View Full Version : Help Cartel

Cartel (http://www.cartelrocks.com) has been in the top 15 for the past few days on TRL; your vote (http://www.mtv.com/ontv/dyn/trl/series.jhtml) can help get them in the top 10.

I don't think this video is that great. I also think they could have chosen a better song for their single. If they did that, they would be 5 or higher by now. They will probably still make the countdown though.

Not exactly their best song but it is one of the catchiest. The TRL audience will eat it up. Just keep voting and get their asses on the countdown.

You have no idea how the music industry works - if you for a second think picking a different song would get them at #5 on the countdown, you're out of your mind.

I don't think anyone considers that song to be their best work.

Their song isn't the best, but I'm in the video so I'm compelled to vote like crazy. Plus Will is one of the nicest people I've met at a show.

I wish 13 year olds didn't get hooked and start coming to their shows, but if that gets them success then more power to them for sure.

They're finally getting the credit they deserve for being one of the best new pop acts these days. And Honestly is a perfect single.

yeah i keep tuning in to see if theyve made the countdown but if I dont see them at 10, 9, or 8 I turn off TRL because I cant stand it hahah and I know they wont be higher than that right now...I did watch the episode with Justin Timberlake though ahha

I also agree that Say Anything (Else) would be a good choice for the next single if Honestly doesnt make them explode....I'm kinda not wanting them to get big though because I think it will take a couple months (after the NFG tour) and that means Chroma will get more exposure, which means we wont get a new Cartel release until LATE 2007

Maybe I don't, but it is my opinion that if they chose a better single, that more people would vote for it. If they are in the top 15 now, without have a great video or their best single, than I would think they would be higher up with a better video/song.

I assure you, I am not out of my mind, Jason. That is only my opinion. I don't work in the music industry, Im a college student. You clearly know more than I do about the music industry, so how about explaining to me why I am mistaken, rather than telling me I am "out of my mind".

I actually love "Honestly", it's probably one of my favorite songs from the record, and I think that it's definitely the best pick for their first single. They have so many songs that could be singles, but "Say Anything Else" would be another good single, as would "If I Fail".

You must not get how Jason works then. He likes to belittle people and not explain to them why he hates on them, most of the time because he doesn't really have a good explantion except for the fact that they disagree with him. I get what you are saying though and it seems like a lot of other people agree, the song they picked for the single isn't the best choice, and the video isn't very good either.

You do realize - they are blowing up right? Go see them at Warped (they're drawing more than main stage bands). The fact they're in the top 15 for TRL, they're getting some radio adds, and they're building a big following (80k sold and a steady 4-5k a week). They just haven't had overnight success like P!atD did, so that's why no one notices.

Cartel are a pop-punk boyband, obviously they will blow up. New Found Glory has almost been around for 10 years and they will definitely be remembered for many many years to come. Midtown is another band that many people will remember for many years to come, as is Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional, The Get Up Kids, Saves The Day, Something Corporate, The Early November, The Starting Line, Relient K, Say Anything, The Spill Canvas, etc... A lot of bands in this "scene" make a lot of lasting and very memorable music that I'm sure people will still be listening to for many years to come (I know I will). And I don't agree when people say that Cartel is just a catchy band that has no lasting power, I think they have more to them than that and I think they are definitely capable of having a very successful and lasting career. Just look at songs like "The Minstrel's Prayer" and "A", theres more to them than just hooks and catchy melodies.

I think what chcougar1 was getting at is that none of those bands will be well remembered in the mainstream. Sure, there will always be a special place in my heart for all of those bands and I will always be willing to pop in their cd and rock out to them but I doubt those bands will be all over MTV for the next ten years unless they continue to release album after album of mainstream radio hits. So many bands have made it to the top just to be dropped back down to indie status and that sucks but that's just how the record business works. I personally love Cartel and my band is playing with them in Fort Myers, Fl. this September. I can't wait.

I'm pretty sure that only 8 of those bands you listed are somewhat "significant" but in the long run won't even matter, they'll be seen like how bands in the grunge movement were but none of them are any Nirvana (Brand New, DC, TGUK and STD talent wise yes...popularity wise no)...this music is just a trend, sure I may enjoy it but what it comes down to is that this thing is a phaze with a lot of kids, and to the bands it's a phaze to them as they either grow to become better musicians or degress into 15 minutes of fame.

and I'm pretty sure no one except Tate still cares about The Spill Canvas

Correction...ME and Tate

haha ..naw I'm sure there are a lot of Spill fans...

but yeah I was talking about huge mainstream bands that last 10 years...NFG was a good addition to the list.

I agree bands like dashboard confessional will definitely still be on my ipod in 10 years, but I did indeed mean bands that last 10 years in the mainstream eyes....not that I care because I hate the mainstream haha

oh, and I think the standards for "blowing up" should not be heald to that of FOB and Panic. When your song gets put on Kidz Bop...you've gone beyond blowing up how long until cartel is on kidz bop?

I agree bands like dashboard confessional will definitely still be on my ipod in 10 yearsI disagree, because in 10 years iPods probably aren't going to be around. That's like in 96 saying that Dookie will still be in your Discman in 10 years.

p.s I should add that I didn't read the whole thread, but if any band deserves this fame with this sound, it's Cartel

not to be an ass, but didn't you just sign up in june...?

& cartel has the sound to get into the mainstream, i just think its a matter of time.

Well, I'd say you are an ass, but I won't...I'm too nice.

If you had read what I was saying correctly, I meant n00bs in the AUGUST 2006 sense. Like, when you see a thread about a popular band (Cartel and Fall Out Boy seem to be the best examples), people sign up just to say something really negative or sound like 12-year old girls with a fetish for Googling bands and checking out any site they appear on, comprende?

I ain't sitting here saying I'm no n00b, but I've visited this site for years, and I'm good at being a post-crazy n00b. That is all.

consider me an underground trash talker/hater coming out of my cave to hate on the word n00b

and to the bands it's a phaze to them as they either grow to become better musicians or degress into 15 minutes of fame.

This is true, look at the bands mentioned earlier in the post who have remained popular for 10 years or so, for example Jimmy Eat World have consistantly released quality albums which have seen them develop as musicians meaning their song writing has also developed. Bottom line, if you regularly release good albums you are likely to attract new fans and sustain a high level of popularity for 10, 20, 30 years or more. (Hope this makes sense!)
