My roommate got angry at me because I put the plates and stuff in the dishwasher without washing it down. Dishwashers are suppose to wash dishes! Why the hell do some people wash the dishes prior. They come out spotless either way.

None of the above. I have a dishwasher but don't use it, I prefer to wash dishes by hand.

Ditto.
It's faster to just clean them by hand right after you use them.

my dishwasher sucks, plus it was a habit brought down from my family.
I don't even use a dishwasher. Doing things manually for the win

i just lick the plate till its clean before throwin it in the dishwasher. or get the dog to lick it, cause she's gonna lick it before it goes in the dishy, shes gonna sticks her head in there and has a crack at the scraps anyway

You can't put it in the dishwasher when it still has a bunch of food on it. Even if its a stellar dishwasher, the idea of all that food mixing with the water and getting on all the other dishes is really gross to me

Yeah, pretty much only when that stuff is stuck to the dish.

man now i feel bad. As long as a half eaten steak is not stuck to the plate i throw the dirty dish in the dishwasher. I hate washing dishes by hand unless the sponge is brand new.

Our dishwasher, though rather new, is a piece of crap. I normally at least rinse all the dishes before putting them in the washer. We used to have to wash and dry by hand in Home Ec. That just doesn't seem sanitary...

I just wash my dishes by hand. If I do use a dishwasher then I rinse them, just so there's no food stuck to them

I rinse. Depending on what's on it, I may even let it soak for a little bit.
The question is, do you load a bunch of shit at the bottom of the washer so nothing on the top rack gets clean?

This. we basically just use our dishwasher as another storage unit for dishes and utensils.
yeah, i always wash my dishes before i enter the dishwasher
.. does no-one else think the thread title is worded really strangely?
Yes! Exactly. The way that it's phrased it sound like you are going into the dishwasher not the dishes themselves. Haha

Well depending on how often you was dishes, food could be sitting in the dishwasher for a while, which can cause it to go bad. & it's still there when the whole thing fills with water, so you may have spoiled food sloshing around all over your plates and such. The hot water would most likely kill the bacteria or whatever but it's still a gross thought for me.
There was actually a study done that showed that washing plates before you put them in the dishwasher is bad for dishes. The point of dishwasher soap is to attack the food/crap left on the plate, but when the plate is already clean the soap starts to break down the dishes instead.

I wish I HAD a dishwasher. But when I did have one, I did rinse my dishes off before I put them in the dishwasher most of the time.

My housemates never wash the crap off their plates before putting it in the dishwasher, it's unbelievable how much is left in the dishwasher after the plates etc have been cleaned. Pretty bad. Sometimes there is still food left on the dishes.
well some washers suck at their only job, so i do prewash.
i have read that doing this fucks up the dishes though because without food particles for the detergent to work on they just eat away at the dishes. i feel like i read that on this site actually.
(just noticed this has been said, disregard)
