I guess I'll do it before someone comes in and tries to ream you a new asshole for making this thread: there have been countless topics about this before. A lot of people on here care about that, so be prepared for backlash. Future reference, search for the thread name before you post a new one and you'll avoid all the douchebaggery.

Thanks dude. I heard Inertiatic ESP and Eriatarka back in like 2007, my first experience with the Volta. Liked it but never got into their entire discography. So around the time that staff Albums of the Decade feature was posted (Jan?) De-Loused was mentioned as a pick so I decided to revisit them. It's been a two month jizz fest ever since. De-Loused and Frances were the obvious standouts, but Amputechture kinda took the backseat to the flashier Bedlam for me. The more time I've spent with Amputechture lately the more and more I love it though. It's criminally underrated. It would prolly be my favorite if it had that darker tone like the first two. /End of rant haha

thats awesome. amputechture is definitely a dark record, in many ways darker than the first two. just listen to vicarious atonement, that shits fucking sinister. as for bedlam and their latest octahedron, i find them to be for the most part, letdowns just because they simply don't have the youth and energy of the first three records. you should check out the tremulant ep.

Ha yeah you make a good point. The bass is so simple on Vicarious but it gets across that sinister feeling so effectively. The swirling atmospherics as well give off that feeling of like walking through the dark alone or something. Only song on Amputechture I tend to skip over is Asilos, it's good but feels so out of place for me, especially where it was placed. I feel you on your complaints with Bedlam and Octahedron though, although I stll think they are pretty good record in comparison to a lot of other shit you hear today. Bedlam has fantastic instrumentation but kinda bleeds together for me. Octahedron I liked a little more (Cotopaxi is awesome), but for the majority the lack of that energy and bombastic nature makes it feel like it's not really them. I actually have Tremulant because I heard Concertina on the Scab Dates album and really liked it, but haven't spun the original too much yet. I've been listening to a lot of Omar's solo stuff though, there's a lot to listen to and he's hard to keep up with, but there's some really good stuff.

definitely man. that's chill that you're getting into all that. i remember hearing deloused wayyy back in middle school like in 2003 and being like 'holy fuck what issss this?' they're definitely a wonderful band.
as for octahedron i cant really listen to it, other than teflon. that song slays. the rest of the album in the songwriting, singing and production ultimately just feels like a parody of themselves to me, almost nu metal and far to radio-rock friendly. but i can understand that considering they said it would be their pop record, and they are on warner brothers so it makes sense. it just sucks because i know they are fully capable of throwing it down like their earlier stuff. bedlam to me is just a shitstorm (in a bad way) vocally. the drumming was fantastic but not necessarily musical, and the production was waaaaay off. some of the instrumentals are pretty tight but omar's solos have been getting pretty lazy to me starting on that record.
definitely get back into that tremulant ep though. all of those songs are super dark, cut that city rips and eunuch provocateur has the darkest fucking guitar tone in the beginning.

Yeah I can understand feeling that way if you were into them right from the start. It's probably easier for me to get into the newer records because I don't have all that nostalgia of hearing the older stuff when it first came out. I was actually more into like typical emo/indie and melodic hardcore back in 03 so they didn't really cross my radar. Really? I'm not even going to confront your absurd statement that age should dictate what a person likes to listen to. (I'm a 21-year-old that listens to Selena Gomez and the Scene. What do I know?) Deja Entendu is far from an "emo" album. You do realize that "emo" is a genre term, right? I mean, sure, it's become rather convoluted and was never really the preferred term for the genre (with Ian MacKaye making fun of the term years ago), but if it ever was a valid way to describe music, Brand New didn't fit it.

...

firstly, i never said "age should dictate what genre of music people listen to..." i'm not sure why you allowed your imagination to convulute a post you read on the internet. besides the point, i merely thought it funny that the guy was still listening to brand new at that age. when i think of brand new i think of middle schoolers growing up and just getting into "alternative" music scenes. they were a youthful band, making simple, not complex music, that was easy to listen to but somewhat different from the mainstream. that aside,

brand new is an emo band. that is their genre. i used to listen to them myself. there's like 4 emo acoustic ballads alone on deja entendu. 'the quiet things' is one of the most stereotypically emo songs in existence. it doesn't matter if they wear all black or have scene combovers or anything like that, that album presents itself as based around negative energy, feeling sorry for oneself, girls, heartbreak, etc.
it's laughable that you believe brand new is not an emo band.

Isn't the latter bolded statement an example of the former? Perhaps not, but it certainly seems to imply that there's something bizarre about a 23-year-old liking alternative rock/power pop.

Wrong. Do some research into what defines "emo," preferably outside of Wikipedia, Rolling Stone, and MTV.

Isn't the latter bolded statement an example of the former? Perhaps not, but it certainly seems to imply that there's something bizarre about a 23-year-old liking alternative rock/power pop.

