I really dig the Goldbaby refills. I use the tape 808 and Tape 909 all the time. They have a new bass refill The SH101 maybe that I may download. His sounds are really phat and some of the best samples imop.

I've always wanted Reason and to Rewire it into Cubase, but it's so much money.

Yeah, Rewire is pretty sweet. I wire it into PT and that works pretty well. You should check out Propellerhead's new program Record. It combines audio with MIDI to make it an all-in-one deal. It's pretty legit.

I use Reason. The I Am Thor patch, although not useful, is pretty entertaining. IAMTHORIAMTHORIAMTHORIAMTHORIAMTHOR IAMTHOR

I used redrum awhile back but I ended up switching to Ultrabeat in Logic Studio because I find it to have to have better sound and to be easier to program. Just preference though.

I really wish I had Logic Studio, but I don't have that either. Shitty.

Do you guys have any good tutorials online that you'd recommend?

This site has some good links, but some useless ones too.
Does anyone recommend and (free?) ambient sounding refills? I've been trying to write stuff similar to The Postal Service recently.

I just recorded my own samples in EXS24 and do some layers, that way I can get far superior dynamic control and velocity than in ultrabeat. Though the built in effects on there are pretty nice.

Hmm I'm gonna have to look into this. Thanks.

I tend to record my beats in the sequencer by playing them on a midi controller instead of creating patterns, then copying the patterns in the sequencer. The NNXT sampler is also pretty dope for drum use. You can load any samples from one into the other. A cool thing to do also is to layer up drum samples, then export them as a single wav, then reload that wav file back in as a single sample. Good way to thicken up your sounds.

if you're pretty fresh, I'd check out http://www.boyinaband.com he's got a number of good tutorials and samples for you to use while you build a track from scratch.

If you are just using the standard samples that come with Reason, using Scream 4 and reverb is essential to get them to sound decent in my book.

in addition to phattening with scream, i like to use about 11 - 14 ms of delay, it's just enough to thicken the sound without having any audible perception of delay.
btw: Rebirth is now available as an app for the iPhone, woot woot

I've been Beta testing Reason 5 and Record 1.5 for a couple weeks now. Absolutely love it. Kong is a beast of a drum designer. I've never heard such phat drum sounds come out of Reason without importing an external sample. I don't even want to produce with Reason 4 anymore...

Are any of you ever able to get any actual GREAT synthbass sounds out of Reason? I've used it to demo every record I've ever made, and I'm not an expert or anything, but I've never been able to get the fat, lush, driving synthbass sounds I want. Sometimes I think I'm close and then I hear an Ocelot or MSTRKRFT song and I wonder why I even bother.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

You can get phat bass synth...i'm fan of layering. thor is cool because you can have 3 osc in one instance of thor. Combinators are where it's at. Think of bass in three parts: mid bass, sub bass and high end. Create your multiple sections, then compress together. EQ and filtering is also improtant as far as getting the freqs you want to cut through.

I usually try layering sounds, but I still fall short of where I want to be (like I said, I'm no expert). Do you have any specific patches you like to use for synth bass?
Thanks!

I don't use the factory sound bank that often. I like to create my own synths, i also have alot of refills that i've purchased. I do like the LA riot bass patch for sub bass. Alot of the patches are pretty easy to tweak. Have you checked out THIS (http://www.propellerheads.se/substance/patch-charts/) it's a page that the props post fav patches from popular artists that use reason. Also...you said you dug MSTRKRFT? What's fun to do is sample bits from people's tracks and use them in redrum or load into a sampler. You can sample that kick drum from B.O.U.N.C.E. by MSTRKRFT perfectly on the intro. If you can catch a clip where an instument is solod in a track, samlpe that shiz, it's already professionally mastered so you know it's gonna sound good.

Anybody check out Reason 5 or Record 1.5 updates yet? I have both updates and am very pleased. Workflow is way improved with the new blocks feature and Kong is a serious drum designer. Dr. Rex is now Dr. Octo Rex and live sampling is introduced as well as Neptune a pitch correction and voice synth device and handfull of other useful features.

Kong looks amazing. I beta tested the original Record software. The SSL emulation on the mixer is unreal. If it had some kind of VST/AU plugin support I would buy it. Sadly that will never happen...I'll have to stick with logic.

you can always rewire R+R into logic
ludvista29

That I know, but I dont enjoy doing that. Its tolerable to rewire in Ableton, but logic just sucks to rewire reason into it.
