the baseball thread like this started good discussion, so i figured i'd start one for football.

dr z. wrote something today about hall of famers from this era. it was a pretty lame article in which he dubbed brett favre overrated.

of still active players, who do you think are without a doubt hall of famers. not counting rice and smith and stuff, just players that will be on rosters this coming season.

here's mine: brett favre, tom brady, peyton manning, marvin harrison, ladanian tomlinson, rod smith, marshall faulk, larry allan, michael strahan, junior seau, ray lewis, adam vinatieri, bill belicheck, bill parcells and bill cowher. (i know the last three are coaches, but hall of famers nonetheless.)

ronde barber, shaun alexander, tiki barber, walter jones, priest holmes, steve mcnair and richard seymour all have a good shot, but either still have something to prove or won't make the first ballot.

there's a lot of young ones that definitely may end up in there, but i'm not ready to put them down as locks yet.

i'm sure i forgot a few in every category, but for the most part i took my time and thought it out.

thoughts?

Tiki wont make it he hasn't had enough good years.

How about Curtis Fucking Martin, hes definitely a future HoFer

T.O. is a HoFer, Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez

yeah, i meant to have curtis martin. i was thinking him, must have forgot to type him up there. but i agree fully.

and that's why tiki's in the 'have more to prove' list. i didn't say he was a shoe-in.

gonzalez, yes. to, not at all. gates, he's going into his third year. i'm not gonna say he's a hall of famer.

that was one of the worst articles i've ever read. dr. z is never that bad...but that was awful.

Does anyone think Reggie Bush will be a HoFer by the end of his career?

i know. i don't read most of his shit. i'm not a big fan. but this one was by far one of his worst.

i think it's way too early to tell. he hasn't even taken a snap yet.

I'm just saying because he's getting compared to Gale Sayers in terms of ability which is pretty damn good.

bring reggie bush into it is pretty stupid. i love reggie bush and think he'll live up to expectations, but there's no use in speculating on people that haven't taken snaps. if that's the case, we should be talking about if mario williams can be like reggie white or prove worthy of being the #1 pick (which he isn't, imo).

I can't really think of any other people taht are currently playing that i think will get in.

yeah, i was hoping not to bring rookies into it. like, i even left out players who haven't been around a while that if they keep it up could make it in, like polamalu, ed reed, big ben and carson palmer. all of those guys could end up in there, but it's too damn early to tell. same with antonio gates, who came up earlier.

i don't know his numbers but he's always talked about as a top 3 TE in the league, Todd Heap. what do you think?

when healthy he is a top 3 te in the league. but he's missed some time and still is relatively young. if he's consistent for another 5-7 seasons, he may be borderline. but i don't know if he'll ever be able to prove enough to be considered a first ballot kinda guy. there's a good chance he finds his way in though.

i almost brought both of them up. i think they're both borderline now with a good chance at making it in. taylor stands a better shot because thomas' career will more than likely be remembered as being in the same era as urlacher and ray lewis, so he won't even be remembered as the best linebacker in the league during his career. that'll make it a little harder for him.

as much as the committee will hate voting for him randy moss should be a lock.

Troy Aikman...good to see him in. I was listening to Dan Patrick's show, and Michael Irvin paid him possibly the biggest compliment a person can...he said:

"Nobody on that team was initially great, we all became great, and it was under Troy's leadership. When we were 1-15...there was no greatness...but because of Troy, we were able to win those Super Bowls. It's easy to look back now and say "yeah, we were great", but the reason we were is because of Troy."

Huge compliment in my mind

And I always thought Irvin was arrogant and had a huge ego...

yeah. they've all come out and said huge things about aikman.

which is why i wanna see irvin in there so bad. smith and aikman are locks for sure, but irvin should be in there with them.

there's a strong class of first time eligibles in 07. however, even though it's a strong class, i don't know if a lot of the voters will see these people as first ballot players. so irvin and art monk may be able to sneak in next year. i hope so at least.

here's first eligibles in 07:

eric allen. i think he's a first ballot player without a doubt.

randall cunningham. same with him. voters may see differently though. he may have to wait a year or so.

leon lett. i really don't think he's a hall of famer at all. he had a great career, but he just doesn't scream hof'er to me.

ricky waters. same as lett. i don't see him deserving of even being in. let alone first ballot.

bruce matthews. first ballot without a doubt. but they rarely give offensive lineman that honor. if anybody deserves it though, it's him.

terrell davis. this one will be very interesting. i am personally on the side where i'll overlook longevity and realize that he was one of the best rb's i've ever seen play. injuries aside, he's a hof'er to me. however, due to the length of his career, i don't know if i'd put him in on the first ballot. he deserves to be in there for sure though. i think i'm in the minority to think that.

randall mcdaniel. definitely a hof'er. but again, maybe not dominant enough to be a first ballot guy.

so there's a strong chance next year that some of the players who deserve to be in there but have been left waiting will finally have their time come.
