View Full Version : Other Places To Promote Your Music
I am Mick

As members of small, unsigned, independent bands, we all could probably agree that the biggest challenge in reaching our goals is simply just being heard. With Myspace dead and filled with only bands and companies trying to promote themselves, it's safe to say that's hardly an effective form of picking up new fans. I decided to create this thread for musicians to come together and share useful places on the web that any band should consider being part of, ultimatlely just trying to get our music out there.
[I think it goes without saying that your band should be on myspace (actually probably not), purevolume, twitter, and facebook.]
BANDCAMP
http://www.bandcamp.com
WHY: This is by far the easiest way to distribute your bands music through free downloads, pay what you want downloads and set price digital downloads. You reserve the rights to your music, the album artwork remains attached and you can even embed your lyrics (so users with iPhones and iPod Touches' can scroll the lyrics as they listen to your music.) You can check real time stats of all the downloads your band recieves, and I wouldn't be suprised if this site grows into something incredible.
REVERBNATION
http://www.reverbnation.com
WHY: Honestly, ReverbNation does so much, I couldn't even begin to explain it. Here's a snippet from the website.
We provide innovative marketing solutions that musicians need to compete, cooperate, and differentiate in an increasingly noisy online environment. Unlike typical "closed" communities, artists use ReverbNation as their home base for approaching marketing and promotion across the Internet as a whole — be it via social networks, blogs, or the artist's homepage. Tools like TunePaks, FanReach, and Widgets give the artist the power to spread their music and information virtually anywhere. Real-time stats then provide a 360-degree view of how the music is spreading, who is listening, and which fans are actually passing it on to their friends and posting it on their pages. For more information on what ReverbNation can do for artists, click here (http://www.reverbnation.com/main/overview_artist).
ABSOLUTEPUNK'S FREE MUSIC FRIDAY
WHY: Linda does an awesome job putting out a collection of free music from a plethora of great, signed and unsigned artists. My band noticed a huge boost of our plays and downloads on the Friday it was posted. If you have music you're giving away, definitely submit it here:
Please send any new submissions to reviews@absolutepunk.net with "Free Music Friday" in the subject line.
Submissions should include your band's name, title of submission (and whether it is a full length, EP or single song), myspace or website link, and similar bands for the "recommended if you like" section. Please upload it to a downloading website such as mediafire or megaupload and send that link.
LEGAL FREE MUSIC.TUMBLR.COM
http://legalfreemusic.tumblr.com/
WHY: If you're giving away your bands full-length, EP or just a single song, this is an amazing blog to submit it to. My band recieved almost 100 downloads of our EP in the first two days after submitting it to the blog. Submission is easy and the blog runners (googirl8907 (http://absolutepunk.net/member.php?u=96983) and Wait_For_It (http://absolutepunk.net/member.php?u=453772)) post material regurlarly.
AMIE STREET
http://amiestreet.com/
WHY:
On Amie Street, the community determines the price of music. Every song starts cheap (or even free!) and increases in price up to 98 cents as more and more people purchase it.
This ensures that you get music at a sensible price. If you find cheap songs or albums, that means they're new to the site and/or undiscovered; conversely, when you pay top price for an album, you know that a lot of people think it's really good.
NOISE TRADE
http://www.noisetrade.com
WHY: Artists sign up, then upload their music to create their custom NoiseTrade widget. They can then embed their widget anywhere they're visible online. Fans who see their widget can sample the music and download it for free, tell friends via Facebook, Twitter, or email and even tip the artist. When they're done, fans can even grab the widget and automatically add it to their own website, blog, or favorite social networking site.
LALA
http://www.lala.com
WHY: Let's listeners play your music from any computer through their browser.
GIMME SOUND
You upload your music for free download, but you still get paid depending on ad revenue and how many downloads you receive.
http://www.gimmesound.com/
LIVE UNSIGNED
http://www.liveunsigned.com (http://www.liveunsigned.com/) now has a 'featured show' facility, where for a very modest fee (£2) you can get your band's show at the top of the listings.
Now feel free to add onto this :)
PLEASE DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE AND JUST PROMOTE YOUR BAND HERE.
CromRockRadio
04/20/10, 03:55 PM
I run a online radio show that plays punk, ska, Oi!, hardcore, and psychobilly
if you have a band that plays that kinda stuff send me a couple of tunes and I'd love to throw em into rotation.
www.live365.com/cromrockradio (http://www.live365.com/cromrockradio)
or you can bug me at
www.myspace.com/yesiambetterthanyou (http://www.myspace.com/yesiambetterthanyou)
everysong played can be clicked and purchased on itunes or amazon.com
I'll also mention you on the myspace page for other folks to see
and add your music to upcoming podcasts.

