View Full Version : Music Mends Broken Hearts

It's obvious that this site doesn't talk about punk music at all (as in the front page there is Lady GaGa news) but sometimes underlines punk ethics and it's involved in bringing to light indiependent bands that really need to be discovered. And we all know that as long as this site will be runned by music fans (like me, you, us) and human beings some bands will be, maybe fairly, overrated (I'm looking at you, Brand New) and others will be underrated and opinions will be different every time.

So, as the days grow longer and the sun finally shows its face after what I would call a neverending winter and looking at the subtitle of the site, music mends broken hearts, my question is: What are the albums or the songs that got you through your rainy days, gave you hope, strenght for fighting and finally, when the storm was gone, made you begin your journeys with a smile on your face?

Music by this band kept me going quite a while:

When you feel bad, just admit to yourself why.

I might have a NFG avatar and post more than anyone else does in the Paramore thread.
But it's nothing compared to some of the awesome music that flows to my brain cells.

First part I agree with, punk has fuck all to do with the mohawk or any "punk" dress sense. HOWEVER: the DIY approach is pretty much the whole point of punk along with the general "fuck you" attitude. I think The Clash summed it up pretty nicely with the phrase "if you don't like it, start your own fucking band".

anyway, i dont really have a song that "gets me through the day" but when I'm really pissed off I just put on anything by Wu Tang Clan or ODB.

how about the laughers, snide commentators, random meanness just SHUT UP and answer the question or go back to drooling over whatever else you have to complain about besides people who are just trying to connect with others who love music like them.

as for the question
that's a really tough one because at any given moment it changes
it's a lot of rock and pop but I can't say it's anyone band that helps.

It's a good question though. Hope you get some better recommendations and nicer comments. Brave of you to jump in the snake pit.

lol at this BEING a punk site...

And mine is Disintegration by the Cure, gorgeous album... The first half is kinda poppy and lighter-feeling (if at all possible) and the second half has these supremely dark undertones and despair... Plus, the Cure can really pull off a six-string bass, especially on this album!

Wow, I'm sorry for the controversy caused by the first part of the introduction. Probably it was unnecessary, but THIS is what I think about this site. You could think I hate it, but that's not true. In that case, I wouldn't be here creating thread about music. However, I love this site. It has, directly or not, introduced to some amazing bands that now I listen to frequently (A Day to Remember,The Acdemy Is..., All Time Low, Anberlin, Augustana, Better Luck Next Time, Boys Like Girls, Brightwood, Cinematic Sunrise, Dangerous Summer, Explosions in the Sky, Farewell, Fightstar, The Forecast, Four Year Strong, Future of Forestry, Gaslight Anthem, Hey Monday, Jack's Mannequin, JamisonParker, Joshua Radin, Less Than Jake, Mae, Making April, Mayday Parade, Much the Same, My Favorite Highway... just to name a few) and convinced me to give other bands a second chance (Brand New, Death Cab for Cutie, New Found Glory, Say Anything...) even if results were not so successful. I love what AP.net staff is doing here. Good music, good movies and great associations like TWLOHA. Reviews are excellent. They are professional and personal at the same. This site is one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) site in the indie/emo/punk/whatever community and I'm blessed to be here.

The title of the thread comes the subtitle of the website: music mends broken hearts. When you are into a tough period, when everything goes wrong and your only runaway is music, what are the melodies that, after all, give you a smile at the end of the day and make you afford your days, so you can go on, win your fights and finally reach for the sun? THIS was my point. I thought it was legit.

FUCK ITALY
x

Sometimes I say it to myself, when I see that radios play only overplayed and overrated national artists, adored in Italy, disregarded abroad, along with annoying house/dance/trance tracks that make me want to turn the radio off. Also, I say it when my country is governed by thieves and Italians are assholes who don't see that Italy is going down like Titanic.
But, saying "Fuck Italy" maybe because you have mistaken a misleading line for an insult to the site you love, and just because you have seen that my post count isn't that high (so you thought that I'm not worth a single moment of your time), isn't fair.
So, why are you here?

how about the laughers, snide commentators, random meanness just SHUT UP and answer the question or go back to drooling over whatever else you have to complain about besides people who are just trying to connect with others who love music like them.

Here's my next joke.

So there's two guys escorted by their midget companion. They enter a bar. They get drunk. Some pretentious melon is at the counter. This kid's a fucking iconoclast. He's a think-for-yourselfer; the kind of cat you want on your corporate cabal of thinkers. This guy gets it, you know? What he gets? Who knows. But "it" is what he gets.

So this guy espouses this incredibly trite sentiment, in which he drudges up the beaten-to-death need to define what punk is (simply by stating what it isn't with great resolve), tells many longtime posters what they already know under the affected pretense that they don't know/haven't discussed it a billion times already, which is a ridiculous presumption, throws out near-meaningless adjectives like "overrated" and asks us all a question in the most nebulous fashion (so what are you actually asking us? You want us to list albums that "get us through hard times?") using horrendous analogies and metaphors ("when the storm is gone, made you begin your journeys with a smile on your face," really?).

Sorry, I set up the joke too much. Here. I'll just post it.

Oh man, let's all start throwing around definitions of Punk again, because there is only one universal conception of the genre (but not really) and aesthetic (kinda) and ideology (ish) and whatever. Let's do that.

Look at cool guy everyone. Cool guy doesn't hang around the comp. Cool guy is too cool for that shit, but not cool enough to realize ad hominem attacks are for the foolish.

You're taking this shit too personal. I attacked no one. And, by the way, I'm not better than anyone in this fucking world. I'm a guy who lives far from "cool" people, just because anytime you're talking with them, they always seem a cut above.

So, I probably was wrong when I wrote that intro and opened this thread too. If you're blaming me for this, I accept it.

Also, I didn't want to talk about "punk" or the "scene" or whatever in this thread. I think everybody has its own musical tastes, often different from mine, and I don't freak out for that. I don't want to be cool only because I listen to historical groups or genres (however I don't) or because I know what songs or artists made music history. I admire who does it. I suppose that the ones who can talk about this is who was there, who was involved in that period, in that project, in that genre, in that band. Neither I or you, who are only 3 years older than me, can really talk about PUNK. Or what that term was meant to be.

So, I'm sorry for being presumptuous or even ostentatious about punk.

But if you still think that all I write is absolute bullshit (considering that only YOU here are complaining about it) and that a shit talks better than me, with awful metaphors (I never told the world I was a poet) and no personality (or brain) and I don't even deserve to be here, asking for recommendations and convey my opinions, you can continue your argument.

Oh well, two thumbs up for using latin in a sentence
