no its the one that makes it so there must be equal men and women sports and pretty much equal funding.
and im all for you equal rights and shit...but if there is a mens sport that is VERY popular and doing well...you would think that giving them more money would be smart. but nooooo they take money away because of title 9.

That's retarded. If there was ever such a thing as Women's proffesional hockey or football, I think I would hurt somebody.

you seriously never heard of the rule?
its been in headlines for a long time. its a retarded rule. a lot of colleges have had to get rid of mens sports or add more womens sports and then from some sports that are already underfunded take away their money to put towards the other sports.
it doesnt work as it is just opposite sexism.
jmu had a decent wrestling program. in 02 they took away all the scholarships and put them towards softball.

yeah...Title 9 affects college sports...but, forming a women's college football league would probably lead to a pro one.
But, it would fail worse than the XFL.

Bingo...forcing quotas, etc doesn't seem to ever help the problem, it usually intensifies it and actually makes those usually in the majority seem like victims

i love seeing women try to hang with the men in most sports and just being served.
theres like one woman per generation who is good enough to hang with the guys in golfing and tennis.
but never in hockey...or football...or basketball.
some women in soccer can as i have seen it. but its a rarity for most sports.
ps: kara is gonna kill me.

Here's the thing though, everyone knows that men's sports for the most part are more entertaining to watch then women's, but just because of that fact doesn't mean that we as women shouldn't get the opportunity to play.
Yes women aren't as good as athletes as men, but does this mean that we shouldn't get the opportunity to play? No. We should get the opportunity regardless. If it weren't for it school's would put all their money towards men's sports because they are more entertaining and they bring in more money, but how is that fair to the women who really want to play the sport? It's not at all.

true. but that still doesnt mean that there has to be equal number of men and women sports. that is ludicrous.
i would concede the money aspect on some levels but i still dont believe that getting rid of some sports just because they are mens so there is room for womens is fair.

Except...it's not like the opportunities to play wouldn't exist, just the scholarship money wouldn't.
A school offering women's soccer as a varsity sport would still happen, just, most likely it wouldn't have as many scholarships in it

I actually agree with you on this. college's get money from football and men's basketball, primarily. So they're making plenty of money and like a previous example of a team dropping men's wrestling for softball isn't that big of a deal. It's dropping one sport not making money for the college for another sport that won't make money for the college.

No, I don't believe that's fair either, but how else are you going to make sure there are a fair amount of women's sports? I don't think it's fair to take away a men's team just to compensate for a women's team and that's just because I believe that everyone should be allowed the opportunity to play the sport they love, but there's really now other way to do it I guess, I don't know.
I just think the whole money aspect is stupid and that everyone, men or women, should have the right or chance to play.

i think colleges should go about it by merit.
make it like a points system. the teams with the highest grades...best record...booster club money...etc
then they should give out money that way. granted maybe a little more for sports that are the most popular but i think a points system would work better than te way now. this would mean that if you are getting screwed it is because you yourself suck and have no one else to blame.

That is a crock of shit. If that were the case then I would've gotten jack shit for money for soccer because women's soccer is never that popular of a sport especially for a school that's women's soccer team has always been on sort of a rollercoaster of seasons.
That is an absolutely ridiculous and retarded way to think about things. There are amazing athletes out there who deserve college money that play for teams that no one gives two shits about.

So why shouldn't women be allowed to have scholarships?
That's not actually what I'm saying...they should...but, why shouldn't the school, whose money is being taken, have the discretion of where it goes.
Title IX specifically states
No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance
Isn't forcing a quota (in this case 50/50) as a result.... discrimination on the basis of sex?
Schools make money from sports...they want to place money back into those programs that make them more money, thus in turn putting scholarships, etc. If a school doesn't make money from a women's sport, why would they want to continually support it. Men's sports are dropped all the time for the same reason. Title IX, in my eyes works counter intuitive to it's own wording
For example...colleges are there to provide guidance for career choices. There are significantly more opportunites for males in professional sports...and it's not a sexism thing, it's a "men's sports draw the masses" thing...so, shouldn't a college in turn reflect that. Why should they be required to provide more opportunites than are realistic for a section of their student population

I don't believe college sports should be out there for the sole purpose of making money and maybe I'm naive when it comes to that fact, but that's just what I believe.
I don't know, this conversation is just pissing me off and I can't even think.
Let me tell you from my own personal perspective I guess. I've played soccer since I was 5 years old and after graduating from HS I wanted to continue playing in college because of my intense passion for the sport. I sent off stuff to numerous different colleges and then it finally came down to Indiana Tech, where I went. I feel so fortunate that someone allowed me the opportunity to play the sport I love and basically paid me to do so. If someone would've cut my scholarship money just because not many people came to our games I think that would be bullshit.
I don't know, unless you've played a sport in college I feel as though it's really difficult for any of you to actually relate.

i wanted to fence in college. i wanted to go to penn state so i could fence on their team since they are in the top 10 in the country. i talked to the coach and he said he would try to pull some strings but only has limited funds for the team. he ended up telling me he would not be able to get me any type of scholarship and i was shit out of luck. granted i didnt get in because of a fuck up by my guidance counselor...but i got screwed because one of psu's top sports had no funds whatsoever.

The only thing a women could professionally play with a man is golf and maybe volleyball. There is already a thread about this. Women's soccer is the Euquialent of JV high school boy's soccer. Men's tennis is a lot faster than women's.
As for Title 9, it isn't fair, but it wasn't meant to be so damaging. Some women's sports that have been created (better funded) are way more popular than the male sports that they take money from. I symphasize with those who love their sport and have seen their scholorships be cut, but atleast there is now a better opportunity for female atheletes to become college athletes.
I think it should be cut back to like 60/40 or something, but then it will look like mena nd women aren't treated equally.

On an ideal level...I agree with you wholly. On a realistic level, it just will never be that way...and the policy that is created is not helping, it's hurting.
I wish college sports weren't based on the money they draw in...because my frisbee team would probably get a ton more money from our school if it were based on talent, or skill...but, it's very much not.
What Title IX, as I see it does, is not hurt major schools and force them to be equal, it actually hurts smaller schools who don't have the money to create scholarships from nowhere, and so instead of providing the sports that are best suited to their student body, they create an 0-32 softball team that nobody cares about or wants to play for, because they needed that 8th female sport. Forget that Lacrosse team that was perenially top 3 in their conference (I speak of this from example becuase my friends who went to West Chester in PA basically had this happen to them)
For example, a major school will just creat a bullshit team that they don't care about who coaches or who plays for...just so they can throw more money at another program. Sure, it's an "opportunity" I guess...but, it's not really right.
Ideally, this law wouldn't exist...it wouldn't have to, the opportunities would be present already. But, the way the law is enacted is very much flawed in my mind.

It's not that bad honestly. I might be even making my way back there soon. I mean, it's the second biggest city in Indiana and there isn't tons to do there. As far as going to shows go I had to travel at least 2 hours to get anywhere. There are a shit ton of restaurants. But as far as things to do goes, there isn't much, or at least that's how it seemed. yeah. my dad was born and raised in Fort Wayne and my mom is from Kalamazoo so they flipped a coin before they got married and we ended up living in Kalamazoo, well portage because Kalamazoo has shitty schools and is the thuggy part of town and portage is the uppity, yuppy type part of town with better schools.
