As we laid out on the lawn to push back the coming dawn
we surveyed the heavens to build up a new life.
Clothes soaked through with dew,
and we knew no better than you
what tomorrow held up her sleeve.
Knives in a gun fight,
too little, too late to turn back... to try again.
Right on time the sun came up to blind the unprepared.
So unnerving now, we should've been more scared than we were,
but we knew, yea, we knew!
We know now, we never knew a goddamned thing about god or any damn thing...
The storms crashed through, calling out, they rattled our windows.
By day we'd survey the wreckage to dig up a smile.
Heads filled with bad ideas,
and we couldn't have known any better than you.
It could've been the night winds that fucked us up,
or maybe the sun was what is was,
but whatever... we never hung our heads in shame.
Long days. Low planes overhead screaming out for runways
on their approach never knew what would become of us,
but we knew, yea, we knew!
We know now, we never knew a goddamned thing about love or any damn thing...
It could've been the storms...
It could've been the sun...
but whatever... we never hung our heads in shame
when it came up to blind us, so unprepared,
and so unnerved now. We should've been more scared than we were.
