it's a shame he'll never be regarded in the same league by the casual fan as rivera because of his lack of postseason appearances.

that's exactly why i feel bad. his dominance seems to be lost in the Mariano era.

there's a case to be made for hoffman > rivera if you're only regarding the reg. season numbers.
but you can't just go by only the regular season because mariano's postseason success is what makes him so great.
hoffman's so underrated, though.

i agree that hoffman is underrated.
i know you said you can't ignore the postseason stats, but i have to emphasize that. ignoring mariano's postseason numbers would be like ignoring ortiz's 9th inning stats. there will probably be people who hit more home runs than ortiz, but what's impressive is his composure under pressure, and stats "when it matters".
obviously hoffman hasn't had the number of postseason chances, but that can't be held against mariano. at the end of the day mo still has a 0.81 ERA in 111.7 postseason innings.

Hoffman has converted 89.4% of his reg. season save opportunities
Rivera has converted 88.2% of his reg. season save opportunities
Rivera has 54 less saves in 61 less opportunities.

I think one has to call Mo the better closer because of his playoff appearences. It isn't totally fair, but there is more pressure. Regardless both should be first ballot HOF'ers

Do you guys realize Trevor Hoffman has 445 saves in 13 years, and Lee Smith had 478 in 18 years? Hoffman is going to shatter his record if he pitches another 2 or 3 years.
Mariano has a shot to become the all time leader, but will the Yankees stay at the top of their division forever? Probably, but how long will Mariano pitch? He's got almost 380 saves in 11 seasons, how many more season does he have left?

Id give him another two years, we should be drafting a closer to follow him similar to what we did with Wetteland

I'd say 2 or 3 years left, he'd have to get like 40 saves in all of his last seasons to do it though.

yo you guys also forget that tony larussa only recently ruined baseball forever by fucking up how they used closers. they also had different rules for saves back in the day.
Hoffman plays on a less loaded team too....So I give him props. Still Mariano and his cut fast... almost close to unhittable.
