View Full Version : AP's 100 Bands You Need To Know

So, I just picked up my copy of April's AP magazine and was wondering what thoughts were, for those who read it, on the annual "100 Bands You Need to Know" list. Personally, I think there are a lot of great bands worth knowing on the list, once you get past the four or five mediocre featured bands. I actually asked one of the employees at Barnes and Noble to check their stockroom so I could buy an issue without Christofer Drew on the cover. So...thoughts?

AP's now hitting the Pitchfork crowd?

Also, many of those bands are far from obscure.

Why am I analyzing Alt Press?

TerrancePryor

I sent AP an e-mail stating that they failed to add Action Item to that list. There's only 12 bands on that list that are going to do something this year.

03/15/10, 10:12 AM
Deas Vail
Flood of Red
Freelance Whales
Inhale/Exhale

I'll second all of these and I'll probably pour through the list later to see what else is tasty.

Judging by last year's list, the percentage of bands that actually do get big isn't too great.

Also Andrew Jackson Jihad's been around for a while, so I thought it was funny that AltPress's just now getting around to noticing them...

I'll admit a bunch of bands on that list are pretty meh, but Lights being on that list makes complete sense. She's had so much success over the past year (radio airplay, warped tour, solid fanbase).

So why would she be on this year's list? If she's had so much success, people already know who she is.

I still walk into some people who don't know about Phoenix, yet they're a Grammy award winning band. It's just a question of getting the name to the people who haven't heard about it yet.

I only pick up this magazine when there's an article I know I want to read inside or when it is this issue, because in my opinion the magazine itself is pretty awful. But yeah, most of my music comes from seeing openers at concerts, buying eps and suggestions so I like the opportunity to go through and check out some new bands (espeically with this "rocks like" part that AP includes. I've been checking out the myspaces of bands that I think I might like for a few weeks.

This year:

-The Bigger Lights
-We Are the in Crowd
-Junior Battles
-Two Hours Traffic
-The Ready Set
-Hockey
-We Are the Union
-Let's Get It
-Honor Bright
-The Wonder Years
-Meese
-The Downtown Fiction
-Terrible Things

I'm kind of meh on Stereo Skyline and Hey Monday.

And I've been a fan of the Cab and Every Avenue for quite a while, and the Summer Set has been getting a lot of play in my car recently.

they're terrible. its all auto tune and stuff. they used to be a legit pop punk band with keyboard and they they kicked everyone out and got "big". now those guys are in like score24 and set in color, not my style but much better than stereo skyline
