Preacher is in fact the single greatest comic series ever. Ennis + Dillon is the gold standard combo of all time (Take that Lee + Kirby), and this is the most hilarious, touching, bizarre, badass and amazing comic of all time. I even got a bunch friends to read it, who did not read comics, and they all loved it. Even one of my friend's girlfriend. Love it, love it, love it.

Couldnt have said it better, this is exactly how I feel. It was a series I could not put down. The whole Alamo bit has to be the best thing ive read ever. Blew me away.
I notice you are a yorick (sp?) fan, I enjoy Y as well but it pales in comparison to Preacher, im sad now cause I dont know what to do now ive finished it. Everything else pales in comparison.
What do you recommend I read next?
I love Preacher.
One thing I noticed is that I have a hard time reading after the first time through, since there is such an overwhelmingly depressing feeling during the second third of the story. While I'm reading, I know what's going to happen, and I know it's going to be a shitty situation, and all that. So oftentimes I just don't want to read it.
Every once in a while I'll read the whole thing straight through (well over a few nights, before bed), and remember how powerful a story it was. But after the first time through, it really doesn't feel like casual reading.
And Dillon is one of my favorite artists. A very clean and simple style, yet nothing feels like it's missing.

This book was incredible. It's the reason I love Ennis as much as I do.

back when i was into comic books i always wanted to read this series but never got around to it. is it printed in graphic novels or would i have to get them as individual issues?

i've always said that if they wanted to make a preacher movie, that they'd be much better off doing an hbo series of it. that'd be fucking rad if that happened.
casting would have to be good though. at one point there was talk of a movie adaptation with cyclops starring as preacher. i don't want that.

I didn't really like what I had read.

Agreed. It's far too long for a movie and too obscene for another network.
Mardsen as Custer is terrible. However I read Tim Roth as a possibility for Cassidy, which I think is perfect.
add me to the list of people recommending preacher to anyone who hasn't read it. i've been collecting the trades sporadically since about 2001 (it's sorta in rotation with every other series i collect in trade-form), and i've got one left to buy/read. i friggin love this series and i almost don't want to read the last one (even though the series has been over for nearly a decade). this is one of those stories that i don't think could possibly work in any medium other than comics.

Second best comic ever. behind the watchmen of course.

Preacher > Watchmen. I love Watchmen but I'm not sure if I would even put it in my top 5. Great, great, great story, but Preacher kills it in my opinion, so do a few others...I guess it really depends on what we consider in comparison, comic series? Comic story? Not sure. No less, Watchmen is excellent but personal preference and the humor and superior main characters in Preacher definitely swing it in it's favor. Besides Rorschach, who owns face. He compares well to the big trinity of Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy.

In my opinion, Preacher is an alright read, but the second time I picked up Gone To Texas(I'll be honest, the only Preacher book I've read), I was bored. I had no desire to read any more.
Watchmen, on the other hand, I thought, "eh, it's okay" in my first reading, but the second time I read it, I thought it was even better. It gets better every time I read it, which is probably four or five, by now.
And Rorshach owns face because he's based on The Question, who, also owns face, despite not having one, ironically enough.
And no one plays psycho like The Comedian.

You can't judge from just Gone To Texas. You need to read it all. Alamo is amazing!!!
My opinion on it is that yes, Watchmen is the better written story. However, I find Preacher more entertaining, both the writing and the visuals. Preacher sits in a very happy medium between comic and book.

get your ass to a comic store, bookstore, or internet book vendor and buy it now. the debate between this and preacher is a little uneven since one is 12 issues and the other is something like 70 issues, and the subject matter in the two is absolutely nothing alike (sandman would make for a better comparison to both), but i have to say i'm in the camp that thinks watchmen is the best thing ever printed in comic form. i love me some preacher, but watchmen changed the way i looked at the medium and i still love it every bit as much nearly ten years after i first read it.

Yes sir! I definately will have to pick it up first thing on payday then. So its only twelve issues?

yes, it is one self contained story, and all the characters involved have never (and will never) appear in anything other than those 12 issues. time magazine (i think) named it one of the 100 greatest novels of this century a few months back.

You can pick it up on Amazon for $13. Throw in another TPB or a cd for free shipping and get a lot of love for under $30.

Awesome will do. Thanks mate!
I love preacher, it is one of my favorite comic series, but Watchmen is better then alot of books I have read. The story is amazing. When I first read (I was like 12) it I didnt really notice much about it besides it was violent and there were boobies, rereading it as an adult i am blown away by the awesomeness it extracts on my face.

I can see maybe losing some interest as the story / TPB's go on, but if you can't get down with Gone to Texas, something is messed up.

Sam Mendes is directing the long-shelved feature adaptation of Preacher (http://www.superherohype.com/news/topnews.php?id=7767), the comic book story of a preacher on a mission to confront God, who has abandoned his duties. Are the comic book nerds excited?

I'm almost done with the first trade, I have enjoyed it so far. I'd love see this turned into a movie/ show. Its one of the best concepts ever.

its 9 trades, which all are bigger than average. The third trade is a collection of one-shots I believe.

Well, you have to remember that Preacher is my all time favorite comic and Ennis/Dillon did every single issue. For that reason (and the fact that they ruled on the Punisher maxi series as well), they are my single favorite team ever. Dillon's art is perfect for this style of book.

What Jimmy said, but yeah, the comic book nerds are very excited. Mendes is a brilliant director and it will be really interesting to hopefully see this movie happen. However, condensing this series down to one movie will be tough, and it most certainly will lose a lot of its insanity and intensity in the translation. I mean come on, the book is about finding God and making him atone for his sins. If they do a true adaptation, this will be the single most protested movie ever.

I have to admit I am enjoying Dillon's art much more in Preacher than I was in Wolverine Origins. I want to read that Punisher story very badly, I am waiting for the Ennis Omnibus to come out. Which much like the powers hardcovers just won't stop being pushed back.
Yeah this will be protested for sure. Thats why I think it would work better as a show, less chance of people protesting or self-righteous theater owners not showing it

This is the first I've heard of it, but I've not bought a comic in quite a long time now. I love Preacher, but I have to buy it. Last time I read it I just borrowed my brother's trades. I have to say though of Garth Ennis's work I prefer Hitman.

all i've heard is that when that one dude was doing the hbo series and was working directly with ennis. i know ennis wrote a lot of stories exclusively for the show. but now that the show isn't happening the dude is urging ennis to release those stories as a series of lost preacher stories.
that's all i've heard about it. wasn't sure if ennis was actually interested in doing that or not.