So my buddy Josh just told me about this movie production company that makes independent films and they're looking for unsigned bands and musicians to put on their movie soundtracks. Their website is www.imadeamovie.com (http://www.imadeamovie.com) and apparently you just join the community and upload your music to the Soundtrack Music Submissions group and if the Studio Director likes your music, it'll be featured on the soundtrack for one of the movies that they're producing. It's not without pay either. I guess you get co-publishing rights along with publicity for your music. It seems like a pretty good idea to me. What do you think?
Webnretail

Hi! Looking for a way to get heard??
My name is Claudia, I work for a company called Web 'n Retail and we specialize in web marketing. I know Independent bands like yours don't have a lot of money to spend, but I also know that D.I.Y is the future of the business and we want to give you a hand.
We are very excited to offer our brand new Indie artist 6-month subscription marketing campaign at just $100 a month. If you have four band members, that’s merely $25 per band member per month. We charge record labels $2012 for the same services, but you’ll get it for $600. Take a look at some of the artists that we’ve previously provided our services for.
Partial Client List: bit.ly/ProjectList (http://bit.ly/ProjectList)
Click here to see everything we will do for you for just $100 a month. www.bit.ly/6moCampaign (http://bit.ly/6moCampaign)
If you are serious about getting your new album or single out there, our subscription package does just that; it gets the word out in a big way and drives traffic to your website of choice. Additionally, our services more often than not put your album or track(s) at the top of many Google searches as well!
Over the course of 6 months, we will post your info and music 10 times every month on news aggregator and bookmark sharing sites. We’ll e-blast your info and music to 2000 radio stations or 2000 press sites. We’ll post on 10 major PR distribution sites, and we’ll get you exposure in clubs and with DJs and podcasters; if you have a video, we’ll also get you exposure in restaurants, hotels, clothing stores, theme parks, and on cruise ships.
To round off our 6 month campaign, we will include your music in our virally marketed monthly top 10 CD or download list, and finish up by submitting your URL of choice to 75,000 global search engines. Before we start the process, we will also help you sign up with royalty organizations so that you will be paid for any of your music played on the Internet or in clubs.
If any of this sparked your interest, e-mail me back here or give me a call at 818.453.8777

LISTEN TO RACING HOMER!!!
myspace.com/racinghomer
http://www.altsounds.com might be worth a shot. It gets around 50,000 unique visitors per month. We sent a self-made press release their way announcing that our record was free and they posted it verbatim. Here's the link in case someone wants to try their hand at getting a similarly written piece posted on the site: http://hangout.altsounds.com/news/120045-a-common-year-offer-album-for-free-download.html.
It definitely spiked visits to our sites and increased our album download rate for a couple days. Worth a try. Just make sure you send it as if an outside party sent it. Instead of saying "hey dudes, check out my band," try just sending a well-written release in the third person, with no personal note or explanation.

please delete this. this is a thread to help other musicians, not promote your own shit. make your own thread like everyone else
In what way exactly is this thread supposed to help musicians if you're not supposed to promote your music? Are you supposed to give places where you CAN promote your music? I'm not trying to be a smartass. I'm asking an honest question.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned bandcamp yet. It's an amazing new site that lets artists put up their music for stream and download in a very user and artist friendly format. It's clean and customizable, and you can sell physical merch through there as well as change prices, add songs and put liner notes, lyrics, etc all with just the click of a mouse. There's no middle man (cd baby, tunecore) that takes money and time to get a song put up on itunes or amazon and listeners get to choose the kind of file they download so they don't have to be stuck with a shitty Mp3. Instead they can grab a wav, Flac, AAC, etc.
Check out www.bandcamp.com for more info.
To see what a bandpage looks like in action you can head to http://buckeyeknoll.bandcamp.com
I highly recommend bandcamp as a tool for DIY musicians.
How exactly do you get people to follow or listen to your band? Cause I just started a bandcamp page for my band and I don't really get how to really put it out there

If you read the first post, you would see this was a place to post links to other sites that help network/promote your band. Most other musicians (aside from a few idiots) have been sharing some great sites to help your band. To promote your music, make your own thread like all the other bands have.

One of Bandcamp's strengths and weaknesses is that it does not have a social networking component. Personally that is one of the very attractive parts of bandcamp since everywhere else is weighed down by all the social network bullshit. What this means for you is that it's up to the musician to promote and drive people to their bandcamp site. Many musicians I know use it as their music store since you can customize everything on it so easily and you can even create a domain name that links straight to your bandcamp page. Example: http://buymymusic.com
Fact is you have to bring people to your bandcamp site. It's awesome for streaming music, lyrics, production notes and of course selling or giving away music for whatever price you desire.
Hope this helps a bit.

