Financing has been secured and it'll start shooting this July. Smith's first foray into horror, so here's to hoping it doesn't suck.

For those that don't know:
A horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America. In April 2007, Smith revealed the title of the movie to be Red State and said that it was inspired by pastor Fred Phelps, or as Smith claimed, "very much about that subject matter, that point of view and that position taken to the absolute extreme. It's certainly not Phelps himself but it's very much inspired by a Phelps (like) figure."

Being a huge Kevin Smith fan, I've been hoping for this to come to fruition for some time, just because it is so far outside of his norm. The reactions of the people who he let read the script make me think that no matter what it is going to end up being interesting.

Hey now, there's nothing wrong with Jersey Girl

TJ Wells

jersey girl sucks. AT THE SAME TIME, smith wrote it (and you can tell), and i can still get quite a bit of enjoyment out of it, raising helen style. cop out was awful, and there was NOTHING about it that made it seem like a kevin smith movie. it will likely be the only film of his i don't purchase (i own every other one of his movies atm).

And yeah, I thought Z&MMAP was fantastic and a huge step in the right direction for Smith.

I talk about lots of stuff I wanna do that either happens years later or never happens at all. Happy to report RED STATE is not the latter.
First draft was dated 9/5/07. Looks like we start shooting this July. Took nearly three years, but we're finally gonna roll on RED.

Really not into this teaser poster, though I love what it represents. The independent spirit of this film is shining through, and though I am not sure how good I feel about the final product being edited so quick (I'm sure it'll be tweaked and edited much more before release,) I do find the idea of it being edited as it was shot to be very inspiring. And the fact that this isn't a product of an Ad Agency makes it pretty cool in itself.

And you would never guess that this is a film from Kevin Smith. Kevin even said that everyone who has seen the entire thing has said the same thing to him.

I'm not going to give anything away, but it surprisingly was very unsettling despite the fact that it was such a short teaser. Looks like a 70's horror flick and in terms of atmosphere and style it reminded me of The Hills Have Eyes remake.

And for all you political trolls out there, he is not bashing republicans with this movie. He is bashing the Fred Phelps types who are extremists. No matter how you try and shake it, extremists, whether Muslim, Christian, or otherwise are bat$hit crazy a$$holes.

Kevin hasn't made all great films. That goes without saying. Every director makes bad movies once in a while. This one though, I think will make up for the strike outs he's had. Seriously. The teaser alone was heaping full of atmosphere and shots where the camera actually moves. Maybe that's because this film has been brewing in Kevin's head now for almost four years and he's had time to really nail it down visually in his head before he shot it. I don't know though.

Does this mean that it will indeed be a great flick? I don't know. To be fair it was just a teaser, but a teaser that Kevin said nailed down the tone of the entire movie. It's eerie as hell.

But anyway, just please don't bash the flick before you even see it (or a trailer) because it looks like Kevin very well may have something special on his hands here.

We had a kid who worked on the set of this film talk to my film class. He said its pretty much a straight up horror movie, with hardly any humor or jokes in it. He said there will be some shaky cam, and John Goodman is going to be awesome in it. He also mentioned that Kevin Smith is pretty much as down to earth as he's expected to be, and working on this film gave him an opening to work on Kevin Smith's next movie as well as the next Spiderman.

“Red State is done. Next step is the hockey movie, Hit Somebody (http://www.slashfilm.com/tag/hit-somebody/). Then I’m done. There’s possibly a Clerks 3. If I have something to say in my late 40s about being in my late 40s, I’ll think of [Clerks'] Dante and Randal. Shy of that, I don’t have any more movies I want to make.”

...

Here’s something that’s not so much news as my stated intentions for RED STATE: if it gets into Sundance, my plan is to pick the RED STATE distributor right there – IN THE ROOM – auction style. Might even bring up a professional auctioneer to make it fun and unintelligible. And if you’re a multi-millionaire who can’t make it to the first screening of RED STATE, fear not: maybe we’ll set up an eBay page for the post-screening bid-calling as well.

Kinda bummed. Despite the decline in quality of his flicks, it seems as if Kev's gotten back a shit ton of passion, and it's infectious. News like this is premature and an unnecessary bummer. I wish he would've let the news slip a little later, like maybe right before the release of Hit Somebody. Because, if he ends up working more, months of this kind of bummy feeling would be pointless.

I'm excited to hear about the new lead.

I have never seen a filmmaker reinvent himself the way you just have. I won’t say anything else because I don’t want to spoil anything. It’s really really exciting. If the movie ends up playing at Sundance, I might actually come up to just see the audience’s response. I can not wait ...

A horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America.

And I believe the script has been floating around out there for a while

PS, from SModcast.com

If you're a movie website or film journalist and you want to feature this poster or use it in a story, don't be a detail-thin dick. Be sure to tell people WHY the poster was released: because a bunch of generous fans pledged $1000 to The Wayne Foundation (http://viewaskew.com/thewaynefoundation/) in less than 30 minutes.
If you also include the link for the The Wayne Foundation (http://viewaskew.com/thewaynefoundation/) in your story/article, you're not only being a thorough journalist, you're also helping to crack down on scumbag kid-fuckers. http://viewaskew.com/thewaynefoundation/

Love the rat tail the kid from Hit Somebody chose, but goddamn, judging by this poster alone, it's clear that the costume designer doesn't have a firm grasp on "teen garb." Kevin Smith is so hands-off a director he barely directs, so I doubt it was his choice, but goddamn it bums me out.

Here's another new poster with Ralph Garman doing his best Jason Bateman. Thankfully, he plays silent in this, so he can't possibly be as unfunny in this as he is on Babble-On.

I mean, it's not a comedy so why would he be trying to be funny anyways

DickfaceChillah
12/18/10, 06:51 PM
I think some of the clips that have been played on Red State of the Union have clearly displayed a comedic approach to the earlier parts of the film. And I wasn't implying that he was TRYING to be, I just needed a good excuse to shit upon his face (literally) again.

Rawrr
12/18/10, 06:54 PM
Right, I was just confused because last I heard this was a straight horror film, but I don't really know I guess. Also last I heard was just the basic plot being about religion in a red state america and not the plot-point "Red State begins by following three horny high school boys who come across an online ad from an older woman looking for a gang bang. Boys being boys, they hit the road to satisfy their libidinal urges." which clearly has (some) comedic emphasis.

DickfaceChillah
12/18/10, 06:55 PM
It does. And from what I've heard on the podcast, they fall quite flat. I really HATE the dialogue I've heard so far, but I'm reserving my judgment until I hear the great Michael Parks monologue.

Did they speed up the trailer? Cause that was edited so poorly.

Anyways, this was shot on the RED ONE, right? The first time I watched, it didn't appear so. It almost appeared to be shot on lower quality digital cameras, but I watched it again and again and I came to realize I was quite wrong. I'm into the way it looks. explain to me what is so special about the red one?

DickfaceChillah

explain to me what is so special about the red one?

It's the camera that turned me around on digital cinematography. It's got such a pristine and gorgeous way of shooting things while still retaining a "cinematic" feel to the picture it takes. Shoots like 35 MM without the need to constantly load and unload film cartridges.

The resolution on these things are amazing, I think they actually have to downgrade to fit an HD resolution.

It also lends to the fact that it is much easier edited. Kevin edited the entire film as he was shooting it.

It's a really light camera, allowing a lot more handicam work, and allowing easier control to lend to better handicam shots.

Slashfilm thoughts:

David Chen – Red State is unlike anything Kevin Smith has ever done, in virtually every respect possible, and that’s what makes it the biggest surprise of the Sundance Film Festival. This film offers a non-stop barrage of violence and religious terror that will pin you to your seat. Michael Parks is a revelation (no pun intended) as the ultra-creepy religious/cult leader. But in my opinion, it’s Smith who earns the most respect from me as a result of this project. He’s taken a chance in creating something wholly different, shocking, and risky. I won’t be able to get this film out of my head for a long time to come.

Peter Sciretta – People are going to want to know how this compares to Smith’s other films. It’s so hard to compare because this is such a different movie in almost every aspect. I would say this is the best film he’s made since Chasing Amy. In this film, Smith has become something more than a comedy director — he shows real skill presenting action sequences which are both thrilling and well shot. The performances are great across the board, but particularly Michael Parks and Melissa Leo. The film is not just a horror movie but a statement (maybe too obvious at moments) about religion and government that shouldn’t be missed. That said, it isn’t without its flaws. Parks delivers a 20 or so minute sermon which should be cut down. It dragged. Also Smith inserts some comedy beats, which while funny, feel out of place in the middle of all the drama.

Germain Lussier – Yeah, that wasn’t what I expected. Red State is raw, it’s intense, it’s incredibly violent and it even has a unique voice. Kevin Smith proves that, when left to his own devices, the talent is still there. He does fall back into his old habits of letting characters talk for way too long and explain way too much all in one scene, but this really isn’t a movie that you ever expected from Smith. It’s different, flawed, but incredibly interesting and even powerful.
We’ll have much more Red State coverage in the coming hours – reviews, video blogs, reports on distribution and more. Check our Twitters (Peter (http://twitter.com/#%21/slashfilm), David (http://twitter.com/#%21/davechensky) and Germain (http://twitter.com/#%21/GermainLussier)) and keep it locked right here.