Where were you last night when this toolbox was running rampant? Hahaha. Your logic will only bounce off this troll. He's very concerned with being too cool for stuff, because that's what people his age do. Didn't you do your annual purge of music you're too old to still like?

Ha, I bet he'd frown upon the fact that I went out of my way to pick up Kiss & Tell yesterday, even though I already have a copy on my iTunes that I illegally downloaded.

Probably. I, however, think that's awesome. I'm working on a cover of "Naturally" btw. Not sure how it's going to some out, but I'm intruigued.

If I were to ask this guy what I should be listening to as a 23-year-old, what do you think we would suggest? I desperately want to be age-appropriate. Even if it means not loving albums that came out when I was 16.

Obviously the Mars Volta. They aren't extremely pretentious at all.

Probably some shoegaze, krautrock, and other really cool-sounding genres like that.

I like them. Especially when I have a fastforward button to skip past 4 minutes of crickets chirping to enjoy the good part of "Miranda That Ghost..." Most musically masturbatory band since Dream Theater.

I'm sad that I can't name one band in either of those genres. Is My Bloody Valentine shoegaze? Haha. I don't know genre names at all.

Yeah, they're kind of essential listening as far as shoegaze is concerned. While talking about this genre, I really like The Fauns, so go check 'em out, or we're not friends, but not really, but seriously, I like 'em.

See I like AtDI, but they only really have one magnificent record for me. So wading through the nonsense Mars Volta drowns their songs in is worth it for the nuggets of genius they intersperse it with. Except when they write a record like Amputechture, where there are none of those nuggets.

The Great Disappointment by AFI.

I recently heard one of my friends' composition on piano of this song and I was astounded by its beauty. Lyrically, I think it's perfect and really is a page out of my own life on how I view religion.

yeah i heard they're kind of on a break now or something
they just got yet another new drummer so i have a feeling a new record might not be in the works at the moment
knowing omar who knows

have you gotten his acoustic trio record yet? it's not bad.

Oh really? Do we know the new guys name yet? I'll be interested to see how he stacks up against Jon and Thomas, hopefully his style falls somewhere between the two. And are you talking about Ciencia de los Inutiles? If so yeah, I've heard it. Obviously it dosn't stack up to The Mars Volta, and I like quite a few of Omar's other solo records over this one, but it is definitely very refreshing to hear this raw, low-key, and acoustic side of him. Great when I'm in the mood for something very chill. I really like his girlfriends voice and the Spanish language sounds absolutely beautiful sung by her.

yeah i was talking about ciencias. not all the songs are great (track 2 seems wayy too sappy to me), but i like it more than anything omar's put out in the last year. i keep listening to 'domingo,' it's a really beautiful song.

the new guy is named david elitch. he's a good drummer but nothing compared to jon, and definitely not as good as thomas. he's from a num-metal / metalcore / gospel background, which personally scares me. he's also pretty old apparently, or so i've heard. i think he might just be temporary but who knows. from their performances on youtube he tends to drag along the tempo, basically he's skilled but brings nothing new to their sound. kind of a bummer.

Ha this is such a late reaction, but I haven't been on AP for a few days surprisingly. So far the the minimalistic approach and sadness of Lunes has stuck out to me the most. I love the electric part too that sounds like whales singing. You are right on with Domingo too. It's definitely an interesting addition to his discography. I was more partial to Xenophanes though, the songs Flores de Cizana and Maria Celeste back to back kick serious ass. Ciencias was more fun to listen to than Cryptomnesia though. Overall I'd say my favorite record in his solo career would be Apocalypse Inside of an Orange, I can't get enough of the first two songs on that one.
I checked out a few of Elitch's vids on youtube and I definitely think they could do a lot better. He's definitely no Theodore or Pridgen, but then again that is a pretty high standard to have to live up to. The couple of songs I watched him play he was pretty much just pounding the shit out of the kit, no real feel or nuance to his playing. Hopefully jamming with them and having this year off will do something for his technique. I'm digging the fro though haha.

yeah i think elitch is a great drummer but considering he u're right, he used to play in shitty nu metal bands im not so sure how i feel. you're right, it does seem like he just pounds the kit, but that's essentially all pridgen did (though obviously, pridgen did it much much better). jon theodore was the best in my opinion because he actually new how to play at lower volumes, he wasn't all about playing flashy shit. for a drummer, quiet defines loud. i feel like thomas just murdered deloused songs in quieter sections. there wasn't any dynamic quality to his live performing.
my favorite record of his would have to be manual dexterity, simply because it shows the most restraint and refined songwriting. even the guitar solos are carefully calculated, and the production is so much better on that record than anything he's put out since 2006. the first three songs alone slay so hard, and the whole thing just has such a nostalgic quality about it.