I don't think last.fm has been promoted yet.
You can give free downloads, and interact directly with people you know like your genre of music. Since last.fm tracks all of your library and listening habits, bands are able to see who you like, and connect to people who like their RIYL bands.
Also, once the word is out among those who have similar artists in their library, you can interact with your listeners simply by visiting your band page.
I actually still gain quite a few fans through myspace. It's a good place to start at least.

Hey man, would mind including my pop punk blog, Late Night Sing-Alongs (http://www.latenightsingalongs.com), on that list? We're starting to do more news/ interviews/reviews, but we also put up free downloads from up and coming bands in the genre and this is something we will always continue to do. Basically all of the music we post have been given to us from the bands themselves to post.

I just launched a new site this weekend, you can check it out at www.mymusicscene.com. Here's what the site is all about.
myMusicScene is specifically designed for bands, artists and performers alike to promote all of your live performances and events. It's an easy-to-use, free promotional tool and the one place on the web where fans can find all of their music scene's artist's live performances right that day on the main page (and also find their favorite artist's event's all listed on your own profile). A fan can easily launch MMS and choose their local "scene" to find out what events are happening that very day and at what time, as well as information for upcoming events that week or even events planned farther down the road.
Put yourself in your fan's shoes: It's Friday night. You're in the mood to go to a concert, but you don't know which of your favorite local artists are performing tonight, let alone if they're performing tonight or with who. Instead of browsing around to their multiple social networking profiles to get the latest scoop, you wish to yourself that you could see every local artist that was playing a show tonight in your area.
This is where myMusicScene comes in.
Benefits of signing up on myMusicScene include -
- Your own artist profile with a custom URL to promote your events!
- Your show is listed on the front page of our website the day of and in the proper scene viewable for all visitors to see!
- Make new fans by listing your other social networking sites which are displayed in your myMusicScene profile when a new fan views your profile!
- Wish to see a new feature in myMusicScene? We're all ears! We work with our community one-on-one to build a better myMusicScene each and every day.
- It's free!
In just over 36 hours, we've received over 600 unique page visits from different countries around the world including Mexico, France, Belgium, Colombia, Austria, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and more! Join a community of artists on a brand new site that's spreading rapidly across the web!

My site, http://hearhearmusic.com, was built to provide as much press for up-and-coming / unsigned bands as I give to artists who are already signed. Feel free to email me at kroessman@gmail.com if you're a band and you have:
a) an album to promote for review only (send me a digital download .. I won't share it)
b) a single you'd like to promote ... and are willing to allow me to post, along with bio material
c) if you're interested in doing an interview, we can talk, but I'd still need to hear your music first.
If you email me, just please mention Hear Hear in your subject line so I can archive your email separate from everything else :)
I listen to as much music as I can, and try to respond to everything I receive, even if it's not going to make it onto the site. I know how important feedback is for independents.
Rock on, this thread is awesome!
EDIT: Also, please try to read through some of my site's reviews to get an idea if you're a good fit ... screaming metal 99% of the time won't make the site, just so you're aware :) There's got to be at least some sense of melodic structure or hook to get my attention :)

Does anyone know of other sites that run Free Music Friday-type promotions? What's up with the Anti-MySpace attitude this site has? Most of the sites in the OP can't be getting that great of web traffic! Check the stats on any reliable source and MySpace is up there, still. If I have to prove my point with references, I will. Purevolume... why? :-d They only allow 4 songs unless you pay! SoundClick.com allows unlimited uploads!

NOBODY I know uses myspace. If you aren't logged in, you can only listen to one full song. The site is barely functional and ugly as hell. Bandcamp needs to be the new standard for sharing your music, either stream or download.

