Isles & Glaciers – The Hearts of Lonely People EP
Release Date: March 9, 2010
Record Label: Equal Vision
Not many groups have gotten the kind of buzz and attention that Isles & Glaciers have received over the course of the past year. But then again, not many groups feature two of the best vocalists in the scene. The captain of this ship is former Chiodos vocalist Craig Owens, who enlisted the talents of Jonny Craig (Emarosa), Vic and Mike Fuentes (Pierce The Veil), Brian Southall (The Receiving End of Sirens), Nick Martin (Underminded/Cinematic Sunrise), and Matt Goddard (Chiodos). Together they make the super-scene-group, Isles & Glaciers, and after months of anticipation, they have released their debut Equal Vision EP, The Hearts of Lonely People.
Produced by Casey Bates, The Hearts of Lonely People is built around the three vocalists (Owens, Craig, and Fuentes) unique talents, thus regulating everything else to background noise. Not that this is bad thing. The vocals are incredible throughout; even the generally grating voice of Fuentes doesn’t hurt the overall sound. The combination of Owens’ tenor and the way Craig complements it results in beautiful harmonies and transitions.
The first two tracks, “Kings and Chandeliers” and “Hills Like White Elephants,” work as single piece of work. With an intro that mimes something from Danny Elfman’s playbook, the second track takes off immediately with Owens’ voice dominating the scene. Again, the vocal teamwork between Owens and Craig is an auditory treat. “Clush” is the poppiest song on the EP, but it still maintains an aggressive edge. Originally conceived as a Pierce The Veil song, it was transitioned into a track for Isles & Glaciers, so it should be no surprise that this track is heavy on the Vic.
“Empty Sighs and Wine” features great structure, as it’s flooded by Goddard’s lively bass line, Southall’s and Nick Martin’s mastery guitar riffs, and Mike Fuentes drum work, creating a vibrant rush of melody. Craig really shines here as well. In fact, this might be the strongest Craig’s voice has ever been. The somber seven-minute closer, “Cemetery Weather,” is very electronic-based and works more as a showcase of the band’s vocal talents. The two aforementioned tracks here give a glimpse of how good this project could be if the band members were able to dedicate more time to it.
The fact is Craig Owens is one of the most creative and ambitious musicians in the scene. Sure, his removal from Chiodos probably still disappoints fans, but let’s face it, that band was holding back Owens' creativity. Isles & Glaciers, along with Jonny Craig, the Fuentes brothers and crew, is the grandiose sound Owens has been striving for. The Hearts of Lonely People EP makes me wish that Owens and Craig would just drop what they are doing and create a full-time band together. Their luscious harmonies are what make this EP what it is; their voices distract you from the above average-to-average song structures and encompass your ears. The Hearts of Lonely People EP truly is one of a kind, thanks in large part to the vocals. Really, there is no other band out in the scene right now that is like Isles & Glaciers. It’s shame that this might be the only material we ever get from this group.

The new tracks disappointed me - the full ones, not the instrumentals. Those were so sick. But I still enjoy most of this record.

It was a disappointment in the sense that it was an over a year wait for two new songs. The material itself is great but.
the new tracks were a bit of a let down, but overall its a decent EP. As mentioned, song structure, and instrumentals in general, could have been better.

I've been listening to this on a loop for a week. I completely agree with this sentence, "Craig really shines here as well. In fact, this might be the strongest Craig’s voice has ever been." I thought the same thing on my first listen :) Good stuff. Great review.

If Vic didn't sing on this record, I'd be pretty okay with that. Lyrics could also be a bit less generic ("step one tell me what have I done, step two you know you better believe, step three you'll never be like me so da da da da da da doo doo", seriously?). Other than that, definitely enjoying this EP. Intro+Hills Like White Elephants are my favorite two tracks.

I think they deserve a lot of credit being that it was recorded in ten days. And no "Viola Lion"? You skipped the best track lol. Also is Jonny Craig really a baritone? I'm pretty should he's a counter-tenor or something along those lines, he does have a high voice...

Vampire Weekend, You Me At Six, The Soft Pack, The Rocket Summer, Portugal. The Man, Motion City Soundtrack, Jeff Martin & Steven Padin, I Can Make A Mess, Hot Chip, Four Year Strong, Fair, Eagle Scout, The Dilleinger Escape Plan, Butch Walker, The Bled, and The Audition ALL released music this year so far. I'd argue that 2010 has been pretty rad so far.

My thoughts exactly, almost every review I've read they have neglected to mention "Viola Lion" which I think is by far the standout track of the album. I know people are disappointed in the length and some other things but you have to keep in mind that some of these guys never worked together before and they had ten days to finish writing and then record all these songs.
Emarosa, PTV and Craig all have albums coming out this year if they don't all do a tour with I&G closing it will be a crime against humanity.

