Secret & Whisper – Teenage Fantasy
Release Date: April 6, 2010
Record Label: Tooth & Nail

Is it considered “biting” when the band in question does it better than the original? In the case of Secret & Whisper’s new album, Teenage Fantasy, I say no. While Saosin popularized the style (high-pitched singing backed by ultra-fast guitar riffs and power chords), the band formerly known as Stutterfly has improved upon it. It’s also not fair to compare this album to Saosin since their last release was a dump of a record. So let’s just get it out of the way. Teenage Fantasy is as high-octane as albums come: it’s furiously in your face and can hold its own within this genre, as Charles Furney’s vocals are a cross between Cove Reber and Anthony Green.

In fact, Teenage Fantasy would have been the record that a Green-led Saosin would have created. After being delayed constantly, the album will not disappoint fans. Opening track, “Youth Cats” begins with Furney crooning over David Ecker and Jason Ciolli’s spastic guitar riffs, developing into a huge chorus. “Warrior (Southern Arrowwood)” features riffs underneath the thunderous percussion of drummer Ryan Loerke, while Furney's voice hits ridiculous highs during the chorus of “Bedroom Galaxy.”

But Teenage Fantasy also lets up on the gas a bit, as “Tiny Sparkle” and “Edge of Wilderness” feature the progressive nature of Circa Survive. The rip-roaring “Famous For A Century” destroys everything in its path, much like Terry Crews in that one commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MG0VGbcMeNM). “Pretty Snarl” leads perfectly into the piercingly melodic “Star Blankets,” while sobriety and intensity are balanced nicely on “Whale Bones.” The weakest part of the album is Furney’s lyrics, as they are fairly pedestrian. But when a band can create songs like “Silver Mountain,” a composition that fully encompasses the listener, you tend to forget the lyrical shortcomings.

It’s fairly evident that Teenage Fantasy possesses quite more edge than its predecessor Great White Whale. It’s a hell of a rocker, full of crunching guitar riffs and slick production. Not to mention, Charles Furney has a fantastic voice. On this record, perhaps Secret & Whisper realized that to stop people from comparing them to Saosin, they’d have to be better than Saosin. And on Teenage Fantasy, they accomplish that convincingly and more.

I really like this album. It might not be much different from their last, but I am quite ok with that.

I hated their first album and thought that their newer tracks were a yawn. Pretty cliched.

But this is a pretty positive review and I typically respect your opinions.

Anyone else got thoughts on this album to help me decide whether its worth a listen. Cause this put it on my list.

is Saosin the only band allowed to use this style? A lot of music isn't original these days, it's how a band executes it and presents it.

Well I don't mean it in that sense, it's just going to be annoying seeing all these people compare them to Saosin and Circa even more so after they hear this. I would just like to see them attempt something different the next time, maybe go a little more experimental or something. I agree that they did it better than Saosin this time around but I just want to see what else they are capable of doing.

okay, I can agree with them getting a bit more experimental. I think they did tinker with a few more things this time around than on their debut. Songs like Silver Mountain and Tiny Sparkle for example.

It would be great if they did more songs like those two, I love the various sounds in them. It's weird though, when I listen to the experimental-ish SAW songs, it feels like I'm underwater. It's such a cool feeling. haha.

To me, they sound like Circa Survive crossed with Mew. I agree it's in the same line as their debut but it's still an amazing record!

Maybe just something other than "Artist description---> Song description (including member description)--->Difference/Anomolies---->end".
You just seem to be to formulaic. I know it's a review and not a fucking crime novel, but maybe just something with a bit less neutrality.

At least he tells me what the damn album sounds like, unlike some staff reviewers here who are great prose-wise and can tell me their opinion on the album well, but can't tell me what the fucking album sounds like. That's why Drew's reviews are my favourite on the site. I come out of his reviews and know if it's a CD I want to check out, which is all I need from a review.

