View Full Version : Significant and/or Controversial Music Art?

I have to either write a paper or do a presentation on something for my Art History class (on anything art-related), and I'm thinking about looking into album artwork. (Yeah, I'm being one of "those people," the ones that create threads related to a project for class expecting everyone to help them out. I don't necessarily need your assistance, but I think impute from others can only help, and I also think this is a valid thread topic, regardless of motivation.)

So, what I'm wondering is, what are some significant album designs? These can be historically significant, highly controversial at the time, innovative for an album design, or just really iconic. Also, this can apply to LP, EP, or single artwork. If you have any poster or clothing designs worth talking about, I'd be interested in that as well. (Isn't out-of-print merch collecting pretty big in punk and metal communities? That could be a neat side topic to touch on.)

Marilyn Manson's "Mechanical Animals" was a very controversial cover. It didn't help that it was blown up and plastered in Times Square, either.

Controversial, Scorpion's Virgin Killer (don't google it or your name will be on a government list) and Blind Faith's self-titled were both really controversial.

for controversial, any art from Cannibal Corpse & The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers

for ironic, Lynyrd Skynyrd - Street Survivors (original art)

Slayer's God Hates Us All original cover was too controversial, so they had to choose an alternate.

Controversial at the time:

Apparently, toilets were considered indecent in the '60s.

Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins by John and Yoko would be a good one to use.