That's the only song I can tolerate. They were trying to do so much on this album and it came out a mess and really bad sounding in my opinion. This review also seemed a little biased towards Owens nut sack. "The fact is Craig Owens is one of the most creative and ambitious musicians in the scene."

I wasn't impressed by this at all. The music just didn't seem to be too interesting to me. Get rid of the Fuentes Brothers, and Craig. Nick screaming with Johnny Craig singing would be good.

03/23/10, 11:10 AM
If the guys could spend more than 12 days writing and recording a record, it would be insanely great. Basically, as I said in the review, this EP is more of an impressive display of vocals from Craig Owens and Jonny Craig. The music is decent, and there are some good structures, but it's not the focal point.
I also still don't understand the hate for Craig Owens, amazing singer.
Why the hell is Vic Fuentes singing on this album? They have Craig Owens and Jonny Craig! Two of the best vocalists of the "scene." Every time I hear his nasally vocals I literally get angry.
Other than that, it's a solid EP. I would love to get a full-length album from them (with only Owens and Craig singing).
Sure, his removal from Chiodos probably still disappoints fans, but let’s face it, that band was holding Owens back creativity Sense no makes.

i think this EP is incredible. the three voices mesh together in a way that i don't think they even knew would happen. i missed craig's voice being like this, belting stuff out with the occasional scream. his range is incredible and it's really just sad that he doesn't have chiodos to let that out anymore. hopefully he'll find a way to continue this project or find some other guys so that his voice can keep being heard. i don't think he can stay quiet for long.

i think im going to do my own review of this ep, i felt it was lacking in many departments. cemetary weather is easily the best song on here, vocally, and instrumentally. the other songs all sounded like watered-down chiodos riffs, very generic, and the production on this record was mostly suckage. casey bates is very overrated IMO.

Wait, so are you pretty into CCM then?
[EDIT] By that I mean Christian Contemporary Music.
Of course I am. I was president of my school's Newman Center in college. Spent a summer in the seminary in 2000.

Redonkiculous. That's crazy cool to know. Unfortunately, I think the only ones I really got into were Dc Talk and Audio Adrenaline when I was younger. Sometimes I wish I knew who Living Sacrifice and Project 86 were, too.

Craig totally owns the chorus in Viola Lion

Holy hell with the falsetto voices.

Jonny's is the most tolerable, then Craig.

I was actually expecting a lower score for this. The lyrics make me cringe, and it's over cumbered with voices. Honestly, I thought this was new material from The Backstreet Boys when I first gave it a listen. I'm a sucker for Vic though, so I suppose I can't do much complaining.
thanks! <3

Really wish they'd release an LP....it's definitely a guilty pleasure to listen to. I'm pretty hooked on the EP so far..

the songs really started to grow on me, ie Viola Lion and Cemetery Weather. Plus Hills was a decent song, thus 3/7 isn't bad. If it was a LP i would assume i would like two more songs. 5/12 is what i would classify a successful and good album.

Nick, fuck that person. I love the work you guys did on this record... and I'm pretty sure damn near every one else who's giving it a fair listen enjoys it as well.
More importantly, how about you guys put together a little mini-tour or do something more than a one-off show at SXSW?
What are the odds of that or maybe even more recorded songs/another EP?

for being a super band youd think the recording qaulity would be alottt better

If this were a 12 song full length, it'd easily be a contender for album of the year for me. But 7 songs, two of which are interludes? Eh. Still a great ep however.
"The fact is Craig Owens is one of the most creative and ambitious musicians in the scene."
easy on the hyperbole there fella.

This was definitely a lot better than I was expecting. I don't even understand why I thought that this wouldn't work.

I definitely enjoy this EP, but for some reason i feel like it is a guilty pleasure. Maybe its my fanboyism??

I like Vic's part the most. His voice stands out the most, and he absolutely kills it in Cemetery Weather and Viola Lion.

The metal xylophone/glockenspiel thing in Viola Lion sounds a lot like the intro to the TV show Skins.

Does anyone know where I can find official/accurate lyrics for the EP? I can tell most of them by ear, but all of the lyrics websites have different lyrics in certain parts that are most definitely wrong.

not really a fan of this EP. "Empty Sighs and Wine" and "Cemetery Weather" are the only songs i could get into. "Hills Like White Elephants" was ehh.

Would have been much better if they hadn't released 3/5 of the songs with lyrics before hand. I still love this CD, but really? I wish they would make a follow-up.

I wasn't impressed by this at all. The music just didn't seem to be too interesting to me. Get rid of the Fuentes Brothers, and Craig. Nick screaming with Johnny Craig singing would be good.
so you want DGD basically?