Well like Drew said that's his writing style, he feels comfortable and confident writing in that style so why would he change it passed on one guy with a Batman avatar.

I like the style it tells you everything you want to know about a album from a review without a long bulky boring intro.

Keep it up Drew.

And great review, I love this record and cant stop listening to it, better then Great White Whale which was also awesome.

I think they're great too, don't change a thing Drew! Awesome review for what I'm sure is gonna be an awesome album.

I'm even more excited that you said this was the album a Green-led Saosin would've made. I know they're different bands, but I'm still hoping in a way that Teenage Fantasy makes up for the awful In Search of Solid Ground.

Soooooo happy that you incorporated an analogy (and a link) to the Old Spice commercial! Those things make me laugh EVERY time.

Also, kind of upset these guys keep getting grouped in with Saosin. Let them be their own band and keep making their brand of music...not Anthony's Saosin tunes.

THIS.

And FYI all of you, for Secret and Whisper this IS experimental.

If you've listened to Charles' old band, thebleedingalarm, his vocals have changed quite a bit from then, and if you listen to Stutterfly you can tell that the rest of the band TOTALLY changed their style.

So seriously. Shut up about not being experimental, please. As a band they have changed so much from when they all first started, and I think Teenage Fantasy takes pretty big steps to the side from Great White Whale.

I used to write this band off because of the blatant Saosin influence but after the snoozefest that was ISOSG I'm willing to accept that these guys have a place in my library now. Still...

Saosin - s/t > Secret and Whisper > Saosin - ISOSG

I'm LOVING this album. I disagree that the album isn't experimental in places- it has some very unique songs on it (Tiny Sparkle, Edge of Wilderness, Pretty Snarl, Whale Bones, and Silver Mountain all come to mind), and the guitar work on the less experimental songs just RAGES. As much as I loved Great White Whale, this is a step up in every way.

I also enjoy the lyrics a lot. They're kind of bizarre, and the infatuation with ocean life is just strange and prevalent enough that it gives the lyrics their own unique flavor. I don't think they're amazing, but they're weird and they're a lot more interesting to me than your standard high school breakup fare.

LOVE the new stuff!
these guys are soooo chill. Jordan the bassist is hillarious and such a people person
Charles stood behind the merch table himself and hung out. The whole band chilled for at least an hour after their show in KC last year. Jason can KILL it live. Guy is so entertaining to watch.
Love these guys; yes they sound similar to old Saosin and some Circa but I cannot compare them. I'm sure these guys are getting tired of being compared.
Progressed from their first release.

04/05/10, 02:30 PM
The album is solid and very creative. Charles does not sound like either of those wieners! And if you actually knew him, you would understand his lyrics. There actually very real, metaphoric, and powerful! And that's what makes it so real and believable. Unlike a lot of others I must say. Secret & Whisper is going to replace bands like Saosin in a heartbeat. The album is an easy 8/10 i would say for most listeners. It lands a 10 in my books but I always leave room for Jordan and the teams creativity to impress me more over. They will never stop growing and will continue to impress. Great band. Great Music. Buy the record.

Secret & Whisper is one goliath of a band.
We're in 2010 for god's sake. Saosin is old news, so stop writing SAW down as if they were nothing but mere copy cats.
They are everything a real band should be; uncompromising and honest.
At least show a bit of respect for all the hard work they've put into their band.

The only thing I was a little disappointed in was they didn't really have a "Great White Whale" song that ended the album with an amazing grand finale, though Silver Mountain still did a good job bringing the album to a close.

Plus I'm glad that others see that they have surpassed the current Saosin; it's about time SaW got their due. A bit on the short side, but a good review nonetheless.

hope it's good. but still, stutterfly was amazing.
oh yes, this. this isnt half as heavy as stutterfly used to be, especailly musically. really, this album is a good bit softer than the first album, so i dont get the reviews that say this album "rages", cuz it really doesnt, but its still good.

I had know clue these guys used to be Stutterfly.

