at them by giving them the same treatment (notice i said fundamentalist, not all. Im a christian and I do not judge unless I am judged in return or judgement is warranted)

2- it's fun to offend christians because they tend to make the biggest fuss

3- as with the concept of racism against whites, as christians are the largest religious majority, they cannot cry foul when people poke fun at them. (I do not agree with that concept tho, but ive been told you can;t be racist against the majority, which i feel is BS)

ok i only read the first page of posts, so i dont know the current state of the conversation, but i have a question i really want answered.
how come openness and acceptance of peoples views and opinions are preached all over this website, but thats never extended to christians?
its the general practice to disrespect, belittle, and attempt to offend christians based on their beliefs, but if this were done with any other religion/way of life, you people would be up in arms about it.

Everything from the Crusades to hatred towards homosexuals are things that intolerant, bigoted people hav done while claiming to be christians. I still believe in God, I just don't believe in the whole "Jesus was his son" thing. I agree with some of the principle beliefs of christianty; but in my experience organized religion never works because it's based on a hierarchy. All people are inherently greedy (it's basic animal instinct), and having a position of power in said hierarchy just makes you hungry for more.

I'm very pessimistic, I know.

Because I dont like the preaching to people who don't want to hear it. The other day I was approached by these three men from the local church in my community. I respectfully say I don't have any interest in what they have to say however, they persue me down the street to talk to me about some bullshit about my spirit that remembers everything. I again, respectfully say I believe in science and not religion but these people are so persistant. Alot of Catholics try to shove religion down your throat. It's not that pessimistic. It's understandable. To say organized religion never works seems to be a bit of a problem in my books, though: if it never works, how come these religions have existed for so long and continue to be so strong?

Well, these people aren't trying to shove religion down your throat they simply made a thread about praying for fat mike. This shouldn't be offending people. They're fighting for the purity of Christianity and against its current perverse public form/image and while I may not agree with the current state of Christianity, or necessarilly believe in the religion, I can respect what they are doing when they are all for the 'Peace, Love and Forgiveness' side of it. I mean we definitely need a lot more love in the world, take some of the mean-spirited comments in this thread for instance.
