View Full Version : Powerful Moments in Modern Cinema

Pretty simple. What are some of your favorite powerful moments and scenes in movies? Scenes that stand out or give you goosebumps, etc. Off the top of my head:
Magnolia: When Frank sees his father for the first time in years (that whole ending climax with all the characters is noteworthy)
Reqiuem for a Dream: When the characters all hit rock bottom (could be filed under 'favorite ending', but it's a pretty intense/memorable bit)
The Matrix Revolutions: Final Fight. (only good part about that movie....)
Return of the King: To fucking many to name. When Rohan arrives, inside the Crack of Doom, outside the Crack of Doom, Aragorn's speech, etc.etc.

I think in Saving Private Ryan when one of the soldiers is dying with his guts exposed and he starts calling out to his mom.
That part was crazy. Had to keep making sure my eyes were dry.

Boogie Nights - The donut shop scene.
Boogie Nights - The "coke" dealing scene.
Not really emotional or anything, but for some reason that scene is like my favorite of all time. I'll try to think of a powerful moment in a minute or two.

That was my favorite part of the movie.
Also, cliche, but the end of Garden State.

Shit, how could I forget Crash. good one. I thought the most powerful moment was when the officer rescues that lady from the burning car. I whole back story, the music, the way it was shot, the anxiety, so fucking immense.
Also, cliche, but the end of Garden State.
Good call, probably one of the only movies that my eyes really really really teared up at, which is weird because it wasn't even that sad. Just the music and all was fucking powerful.

for some reason, i dont know why my favotire part is when zach braff goes into "I was a little boy and somebody made a shitty latch. That's what I think"
also when natalie portman starts dancing and the music comes on is an awesome part/ weird i know but those parts always got me.

Rushmore - Most of the film amazes me.
Saving Private Ryan - The scene where the Jewish soldier gets stabbed very slowly by the German. That shit always gets me. Most horrible death scene in cinema.
Serenity - When a well known character gets killed unexpectedly (didnt want to spoil who for those who havent seen it)
Collateral: The camera goes from the quiet street, to Max (Foxx), to Vincent (Cruise), to a lone wolf that's crossing the street infront of the cab, and that cues Audioslave's "Shadow Of The Sun".
You have to see it, it's cinema perfected.
Health Inspector: when LtCG looks into the camera and says "get-er-done" Best cinematic moment in all of movies. this man has oscar written all over him.
so i wrote that lame attempt at humor and realized something. here is a guy who created a character that he will be playing his whole life. this character is making fun of the same type people who buy his albums and give him money. in that respect he is almost a Kaufman level genious.

I have watched this film about 15 times, and have cried at least half the times I have watched it.
The whole speach about how once you move out of your house, it is no longer your home (So true)
The confrontation with his father at the end (the shitty latch bit)
When he is in the bath tub with Natalie Portman and he says "You make me feel safe"

The end of American History X
The scene in the desert when John is talking to the Terminator in Terminator 2.(It's quite possibly my favorite scene of all time)
The end of Gladiator
The scene in Forest Gump when he's talking to Jenny as she's about to pass and he tells her about all he saw while he was running.

I thought it was pretty funny. But LtCG is not a comedic genious, by no stretch. I think Kaufman did what he did conciously. LtCG is just doing stupid humor for stupid people, nothing more. I don't think Kaufman's audience were stupid.

I can't watch that scene anymore. It is the most disturbing part of the movie

It is amazingly acted but just so slow and horrible...how the knife goes in so slowly and he is just goes into a complete spasm. Most horrible death scene ever.
Also, in that movie, I don't know anyone who isn't gutted when the sniper gets blown up by the sniper.
Every time, I'm like "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!"

Forrest Gump - Tom Hanks talking to Jenny at her gravesite at the end, particularly, "If you ever need anything, I won't be far away."
Eternal Sunshine - The last scene before his memory erasing is complete, the dialogue was perfect. "It's gonna be over soon, Joel. What should we do?", "Enjoy it."
I thought it was pretty funny. But LtCG is not a comedic genious, by no stretch. I think Kaufman did what he did conciously. LtCG is just doing stupid humor for stupid people, nothing more. I don't think Kaufman's audience were stupid.
It wasnt till i saw an old clip of larry the cable guy doing stand up under his real name that i realized that it is all an act. he is a smart man exploiting the very people to fund him. LtGC is very concious of what he is doing. i agree Kaufman's suidence wasnt stupid but he was playing his audience for fools most of the time.

I liked the whole ending to "A Walk to Remember", the talk Shane West's character has with the Reverend and the voiceover at the end. Not necessarily "powerful" but it definitely strokes my tear ducts. Most of my "powerful" moments have been said. Definitely the most powerful, but deeply disturbing, is the German soldier stabbing the Jewish soldier in "Saving Private Ryan".

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - The Orcs are basically kicking the shit out of them, so they retreat back to the inner part of Helms Deep. Aragorn tells Theoden that they should ride out and meet them..then there's that line that gives you goosebumps, "Let this be the hour, that we draw swords...together." It's such a powerful line, along with the great background music. Then they ride out and start slaying all the Orcs, and finally Gandalf comes with Rohan's army. The whole ending to that battle scene is perfect.
Also, someone said in the movie Collateral, the scene where it's all quiet and they just show you Max and Vincent in the cab, then the wolf crossing the road. With the music and all, it's great. Also, in Apollo 13 there are two scenes that come to mind, one was when they had to manually get the Earth back in the view of the ship's window. It was such an intense scene, all three actors did amazing work in that scene. The second scene is where they realize they're venting the Oxygen into space. Everyone is trying to figure out what's going on, and then it's quiet and Tom Hanks just says, "Houston, we're venting something into space. It's definitely a gas, it looks like our Oxygen." The whole scene is so quiet, it's the most obvious climax in the movie.

I have to say, I almost cried when I saw Lilo and Stitch
Jurassic Park: When they see the long-neck bitches for the first time, and any time they play the theme. The theme is perfection. Music like that can really make your hair stand up.

Completely agree with you both.
The handcuff/toilet scene in The Boondock Saints (only the part where he just finds out they're going to shoot his bro), the last scene with Rocco, and the ending court scene.
The Hills Have Eyes, all of the revenge, haha.
The Exorcist, "Did you see what she did? Your cunting daughter?" scene.
So fucking creepy.

one of my favorite movies, but the ending surprised me. it was the cliche movie thing to do i guess, but i don't know. i guess i was expecting something more original.
i think the opening scene on the plane is really powerful. and when they are all standing in the rain, screaming their lungs out.
and when he's talking to his father, and he says "when was this time that we were all happy?" that whole part, actually.
