View Full Version : Such Great Heights

it's such a good song, regardless of if you choose Iron & Wine or The Postal Service, or possibly even Ben Folds. But recently, someone has brought this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GncK6IuY8OA) to my attention. At first I thought it was a joke, but it is not so.
It saddens my heart that talentless bands will take works of art, and throw in one-chord "breakdowns," beached whale vocals, and release it as their own. Don't get me wrong, I have always been a fan of ADTR's "Since U Been Gone," but this is too far.
Thoughts?

Confide's original music is awesome. Joel nails the chorus on this cover. They're just having fun and I wouldn't exactly call them talentless but you obviously didn't even listen to their debut album. This cover may be chords and a breakdown because it's a cover and again they're just having fun.

I have a soft spot for "heavy" covers of "non-heavy" songs. They're just fun.

Confide is terrible. Also, grass in green, bananas are yellow, and the sky is blue.

Me too.
I think this cover is pretty good. Obviously, if you don't like the genre you're not going to enjoy this but I don't mind a bit of whatever people are calling this genre nowadays.

Iron and Wine's cover is pretty bad (his own work is so much better), but I don't really like the original either.

The original version of Since U Been Gone was perfect for every pop punk band to cover, ADTR did it, and make it sound even better. Just sayin'
Such Great Heights has an intimate, nocturnal feel that electronic vibes and Gibbard's voice make it soft and gentle. Singing it with pointless screams and an auto-tuned whine in the chorus, whatever name your band has, is, in my humble opinion, fun for you but puke for me. It has the effect of an elephant's foot on my balls..it hurts..
P.S. Having long hair and headbanging for a band that tries to imitate Underoath doesn't make you cool. At all.

I'm not one for the screamo scene but as mentioned before the chorus is pretty catchy. Their standing in place skipping routine towards the end of the video made me bust up laughing.

possibly the worst cover i've ever heard. i'm all for 'heavy' covers of non heavy songs but this is just completely retarded.

i very much enjoy both versions of the song, but the TPS version seems a bit repetitive to me. quit bitching people. a band decided to cover a song they like. move on with your lives.

well said. Exactly why this song shouldn't be covered by such a band as Confide.

you do realize that people who "bitch" in threads like this only spend a couple minutes of their whole day watching the video and responding about it right? It's just not big enough of a deal to tell people not to do it.

exactly. they should have the freedom to cover what they want how they want to... but to put it on an album and make a video for it? getting credit for others work is just no good.

it's not TERRIBLE, there's no problem with having fun with a song you like. Just because it's a different genre from the original doesn't mean it's an awful cover.

It being awful is what makes it an awful cover.
I don't mind genre-crossing covers, in fact, I quite enjoy them.