I think thats too way to much. I'd consider $30 the limit, and I think that is high.

I think his retiring from film making bullshit. He just needs to lay off the weed, and go back to making movies about Jay and Silent Bob. Make the movies people want to see. He has a fanbase because of the Viewaskewniverse, not because of Jersey Girl, Zach and Miri, and Cop Out. After an intriguing opening, Red State grinds to a screeching, 10-15 minute halt when we first meet Cooper. Smith, as well as Parks, is obviously in love with this out-there madman and they relish their moment to introduce him in his element. So he begins to preach. And preach. And preach. Parks completely transforms into Cooper during this scene, but not even the best actor alive could be that captivating for that long. Once he addresses the caged boy in the room though, the film picks up the pace extremely quickly and remains tense throughout. Smith likes to call Red State a horror film, but I’d more accurately describe it as a religious action thriller.

Kinda sounds like Kevin Smith really wanted to capture an intense sermon speech like There Will Be Blood and really missed the mark. I'm no fan of the guy, but I'm interested in seeing it. Not $60 seeing it, but maybe like matinee on Monday.

I think it's a cool idea. It might fail spectacularly. But going diy for movies is cool. Music is no longer a big spender's game. Bringing movies down a notch seems fair.

Vile extremist poetry and bloodshed make RED STATE powerful & unlike anything he's done before. Michael Parks' performance is Oscar worthy.

Kinda sounds like Kevin Smith really wanted to capture an intense sermon speech like There Will Be Blood and really missed the mark. I'm no fan of the guy, but I'm interested in seeing it. Not $60 seeing it, but maybe like matinee on Monday.
For every person that says that, there's one that says this:
Michael Parks shines as he delivers a powerful, eloquently written sermon with the most vile, misguided, extremist poetry. Parks quickly establishes Cooper as one of the most evil men living, and what's worse is that he thinks that God is behind him 100%.

It just seems like every genre movie and every Kevin Smith movie -- everyone is divided. As a fan of both him and an insane horror/thriller nut, I'm sure I'll be on the side that loves it.

Oh yea, I'm not discounting anything yet. But I just have a tough time thinking Kevin Smith can write said vile poetry without coming off as hackneyed. My problem with him has always been "every character sounds like Kevin Smith" up-his-own-ass dialogue. Stuff like that works well when subtle like "Frailty," I'll be interested to see if he can do it.

California people, you'll have a week to catch it soon (http://coopersdell.com/):

Kevin Smith and SModcast Pictures are proud to announce a one week exclusive Academy Award qualifying run of RED STATE beginning Friday, August 19th at Quentin Tarantino's legendary New Beverly Cinema. Each screening of RED STATE will be followed by a live Q&A with writer - director Kevin Smith.

Red State had its controversial and much talked about debut at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, where Smith bought the distribution rights for $20.

Smith decided to self distribute the film and immediately set up 15 special screenings throughout the U.S. as part of the "Red State U.S.A. Tour". The tour began at the historic Radio City Music Hall in New York on March 5th and finished one month later at the infamous Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.

The performances in RED STATE are extraordinary and well-worthy of Academy recognition, so in order to comply with the AMPAS rules governing Oscar qualification, SModcast Pictures is screening the film for one week in Los Angeles, starting 8/19.

When setting up this special Academy qualifying run, SModcast Pictures looked for a theater that truly represented the spirit of independent cinema and found it in the New Beverly. This choice of venue is not by chance. The New Beverly, one of the oldest revival houses in Los Angeles, has a storied past all its own. Starting as a vaudeville theater in the 1920s for acts such as Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Jackie Gleason and Phil Silvers, the New Beverly had subsequent incarnations as a nightclub, an X-Rated movie house, a live nude dance venue and finally, in the late 50s, a movie theater. Quentin Tarantino, a longtime fan of the theater who started seeing films there as a kid, took it over in the past year. Aside from the stewardship of Tarantino and programmer, Michael Torgan, the New Beverly is well known by filmgoers for it's current double feature format, which Red State will adopt for this exclusive run. Only, this double feature packages the movie and the director for two showings daily.

On September 1st, Lionsgate will debut Red State on VOD. The untraditional, direct-to-fan, touring theatrical release pioneered by SModcast Pictures during the Red State USA Tour continues this fall.
