The above link is a debate between two opposing sides regarding video game violence. Although this should be in the official thread, I believe that the subject matter is too deep to be relegated to that thread and there can be a lot of discussion.
Your thoughts?

"As an 18 year old who ahs spent his entire life playing video games, I grew up in a large community - about 3000+ students at my highschool. I know hundreds of gamers around the country, and I all I have to say about videogames and violence is this - the only times I have seen students act out in a violent way due to a video game is when they are getting harrassed or beaten up because they play video games.
Saying that someone TRAINED to kill someone with a gun playing Doom is asinine. "
^ agree with that guys comment.
some people are just a little too paranoid

Haha I saw that already. My question is, is it really worth $1000 to be known as the N64 kid for the rest of your life?
Anyways, this kid is laughing his way to the bank.
Real question, who's seriously stupid enough to buy this? Friggin moron.

well...as far as being known as the "N64 kid", I don't think its that bad. You were like 5-7. Thats the same as shrugging off what a drunk friend says. Sure, they will get a lot of shit for it, but even they will have fun with it. Being excited as a little kid isn't a big deal.
But being excited when being a big kid, and paying 1K for an out of date system just because some kid went crazy over it, that deserves lots of shit that can't be shrugged off...like, ever.

The reason video game violence is so appealing is because it is absolute escapism.
I mean, in GTA, I will shoot women in the face, fuck a prostitute, kill her, steal her money and then take out fleets of police with a rocket launcher. In reality, I am just about the least violent, stressed or angry person in the world.
The reason people are attracted to those games is because it is so different from what you are like or what you would ever do in real life. You assume the role of a character.
The video game violence debate is like saying that any actor who plays a bad guy in a film/play/tv is an asshole in real life

I really don't know.
I think most of the time it is looked at in black and white terms like on one side OMG THOSE COLUMBINE KIDS PLAYED DOOM IT MADE THEM INTO KILLERSSSS and on the other OMG I'VE PLAYED GTA MY WHOLE LIFE AND I'M NOT A KILLER?!!!!
It's probably a lot more complex than this and depends on the individual personalities involved. Of course *most* people won't be affected but we aren't worried about most people, we are worried about the people on the edge, and who knows what sets them off? I'm going to go with a very generic "I think it probably can negatively affect some people and will probably not negatively affect others." In general most kids can get away with playing violent games, but I think if I had a kid who sat around pulling the wings off flies all day I would probably only let him play colorful Nintendo games.
Often it does make me wonder though, why do "normal" people love acting out violence? I consider myself a non-violent person, I've only been in one real fight in my entire life, and I rarely play violent video games but there is still a surge of satisfaction when you snipe a villagers head clean off in Resident Evil 4. Some claim that all of us have violent urges built into us (from wayyyy back in the days when everyone had to fight to survive) and this is why normal people go off to war and end up doing things to other human beings they would never have thought possible... like the only thing holding us all back from being violent is society and its rules and once those rules are gone chaos prevails. Sadly I think that is probably true to some extent.
Ah well, yet another question society will struggle to answer and never admit that we might just never find an answer. I guarantee tens of thousands of years from now officials will still be sitting around trying to figure out what makes some people crack...

If there is or isn't enough violence in video games, THAT'S FOR THE FUCKING PARENTS TO DECIDE.
Sorry, I work in retail, and it's not up to me, or any game publisher(RockStar et. al.) to decide what anyone plays. It's up to the person buying the game. And if the person buying a game isn't old enough to buy it, it's up to the parents to look at the ESRB rating, and figure out if that's a game they want their child to be playing. Ugh.