At least he tells me what the damn album sounds like, unlike some staff reviewers here who are great prose-wise and can tell me their opinion on the album well, but can't tell me what the fucking album sounds like. That's why Drew's reviews are my favourite on the site. I come out of his reviews and know if it's a CD I want to check out, which is all I need from a review.
this. all day long. dont try to be crass. just tell me what the shit sounds like.

I wouldn't say the album rages in a heavy "chugga chugga" way, but a lot of the guitar work is super intense. There's a lot of fast, technical playing on here, and they like to add minor variations when the same part repeats in a song that go a long way towards establishing a sense of momentum.

this album is the direction i expected Saosin to go in, while Saosin"s ISOSG was more of what i had expected from this band. this is MUCH greater than ISOSG, good job secret and whisper

You people/morons still don't understand a damn thing.
Someone's a little butthurt. Not like anyone's bashing them. In fact, most of the people here are either intrigued, or already impressed with the album.

I remember when Stutterfly were just starting out and they recorded at my friends studio in Orlando and than a while later they were on tour with Bedlight for Blue Eyes... I liked them okay, but they didn't stick. I really like what I have heard of this album. Never listened to the first. I hate the title though.

Is it just me or does the review praise this album more than the score? Maybe it is just me, but reading this review I am thinking it is probably around 80 at least.

Ugh, I hate how people hate on their lyrics. Whatever happened to people enjoying creative and imaginative lyrics? Charles does a fantastic job of creating imagery which is in turn reflected perfectly by the music itself. Its nice to hear a band that doesn't just have a single statement that they find 100 differant ways of saying and then CRUUUUUSH it with hundreds of unnecessary adjectives. There is a difference between genuine creativity and an extensive vocabulary.

No. I love SAW because of their sound, but the lyrics are sooooo eye-roll worthy. They haven't been posted anywhere online yet (as far as I can find), but one of the tracks said something about "suntan lotion" and "my waterbed". C'mon... genuine creativity? That's Hannah Montana shit there.

If he's trying to capture the feeling of youth, which is one of the main focuses of teenage fantasy, he's going to use lighthearted words like "suntan lotion" and "water bed" its simply a matter of what is appropriate for the intended portrayal of a feeling.

its so great how everyone compares this band to Saosin like its some kind of battle. because you know, Saosin is in fact the ONLY band on earth who is allowed to use that style. anyone who comes even somewhat close must then be forever compared side to side with them in a competitive sense.

im sure when Saosin made their newest album they were like "instead of thinking about creativity lets focus on how it will sound compared to S&W". and we all know that S&W in the studio were thinking " lets make a record thats better than Saosin's."

I really liked this review i haven't made it through the whole album yet but it shows some promise. I think this band is really good and i think that a lot of valid points have been brought up about comparisons to saosin. I like both bands (apart from saosins last release) and with this album i might like SAW a lot more than saosin.

Lol i cant lie there have been some die hard fans that get butt hurt about only slight criticisms.

This guy totally gets it. The lyrics is supposed to evoke this kind of imagery.

FINALLY got this and I'm lovin it. I think the problem with Furney's lyrics is not so much that they're bad or poorly written so much as they are so metaphorical that they come off as being nonsensical. Maybe it's just me?

I'd definitely have to disagree. Listen to GWW then TF. TF is definitely heavier.

it's cause he gave low scores for Lyrics and Creativity, both of which he criticized in the review.

I agree with both of you, they're not straightforward lyrics. Either they're heavily metaphorical, and/or talking about subjects that are foreign to a lot of us. I'm surprised no one's said it but TF seems to be heavily influenced by Native American motifs. And I can't tell if it just for metaphorical purposes or if it's a more direct type of writing.

This album does sound good. Sound good. The lyrics are kind of weak, but the unique sounds in here really make up for it and makes the album last. I do agree that Charles is a hybrid of Cove and Anthony's voice though. Nice sophmore album