That's nice. Magically wave your wand and make people go to Bandcamp. I'm sure it'll work fine ;-)
Dude, I'm on B'camp right now as we speak trying to update my album. Do you know how freakin' sloooooooooooowww that thing is? Try about an hour per song! And I know it's not my connection because I uploaded .wav's to Cd Baby and it didn't take near this freaking long!
Put any band that's doing anything at all in to Google or Yahoo. MySpace will come up in probably the 1st 10 (or less) hits you get. Guaranteed.
I know Bandcampl let's people do albums & have a cool design without pay, but be realistic. It's not no social hotspot. Tumblr makes more sense than that!
It's been a couple of weeks since I had a Google alert on MySpace, so I'm sure there's more to be found than here, but this is what I collected over the past couple of months:

MySpace is involved in promoting the Big Easy Express Documentary, a celebration of musical heritage:

And also according to CommScore, it's the 50th most popular site in the US:

MySpace is still in the top 10 Social networking sites, beating out Google+, according to Nielsen:
http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/online_mobile/nielsens-tops-of-2011-digital/
(Scroll down to the chart were MySpace is mentioned.)
A recent survey of Internet Privacy issues showed MySpace still used by a healthy one-third of those in the study:

And is in the Top 7 trending brands on Twitter:

Google lists MySpace as #61 out of the Top 1000 sites worldwide, with over 45 Million unique visitors and over 1 Billion page views! It's still ahead of Tumblr & HuffPo. Surprisingly, Reddit is nowhere in sight:
http://www.google.com/adplanner/static/top1000/
Just looking at that list and counting Social networking sites, MySpace comes in at number 5.
And it's still beating out Tumblr, Pinterest & Google+ according to CommScore:

Battle over hot Brit band
Last Updated: 12:17 AM, March 20, 2012
Posted: 10:48 PM, March 19, 2012
Sean Parker’s Spotify went into battle with Myspace, co-owned by Justin Timberlake (who played Parker in “The Social Network”), over the hot band Mumford & Sons at the South by Southwest festival in Austin. Management for the Grammy-nominated British folk rockers negotiated with both Myspace and Spotify about playing at their respective parties during the festival. Sources tell us Facebook co-founder Parker was keen for Mumford to perform at Spotify’s Thursday night bash in Austin alongside A$AP Rocky. But a source told us, “Sean really wanted Mumford & Sons . . . but in the end Mumford played the Myspace show Saturday night at the University of Texas to 8,000 fans.” Despite that (and rumors that Parker may still be sore over Timberlake’s portrayal of him in the Facebook flick), Parker still was not going to miss the band. Our source said, “Imagine everyone’s surprise when Parker then showed up at the Myspace concert to check out the competition.” Bryan Ling, who manages LA group Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, who appear with Mumford & Sons in the film “Big Easy Express,” told us he had negotiated with both Spotify and Myspace, but decided to go with the latter because it was the better platform to promote the movie, which world-premiered at SXSW. Ling said, “This wasn’t about money, this was about the film. We wanted to do something special to promote the film. I came to Sean and Spotify with the idea, but we realized Myspace had the better platform to show the trailer, and through that fans would sign up for the show. The bands didn’t get paid.” Despite that, Parker was in fine fettle at SXSW, boldly declaring that Spotify “will overtake iTunes in terms of the amount of revenue we contribute to the music labels in under two years.” Myspace declined to comment.

It takes me like 20 seconds to upload songs to bandcamp...not sure why it's taking so long for you. But I guarantee you more people check facebook/bandcamp/soundcloud then myspace these days. Most blogs/sites/labels I've seen lately specifically ask you NOT to submit myspace links, and to use soundcloud/bandcamp.

I just NOW finished the last track out of 12 I was updating! Albeit I took a nap for part of it, but that was because it kept me up all night long! Almost 24 hour ordeal. M-(
MySpace isn't much better for .wavs, but I can choose .wma or another format if I want, so that there's less hassle.
All all I have to say is those labels are either not worth much or they aren't caught up yet. That link I posted where MySpace beat out Spotify for the Mumford & Sons concert settles the issue as far as I'm concerned.
Who the F needs labels in the age of the internet, anyway? ;-) Labels, PRO's, publishers - they ALL just want a cut. PRO's like ASCAP & BMI have been going around getting open mics shut down, which hurts musicians in the long run. The less middlemen, the more freedom for me.
Fuck labels, man. With a CD Baby account I have a 5-album record deal, that I paid for MYSELF. Nobody's breaking that contract, and I can take as long as I damn well want.
PS: Adele was discovered on her MySpace, so you might want to enlighten those labels, because it's still a force no matter what they "think."

