for newer peeps i'd put just blaze, heatmakerz... mid 90s beats timbaland cant be fucked with dude had so many hits.
oh and mannie fresh. tha carter 1, nuff said.
this thread will probably get about 10 replies that just say kanye west even though that dude has fallen off so bad because all his beats follow the same formula and he wont (cant?) stray from it... sped up soul, bitch singin in the background/hook, blah blah blah

RZA and Madlib for the win.
MF Doom (don't believe me? Listen to his 4 tracks on Fishscale and await his Ghostface collaboration album that he made all the beats for)
Just Blaze (even though he is responsible for Touch the Sky which is one of those songs that gives Kanye a bad rap for speeding up soul samples even though he didn't make the beat)
Kanye (not so much his new stuff, but damn some of it is rather amazing you can't deny at one point dude was running this shit nor can you deny that you won't be curious to hear Graduation when it comes out.)
J Dilla (come on kids you gotta give Dilla his respect)

i mean, when i think about it, its stupid of me NOT to list kanye, even if he has fallen off as a producer.

nah, dont go that far. that guy has talent he just chooses not to use it. he makes records that will appeal to the mainstream and that means dumbing it down so itll sell 5 million copies. but his first album... cmon. that album is great. its too bad he doesnt rap like that anymore.

Yeah I see the merit in your argument, but I can't stand him or his antics and his voice is pretty obnoxious.
Keep in mind that my favorite sort of rap aside from the Clan is all shit you probably don't like very much.

well whatever, you should be able to recognize talent, whether you like a dude or not. id also like to point out that his voice CHANGED between like the 1-2nd albums and everything after.

seriously I liked Em's first 2 albums but after that it was just not nearly as good, but he definitely has the talent to make some quality albums but like you said basically chooses not to

i mean i cant fault him for his decision... hes rich now as a result but it still sucks from the perspective of a hip hop head.

Em is doing his thing. He has stepped up his production recently, and if you focus on his beats, there are so many arrangements and melodies within them that usually go unnoticed by typical listeners. I'm a true fan so I follow his work more closely than ever. Shady/Aftermath baby!

I didn't like his beats so much on Ghostface's new album, but he did make some nuts stuff, especially the beats on Be that he made.
