I've still never seen this movie. Is it bad like The Room where you still want to watch it, or just so bad that you don't even want to attempt sitting through it?

But when a movie is so universally criticized, called the worst movie of the decade, how can someone not have the urge to at least see what all the fuss is about

Its not bad like the Room, this has some pretty famous people in it, but just fails big time.
Barry Pepper
John Travolta
Forrest Whitaker
The tone of the movie, more than anything else, is what really sucks about this movie. Like that article says, the aliens are in KISS boots with Bob Marley wigs!
Besides, this was written by the same dude that did Plan 9 From Outer Space, which is considered one of the worst sci-fi movies of all time. And, these movies come from the idiot who created Scientology, so of course everything he does is horrible.

It was really, really, really bad. I'd say give it a watch if you have absolutely nothing else to do. If only to see a movie completely go down in flames.

I don't think it's hilarious-bad like The Room. Just terrible-bad.

Oh, there is a scene that implies John Travolta is going to get head by some alien chick with a huge forehead, she kneels in front of him and stick out her tongue, which is like 12" long haha.

heres the quote from that scene, give you an example of the dialogue. Imagine Travolta speaking with some weird, almost british accent.
Travolta - Terl
Whitaker - Ker
Pepper - Johnny Goodboy
Terl (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/): Ker, I'd like you to meet Chirk.
[Ker grunts appreciatively]
(http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/)Terl (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/): She's, um... she's, um...
(http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/)Chirk (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000593/): His soon-to-be newly acquired secretary.
(http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/)Terl (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/): Yes.
(http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/)Ker (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0001845/): [eagerly] Really?
(http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/)Terl (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/): [quietly, to Ker] She's stupid enough not to be a menace, good-looking enough to be decorative; she gets drunk with economical speed...
(http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/)Terl (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/): [normal voice] - and has other advantages.
[Chirk extends her very long tongue]
(http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/)Ker (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0001845/): Ooh. I can see that. (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/)
Terl (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/): Attention. This is Terl, your chief of security. Exterminate all man-animals at will, and happy hunting! (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/)
Terl (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/): While you were still learning how to spell your name, I was being trained to conquer galaxies! (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0000237/)
Jonnie Goodboy Tyler (http://www.absolutepunk.net/name/nm0001608/): Has anyone seen one? A monster? A demon? A BEAST? YAH!

I dont know, is it?! I know for a fact that one of Barry Pepper's friends in the movie tries to escape off a helicopter that lands, while Travolta isnt looking. He runs and i think either Travolta activates the radius trigger, or simply presses a button and the dude's head blows up.
I saw this movies in theaters :-d , I didnt walk out of it, though. The only movie i've done that to was Judge Dredd.

This. I usually enjoy terrible movies (Breathing Fire, anyone?) but I barely got through half an hour of Battlefield Earth.

That's sadly also in swordfish! Travolta takes people hostage and puts these collars on them where they can't leave a certain radius or else they'll blow up. True story!
In response to your other comment, I'm going to get a lot of crap for this, but the only movie I ever walked out of was crouching tiger hidden dragon