MySpace is in the top 10 social sites, still:
http://www.hitwise.com/us/datacenter/main/dashboard-10133.html
Where are purevolume, bandcamp & soundcloud ANYWHERE on that page?
MySpace is number #158 worldwide:
http://www.alexa.com/topsites/global;6
But Bandcamp must be doing better, right? Well, put their name into the Alexa search engine and see what comes up:
2,337!!!
MySpace is Number 50 in the US according to CommScore:
http://www.webpronews.com/top-50-sites-in-the-u-s-according-to-comscore-2012-02
Again, where do you see Bandcamp on that list?
See, it isn't about what you or I "like" or what we think is "cool," but what objective marketing research is telling us. The numbers don't lie.

shanghai is the most populous city in the world, doesn't mean it's not crappy.
Point taken. I don 't think MySpace is at the lowest point in it's functionality, given it's whole history. People have forgotten the days when you would try to go somewhere and run into a big white wall with an error messages saying something like "our tech team has been notified" or some such horseshit. Or how about if you happen to be up after 3am and the site is down and you have the option of playing Pac-Man? :-d Or you try to use your bulletins or email, and those are down for maintenance?
Hell, you don't even have to go to someone's profile and crawl over all their bad html anymore in order to friend request someone. You can mouse over their avatar and a balloon pops up that gives you the option to friend them! And profile 3.0 gets rid of the bad html altogether!
It's been my experience that it was pretty lousy up until it was sold last year, and even for awhile afterwards, but now other than a few minor annoyances, I can't see where the functionality is all that bad, really.
I just got rid of my Bandcamp, earlier. Seriously, I have no use for them. I get more plays in a single week on SoundClick, then I have the whole time I had a profile on B'Camp, I have no desire to sit through another ordeal like I just went through. 20 f*cking hours for a 12-track album! M-(
And if it's about getting .wav's uploaded, I'll happily PAY CD Baby to put me on Amazon & iTunes. You know, entities that people actually talk about out in the real world? Not just musicians listening to other musicians, which apparently is all Bandcamp is.

Well, now you can see for yourself. A Record company CEO and Grammy-nominated producer talks about the value of MySpace as a service to musicians, and why he wishes it would either come back or another site would step up and provide the same level of game. I didn't notice him saying "but you can park your wares on Bandcamp/Soundcloud/Reverb Nation or whatever flavor of the month OMD and it'd be just as good." He even went so far as to imply that they haven't signed anyone in 2012 because of it.
But I guess ppl can send him demos or something, since he implies they are looking for someone to sign, so there's your tip.

That article is all about how Myspace is dead and he wishes another site would start up like Myspace's heyday. If anything, that backs up my claims that the current Myspace is a ghost town. Admittedly, Bandcamp and Soundcloud lack the social networking that is needed. All I said is that if you want people to LISTEN to your music, don't rely on Myspace as you need to have an account and be logged in to listen to more than one full song, and the layout/functionality is a mess.

I wish MySpace was paying me to tell the truth, like that guy is. He's still giving you the straight up story, anyway.
Improvements MySpace has made to it's functionality:
*No more auto-play, unless you use an embedded player from another site such as SoundClick (bad side is HipHop morons can still put players random comments section. This only applies to abandoned profiles.)
*No more external html. Still has more individuality than Fb, and I can still reasonable make my page look like "me." Background, marquee, fonts, colors, widgets, etc are all still at my discretion.
*No need to go on a users page to friend request them. You can do it from their Avatar because a popup offers you that opportunity. It's a bit shaky, but go on one users friends list and start requesting their friends. There are "Friend" & "Follow" links everywhere.
*No need to go on a users page to send them a message. Even if they have profile 1.0 or 2.0, you still can avoid the nasty html that slows you down.
*Easier to surf to a users friend, photos, playlists, etc using the tabs on the right of the profile. Bad side is you can no longer hide any of those things unless you have a private profile.
*Comments MUCH easier to make. You stay on the same page the whole time! Remember when you had to go through 2 or 3 pages in order to put it though, and THEN go back on a profile just to see it?
*Still are allowed to promote yourself through friend requests. They have limited it somewhat, but it's not near as bad as Fascist Facebook.
*MySpace player works fine for me. It keeps on playing and delivering posts to my Twitter just fine. Fix your system.
*If you have a Band page, you can switch to the new Home Page system and not have to deal with the endless scrolling Stream. I guess this hasn't been made available to non-bands, yet.
*Profile Comments section now keeps a lot of strange html from wreaking havoc with your design (except imbedded players.) Now it partially hides linked pics and you just click "Show more" to see 'em.
*No more running into the dreaded "White Wall" that says the problem had been forwarded to the tech support section.
*No more down time for repairs with Email, Photos, Comments, Bulletins, etc.
*No more Pac-Man @3am! ;-)
*Promotional interaction with Reverb Nation Fan Reach. LOTS of artists still use that regularly, although it's died down, probably due to spamming complaints.
In short, there doesn't seem to be any truth to the scuttlebutt that site functionality is in the toilet. MySpace is at the peak of it's functionality and ready to rumble!
