I've come to realize that a lot of my friends don't listen to the same music as I do. There are maybe a few bands in common, but in general, we have vastly different music tastes.
Second question: Does it matter?
LamarVannoy
04/03/10, 06:52 PM
No. We listen to completely different things and yes, it does matter.

my friends do not have the same musical tastes, and to me it does not matter.
I make my friends monthly mixes so that their musical libraries suck less.

They don't , and it shouldn't really matter if they did.

Nope haha. My best friend and I are relatively close in music taste but he's nowhere near as enthusiastic about music as I am. The rest of my friends listen to mainly pop or college-kid-indie shit
Nope. None of my friends really into the stuff as I do musically speaking but that doesn't mean I should stop being friend with them. When I need to talk to someone about music related stories I go on here.

Hardly any of my friends are into music at all. And frankly, it's never been a problem.

I have one close friend who's into a lot of the same music, but generally, no. In the past month I've seen Faith No More, Pavement, Pixies and Brand New. Almost everyone I tell about each concert has no idea who I am talking about. Even for Pixies.

i know nobody who listens to any of the stuff on this website. my friends all listen to radio pop, dance, rnb, rap or even hardstyle and techno, and call anything even remotely like this "emo" or just plain shit. obviously, it pains me.

we had to make a mix cd of 5 songs as a soundtrack for the blind side in sports lit. class. and my list included i've got friends by manchester orchestra and sowing season by brand new. we had to present them in front of the class and play one of the songs. when i played i've got friends, no one in the class had ever heard it. however, most people started asking a lot of questions about them and said they thought that song was great.
just a story i thought i'd share.

Where is the option for not having friends?
Most of my friends don't really listen to a lot of music, but I try to convert them to what I listen to all the time.

This is why the friendless feel disenfranchised! The friendless should unite and revolt, for equal poll forum rights!
(note: during said revolt everyone must be an asshole, so we don't accidently become friends.)

Most of my friends just listen to the crap that gets played on the radio, and I tend to be annoyed by that kind of music, but occasionally I'll play something that one of my friends knows. It does matter from time to time though. When they play their music for a few hours and I put up with it, then I try playing something of mine and they freak out and make me turn it off because they don't like it right away I get a little frustrated. One of my friends categorized my music as "bands that make $10,000 a year that no one listens to" despite the fact that some of the bands I listen to (Brand New, Broken Social Scene, The Strokes) are actually really famous, although I certainly do listen to music that no one else around where I live has ever heard of.

My friends just listen to whatever's on the radio for the most part, which I don't really mind if we're just hanging out at someone's house or something. I don't understand, however, people who don't care about music besides what's on the radio. To me that's like not having a favorite movie, but a lot of my friends genuinely don't care about music as long as they have something to dance to or sing to in the car

Almost all of my friends back home listen to the same stuff as me since we kinda grew up on it, but hardly any of my friends at school do. It doesn't really matter though, I'm friends with the people I am because I enjoy their company. If they listened to similar music as me it would just be a more awesome friendship I guess.

Most high-schoolers aren't into the indie scene, they just like whatever is being promoted on the radio/myspace, but there are a couple really good bands that pretty much everyone in high school is a fan of, like Blink-182, Sublime, The Beatles, etc. that I'll turn on whenever I have friends around.

For me, the differences gets annoying when it comes to concerts or long drives (with friends obviously). I've become accustomed to seeing the gazed over "I have no clue who that is" nod when I mention what concerts I've been to. But I'm still not accustomed to some of my friends hating on my music when we go for long drives. That gets annoying.

hell no, i only know about 2 people who listen to metal or other heavy stuff
but i have a few who listen to Pop Punk that i listen too, so, the majority of my friends don't have similar taste in music as me but a few do.

I have a couple friends who are very musically orientated and listen to a lot, and few that like a good amount of music that's given to them but never actually take time to search for anything new, and a friend or two who just listen to shit. It's all across the board with me.

Not really, but we do share some similar interests. They're all about teh hip hop and R&B kinda stuff, but I do make a lot of them CDs. Some of my friends, like my best friend, listen to the same music as me. But, personally, I guess it does matter if they like it or not, simply based on the fact that it's such a huge part of my life. But I've been friends with most of my friends for a really long time, so I'm not going to, like, unlike them if they don't listen to EXACTLY what I listen to, ya know? But it helps in making new friends, I have found.

