View Full Version : Knowing the Set List

pretty simple question...
if you're planning on attending a show do you like to know the setlist BEFORE hand so maybe it'll sway you to not to in the end and/or to be prepared in what sort of set they're planning on playing
or
do you like the surprise, and hopefully they play a majority of the songs you enjoy

It pretty much doesn't affect me at all.
bwinfield819

depends on the show
I would want to have a general idea of what songs they will be playing so I can learn the lyrics for those and sing along. But otherwise, it shouldn't affect my decision whether to attend the show or not.
On a completely different note, I hope to get a band's setlist one of these days

Ya, I usually like to see it to make sure I know the lyrics (especially if there's a song from one of their first albums that I am not familiar with). I got my first set list last week (polar bear club)!

Good job on getting the setlist. By the way, does your username have something to do with the enzyme used in the glycolysis cycle? It's probably not but being the nerdy person that I am that was the first thing that pop into my mind when I see your username. Lol

There's nothing like hearing the intro to your favorite song by your favorite band live, when you've been secretly asking the gods to play it at the end of every other song.

i think i like looking at it because if i notice...for instance....for a band like AFI, if I happen to notice that they're not playing ANY of their old stuff and NONE of their more "hard" stuff then maybe I should stay away from the show rather than pay and be dissapointed.

Depends on the show. If it's a band I just like, I'll look at the set list to ensure I have a good time. If it's a band I love, I won't so the whole night is a surprise.
For instance, I'm seeing Motion City Soundtrack on the 7th of April, and they're one of my favorite bands. I want absolutely NO knowledge of the setlist beforehand. On the other hand, I'm seeing A Day To Remember, August Burns Red and Silverstein on the 19th. I like them a lot, but quite frankly it wouldn't kill to know the set list.

I don't care about the exact order of the songs, but depending on the band, I like knowing which songs are going to be played. There's some bands that I don't enjoy certain albums by, so if 90% of their set is from those albums, I'd most likely not waste my money by going.

I want it to be a surprise. I think that's what makes a concert energetic and spontaneous. What's the point on going to a concert if you're not surprised? You might as well just stick with listening to their CDs.

could you elaborate on this ridonkulous statement
Old songs are just that, old and done. Their time has come and gone. Why make new songs if they aren't going to bother to play them? For me, old songs tend to be zone out moments a lot of the time.

God, I can't wait! This will be my 5th time seeing them, and my 1st time seeing them headline. Twice for Warped (06 and 08, I wanna say), once opening for Weezer, I count that little online concert they did a while back as half and the in-store acoustic show earlier this year as half.

You're probably the first and only person I've heard of that dislikes anything from a band's past, no matter the quality. It just doesn't make sense.

I don't "dislike" it, I'm just done with it for the most part. I had those songs when they came out generally. I enjoyed them then. What I listened to years ago is not what I want to listen to now. It's like asking if you listen to oldies, of which I don't.

So at a Taking Back Sunday concert, you'd yell, "Play 'Sink Into Me!'" Yeah, I'm content with my previous quote.

Fourth time here, second seeing them headline. They really do such a great job of integrating stuff from all four of their albums into their set, which is just awesome. They're easily my favorite band, it's gonna be a killer show! I saw them do an in-store at Best Buy over my Christmas break, and I got pictures and stuff signed by all the guys. It was awesome.

When I saw Taking Back Sunday last summer, they played about five songs off of each record, which was decent. Though I would have preferred them to play through all of New Again as I found the songs they did play from that most exciting, with the exception of the older "Miami."
And I don't yell out song titles at shows. That's uncalled for unless asked for by the band.

That's stupid. Some bands. for example Mayday Parade, have great older material. While the new material is a steaming pile of shit. I'd much rather them play some old great songs then new mediocre terrible songs

For me, old and new does not denote quality. If I like a band, I like all the work that encapsulates that band. The older stuff is no less or more than the newer. Our individual connections to it may be. But for me, I've pretty much moved on from the older in most cases, and have no interest in hearing it again.

I find that completely stupid. What if your favorite song is an older song? Why wouldn't you want to hear your favorite song? What if bands only have two records? Or a new full length and one EP? You only want the current stuff on the new full length? That's absurd

Two examples recently that I found wonderful. Hawthorne Heights did not play "Ohio is for Lovers" and Alesana played their whole record straight through and then three old songs.
A popular song does not your band make. And bands should play all or as close to all of a new or current record as possible. I go to a show to see where a band is now, not where they were in the past years. They have grown up and so have I.

That's so idiotic I can't even wrap my head around it. You're issue is that you're 30 and going to see bands like Alesana. Bands should mix up the old and new. The day All Time Low stop playing Coffee Shop Soundtrack and The Maine stop playing The Way We Talk is the day I stop seeing them

We have different heads. I would like All Time Low to stop playing "Jasey Rae" and the like. I want to see all of Nothing Personal and all their other new songs like "Toxic Valentine," "Poison" and "Painting Flowers." And as much as I like the Maine I totally don't want to see anything from the first two ep's. I would very much like bands, if they have the time, to just play through their newest record and newest material.

Yes yes yes yes.

Same. It's awful. Like, when I was going to see Fall Out Boy for the first time on BND2, I swore I would not look at the setlist. But as soon as it was posted I ran to my friend's house and she looked at it and I looked. I couldn't help it.

:-| No, no thank you at all.
I like to look at set lists just to get me pumped and ready for the show itself. Once I get to the show and watch and enjoy it, I'm not going to think about what they did or didn't play, if they switched up the order, or anything like that. I'm just going to be elated that I was there and got to experience it. That's just how I am, though.

you just contrdicted yourself. if you like all the work a band does, then wouldnt you like the old stuff? it sounds like you dont want to like it becasue its not new, hip, the thing to like. that would explain why your 30 and listening to the maine, alesana, and before their eyes.

if i know the band a lot, it's fun to not know the set list. but if it's just like an opener that i'm kind of into but not too much, i want to know the setlist so i know what songs to know the words to, that way during their set i'm not just sitting there awkwardly.

I just get bored of all the old stuff. I still like it, but I liked it and wanted to hear it when those records or songs came out. I don't want to really hear them years removed. Of course, there are a few exceptions, but in general. I'm constantly onto new albums. A cd has to be really good and really connect with me if I'm listening to it a year or two later, not to mention months. My ears always crave new excitement, not the old steady.
An example I was thinking of today. Story of the Year. I would want to hear The Constant. But I'm betting they would play "Until the Day I Die" which would make me cringe and just turn off to the set for that song. It would kill the energy for me, even though I liked that song and that record in 2003 or so.
I like what I like. "Hip" would be all this indie nonsense that's permeated this site. I had my indie phase. Didn't mean anything to me. That's why I left it long behind.

They played a lot of The Weak's End and The Question stuff and nothing from I'm Only A Man that I remember. Bored me right out, even though I like those records. But I enjoyed them when they came out. I moved on as the years passed as they moved on with new records.
