So, I'm finally discovering the music from before my time. I'm looking for the big time records I should check out. Such as TAYF, Futures, Stay What You Are, Forget What You Know, etc. Any other bands with great records from that time period would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for that.
For the first...fourteen or so years of my life I only knew the radio singles. From there, I went through the powerpop/crunkcore stage, which I finally got out of, and moving onto real pop-punk and post hardcore. So I'm still kinda clueless about some of the big records of the past other than the ones I hear about on here all the time.

I just downloaded SoCo tonight. I was blown away from the first listen.
Houston Calls I've actually had for a few weeks. I love it. One of those albums which all the songs I can just listen to.
The Movielife...eh. I had a bad experience with Vinnie. He was at Manatour on his acoustic set and he was just atrocious. Of course, I had no clue who he was then and I didn't know what I was expecting, but he just seemed drunk the whole time and his voice doesn't flow over to acoustic well. At least not that night.

I never got into anything post-Movielife, so I can't speak for his solo work/IATA stuff. Actually, that EP is pretty much the extent of what I like by them. 40 Hour Train was alright, but I just loved that EP. Have you tried The Early November?

The Room's Too Cold is probably the best "starter" album. But, if you like that, check out the For All Of This EP before The Mother, The Mechanic, and the Path, only because FAOT is more like TRTC. The Mother, The Mechanic, and the Path is one of my favorite albums along with TRTC, but it's double (essentially triple) disc can be a bit overwhelming to a new fan, only because it doesn't really leave anywhere to start. But, it's still a fantastic album, my 2nd favorite by TEN, behind TRTC.

It's an excellent "cohesive" album, the type you listen to from front to back, but not much on it would really "draw in" new TEN fans, that's why I say to check out the previous works. But, once (and if) you become a TEN fan, you'll instantly click with TM, TM, TP. Couple single worthy songs (The Money In His Hand, Decoration, Hair, etc.) but the album as a whole is so much stronger when played front to back.

My problem is my teenage attention span combined with just the way my brain works. It's extremely difficult for me to process the lyrics and the music at the same time. And even when doing that, processing the music is much easier. So albums that don't stand out immediately are difficult for me to love. It's something I'm working on.

Haha I still struggle with that from time to time. Music always sticks out to me before the lyrics, but getting into artists like Tom Waits are helping me to appreciate lyrics before music.

I treat it as a double disc, though. That's why I said in my post double disc (essentially triple), because the third disc, to me, isn't part of the "album," as much as it is a "feature to the album." It's nice to listen through once, but take that away, and the double disc is a great album.

Well, they had an EP and a self release before LTTW, but I'd take LTTW over North, but by the smallest of smidgets, haha. I think it's only because LTTW is what got me into the band to start, so it's got sentimental value over North. But you can't go wrong with either.

Haha yeah man for sure. Some bands were a little before my time, I mean, 2002 2003 DTR, I was 12 and 13, just getting into music. But, I never liked "mainstream music" other than The Offspring, Oasis, Weezer, etc. I grew up on bands like that, but thankfully my sister is 3 years older than me, and exposed me to DTR bands, Brand New, Relient K, etc. all at a young age of 12 and 13. I didn't fully understand the greatness back then, haha, but listening/enjoying was good enough for me. The appreciation kicked in when I was around 15. So, the scene was awesome for my early years of high school, and 7th and 8th grade. I remember wearing Rx Bandits shirts to school on "dress down days" and everyone asking what it meant, haha.

I'm sure Ace would want to smack me if he heard me say that, since The Path was his "little baby," so to speak. But, to me, it was just something you listen to once, appreciate, and never go back to. The music said much more than The Path.

I'm envious. All my friends were into nu-metal, so I got to enjoy almost none of this music when it came out (except Coheed, they were my secret). Haha i'm just thankful I had a sister to "show me the ropes," because all of my friends liked rap at that time, haha. Then once I got into high school, I made some new friends with similar tastes. But I miss the days of really anticipating "all" of my favorite bands releasing music. I don't know, it just seemed like I enjoyed every band that was out back then. Can't say the same now, haha.
Side note, Coheed was and is still awesome. Good secret, haha.

There was just less available music then. It's a law of averages. With more bands, there will be more stuff you say "eh" to.
And their first two albums are desert-island discs. They dragged me kicking, screaming and against my will into what I then dismissed as "scene" music. Though now, putting Coheed there makes me laugh. Also, Coheed's last record (No World for Tomorrow, not YotBR) is, by far, the most heartbroken I have ever been by an album.

I haven't heard their last record, but I loved In Keeping Secrets and the one with the IV on it.

Man, I love Fenix TX. To me, their debut is pretty much the definition of good pop punk