It's about the same for me. We'll have a few bands/artists that we like in common, but most of my musical preferences no one likes except me, at least in my immediate circles.

it doesn't really matter.
my friends and i listen to predominantly the same music, so we give each other suggestions and such; go to shows together.
but sometimes i prefer if a couple of my friends' music taste is vastly different than mine so i can get into different sounds.
I've got a few things in common with my friends (which are mostly metal heads) so we've got that in common, and my other friend listens to country like I do, and my girlfriend and I have the indie thing in common. Other than that no one listens to the amount of music I do, nor do their tastes span past a single genre. For example my metal head friend stick to any type of metal, but nothing else. It's awkward at times.

It bothers me when people can't go beyond one genre. I admit that I stick to one genre in general, but I branch out a lot.

Yeah it's kind of tough to deal with at times. The hard part is that when I want to talk about something new I just bought or downloaded, I have to call the same people. If it's anything indie related the only person I can talk to is my girlfriend. Which obviously isn't bad, but when she's busy, or doesn't like the band, I've got no one else to enjoy them with. This goes for every genre I listen to, it's been a constant project of mine to expose my friends to other genres. I thought it was great when I received a phone call from one of my "metal" minded friends and heard him say "Yo, that song Misery Business by Paramore is fuckin' great man." He's easily made the biggest progress because he himself swings back and forth between all metal, bluegrass, and old classic rock.

i tend to make the best friends with people who are passionate enough about music to 1) find lots of underground bands on their own, 2) have the open-mindedness and breadth of appreciation to listen to music from several different genres. this doesn't always translate into us listening to the exact same bands (although with my girlfriend this is almost definitely the case) but we can usually find plenty of common ground. for example, my housemate listens mostly to the simpler and more organic sides of indie-rock as well as a large variety of metal bands, while i generally can't stand metal and the indie-rock bands i listen to are usually complex and have intricate production jobs that sometimes dabble in neo-psychedelia and artificial effects. however, he's found a couple metal bands that i really got into and likewise we share an affinity for several of the same indie-rock bands.

Same. I don't think I've talked to more than ten people who like most of what I like.
It doesn't matter if someone's musical taste differs from mine to be friends with them, but it sure would help.

No and it does kinda matter, there are some friends that truly cannot comprehend why I spend so much time and money on gigs and vinyl and they don't really let the matter drop...
However, I met my best friend through our similar music tastes and I'd rather have just that one best friend who shares my tastes than loads who love everything I listen to :)

We started off the same back in high school and veered off onto different paths for the most part, with a few bands in common. I tend to be too proactive in listening to music so they can't keep up with me (or they just don't like what I'm listening to).

Oh man. Where to begin.
My best friend and I are on the same page as far as music goes. We love music, we love going to shows, we love finding new bands, we love to let music influence us... she lives in 500 miles away. I go to shows alone a lot! It sucks because all my local friends just don't have good musical taste! I try to convert them over but it's so hard in this pop/"slap your bitch" rap/current musical world we're all submerged in... and I just want to shake people! Aaaaaah! There's so much better shit out there, guys! Get with it!!! Hahahaha. No but seriously, it does matter to me because to me, music is huge. It's my life. It stirs emotion up within me. Certain songs can really move me and I just want EVERYONE I know to be influenced in the same way, and it just doesn't happen! Music is so amazing... I am so grateful I am able to get that out of certain band, but apparently not everyone is like that! Thank god for my BFF. <3 you, Panda!
I voted no, but we do have some stuff in common. However after reading most of these comments, my friends do listen to a lot of similar stuff to me compared to most people on here. Two of my best friends listen to really similar stuff as me. My other best friend listens to a lot of prog. and most of my girl friends and my girlfriend listen to pretty shitty radio stuff.

Generally speaking -- in terms of really broad genres -- sure. Where specific artists/albums are concerned, not really.
It also doesn't matter to me in the least. Hell, the best conversations I've ever had about music have been with people who prefer different tunes.
