no thread for this?

Release date: June 4th, 2010

Elsa (Sarah Polley) and Clive (Adrien Brody) are a brilliant couple, biochemists who have figured out how to successfully combine different forms of animal DNA into a single creature. Their breakthroughs have many implications for the fields of science and health, but they have yet to crack the final frontier: an animal-human hybrid. When their superiors threaten to shut down their engineering project and put a stop to any further innovations, Elsa and Ed decide to take matters into their own hands.

Surprised there's no thread already, but I bet it's been discussed in Horror. I'm excited about it, definitely intrigued.

It looks good. Steve from Collider (http://www.collider.com/2010/04/02/trailer-for-splice-starring-adrien-brody-and-sarah-polley/) said it was on of the best films at this years Sundance. So i'm pumped.

The version at Sundance was this
This shit is crazy. So the little creature grows super fast, and it grows into an eerily pixie-pretty freak animal-human creature. And blondie secretly used her own DNA to create her. Right? In one of the pivotal scenes, Adrian Brody thinks he is in a porno and actually has (somewhat graphic, crazy) sex with the creature, who is hormonal as all hell. And Sarah Polley walks in on them and is like. what. the. fuck. They (FINALLY) decide that it’s all gone too far, and they need to put little Dren down. Only Dren dies. . .but she doesn’t, because the thing with these manufactured creatures is that eventually they turn into males (???). So Dren comes back from the dead as a freaky male monster. And then it RAPES Sarah Polley (who, I remind you, was the creature’s “mother” and also they share DNA). Adrian Brody stabs it, but before Polley can deliver the final blow, it kills Brody with its weird tail-spike. Sarah Polley kills it. But then it turns out she’s totally pregnant, and she agrees to have the crazy hybrid incest rape monster baby if her company pays her a billion dollars. For science!!!

Ya. The line for me and sci-fi is a very thin one. If it isn't out of this world great (Star Wars, Alien, Event Horizon, Sunshine, Wrath of Kahn), then I probably won't like it all too much. I think it looks good on paper and the trailer is promising, but the reviews haven't been very good at all. I'll definitely be checking it out eventually, but it is definitely a renter for me.

Haha, ya, I mean, it prly seems weird because you know how nerdy I am and how into horror I am (two things that usually go w/ science fiction pretty well). I can get down with the crossover aspect (horror with sci-fi elements..see: The Re-animator, which is a brillllllliant film), but yeah, straight up science fiction is super hit or miss with me.

Just got back from the screening. Good movie overall. Some of the parts were over-the-top insane and weird, but I honestly feel it was better off pushing its boundaries instead of staying safe. The Q&A the director did helped clear up some of the odd decisions made too.

But yeah, it's definitely worth checking the movie out. I've never really seen anything quite like it and it would have been worth buying a ticket for it.

Essentially, an executive producer in film is the person that takes the script to the studio and says, "Hey read this, it's good," and that's about it. They're more putting their name on it to say that they personally think it's rad. This is advantageous for smaller films to get optioned by a bigger studio. They have zero input creatively. Dunno if that makes sense, but yeah.

Some of the scenes they put in the movie made you wonder what anyone was thinking when they green lit this project. It cant have cost much due to the lack of scenery. The whole movie took place in a lab/barn/office. The characters never went out of those areas

Anywho, just read this tidbit from a site I go to every once in awhile.

So i got to see Splice early…i’d been waiting a long time for this one, and am fucking beside myself and all kinds of giddy to report that it was ever so worth it. It’s interesting that this isn’t the best work by any of the names involved – it’s not the best Vincenzo Natali film (that would still be Cypher), it’s not Adrien Brody’s best (that’s The Jacket), and nor is it the best thing Sarah Polley’s been in (that would probably be the depressingly underseen No Such Thing and/or Atom Egoyan’s The Sweet Hereafter)…and yet Splice is still so astoundingly good that it takes a commanding lead in front of the best movies of 2010.

Haha, yeah, I could tell that she was probably a good looking woman.

went back and finished that last article I posted after seeing it and damn, that third paragraph is spot-on. I particularly liked this excerpt:
Agreed. I wasn't sure how they wanted me to feel whatsoever. I'm still thinking about it, which is a good thing.

Dren.
Twins. The first thing I was gonna do after I got home was Google her to see how hot she was under the makeup, lol.

Acting was great, awesome pacing (third act was a rush), loved that there were only a few locations and not many actors, fx were solid, makes you think about it. It was good sci-fi. Didn't ever feel hokey to me, which is where it could have veered way off path. And like I said before, a couple what the fuck moments that no one could have ever really seen coming. Perfect amount of comedy thrown in. It was a good movie. I don't get what there was to hate whatsoever. Even negative reviews i have read (besides yours) weren't scathing, they just didnt really buy into the concept.

just got back from this. Horrible

3 sets. about 3 actors. didnt care about the science project. Some of the scenes in the movie had people laughing at it. Other scenes had every saying WTF. I talked to a couple people and they all said they didnt like it.

I'm not even sure i would recommend a rental on this one

i think my biggest issue was from the start. I didnt know who the 2 scientists were (nothing is given) so i just never cared about them. And the 2nd half of the movie didnt help these initial feelings, they actually just added to my dislike for the 2 characters

and lack of action in the first half of the film, i felt it took to long to get going (see: the sequencing montages ugh)

I'd say a 10 for sure. I couldn't believe how bad this movie was. It was definitely more of a comedy than drama/whatever they were trying to go for. It is second weirdest movie I have ever seen, next to Fear and Loathing. But at least that was a good movie.

Well I just thought the whole premise of the film was comedy. The scene where Adrian Brody dances with Dren was hilarious. That shot of them holding hands spinning around, how could you not laugh. Then they go to bang each other. What the hell was that?

Dren then proceeds to change into a dude and has sex with the girl (don't know her name) and gets her pregnant. The movie was so bad it was hilarious. They weren't trying to be funny, but they sure had the whole theater I saw it with laughing.

You went into it with the complete wrong attitude, maintained that whatever vibe you had was the vibe the film was giving off, and then watched the rest of the movie being that guy. I hate to say this, but you flat out didn't "get" it. The dance part was supposed to be light/fun. Clive teaching Dren, in her adolescence, about music and dancing like any father would. The entire segment showed them growing together as a "family" for lack of better term. And he kept seeing part of Elsa in her more and more as she grew up (eventually culminating in him going to Elsa about it). The part where they made love was the climax (hut hut) of him growing attached to the part of Dren that he was already in love with (Elsa). A film like this is so complex in a lot of ways and for you to laugh it off is a discredit to the art as a whole and really shows your ignorance. But, whatever. Obviously not going to change your mind. I'm just glad that the people that I generally agree w/ when it comes to film are in complete agreement with me.

Just because a person doesn't like a movie doesn't mean they are ignorant, just means that they aren't into the same art that you are. Get over it.
