I've been doing a ton of research as of late into music. I'm pretty disappointed with the current state of music, so digging up the past has been my solution, and it's yielded some great finds, but I figure posing this question might bring me some results.
What album seriously effected you. Changed you. Dented your existence. I understand there are many great albums out there, but what one album are you truly thankful for. I'd appreciate any feedback as I'm looking for some special finds.
Mine is "The Wall"
I recommend to anyone a sit down with the wall when you got a couple hours to yourself. Listen to the lyrics and reflect on the work as a whole. Amazing piece of art.

Obviously there is no "best album ever." Music is subjective. But look at how OP defined the purpose of the thread:
What album seriously effected you. Changed you. Dented your existence. I understand there are many great albums out there, but what one album are you truly thankful for. I'd appreciate any feedback as I'm looking for some special finds.
Therefore, despite the thread's misleading title, if that one kid has really been effected by The Rocket Summer, then I guess that's his "best album"?

I discovered this in high school. I know, that kinda makes it seems that I'm 5 years ahead in life since most people's defining high school album by Brand New would be Your Favorite Weapon or perhaps Deja Entendu, but really nothing speaks to me more than this record at that time. I still learn a lot from it today, even.
Probably the first Thin Lizzy record. When I first heard it I knew I had been altered permanently. As I progressed through their catalog it dawned on me that I was listening to what I considered to be one of the best bands I'd ever heard and will ever get to hear. Also, the first time I heard Elvis Presley, it had the same effect on me. Still absolutely love both artists.

im amazed how some of you guys tend to call totally shitty albums "the best ever"
i can understand that there are great albums that you are really into right now or for some time, but hey, that doesnt mean that its the best album in the whole world or even the best album youve ever heard
i think its pretty safe to name that those albums which youve been listening to for long years, you know every word and note on them, you dream about them and associate yourself with them, you think of certain moments in your life that the cd was with you, its those albums that no matter what are you listening to, hardcore, techno or classical, you still love this one particular album regardless the genre it represents
what im sayin is that i think some of you people overrate and use the word "best" too often
for me this best cd ever would be jacks mannequin everything in transit because its been with me for hell a long time now and basically ive been listening to it over and over again in my car on my ipod at work at school pick ur spot, ive been listnening to it along with shai hulud and with rod stewart, its the album that ive seen in my dreams and hell yeah im gonna show it to my kids
even though id sacrifice my limbs for all the blink records and some other stuff (someone mentioned 5 score & 7 years ago by relient k) i honestly i dont think i could name them as the best albums ive ever heard compared to jacks manneqin
oh my it got complicated
i cant understand what i wrote right now so if u have any questions just go on and ask them :D
I'll just give you my all time top 5.
1. Elliott Smith - Elliott Smith
2. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
3. Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
4. The National - Boxer
5. Something Corporate - North

well actually i think its very simple, at least this is the way i have this thing
basically theres a lot of cds that im stoked about and every now and then there is a cd released which is VERY GOOD and i like it a lot BUT what ive found out over the course of years is that its common that even albums i which i loved for some period of time were forgotten and i never came back to them. thats how i can know this - a good cd for me is a cd thats in your cd player even after 10 years and you still enjoy it and find those little secrets on it.
the bottom line is that i often get hyped about certain cd and although its very solid it doesnt have the value, its just like a one night stand
do you know what i mean?
at least thats how it works for me, maybe other people prefer to have "the best cd ever" each month ;)
Recently, Tegan and Sara's "Sainthood".

Dammit that's hard.
I know that blink 182's enema of the state had a great influence on me. I still listen to pop-punk and that's all because of them. So that's, for me, one of the best albums i've heard.
I do really like punkrock and than I must go with "the gold record" by the bouncing souls.
And I think that Bloc Party's "A Weekend In The City" is the most underrated record of the decade.
But the best?
This one moves me like no other record did:

Amazing piece of art.

i'd have to say these are my favorites (in no particular order):
bright eyes - lifted, or the story is in the soil keep your ear to the ground
anberlin - cities
bayside - bayside
modest mouse - building nothing out of something
the spill canvas - one fell swoop
fall out boy - folie a deux
the killers - sam's town
relient k - mmhmm
punchline - 37 everywhere
new found glory - catalyst
i've also really been into jonny craig's "a dream is a question you don't know how to answer" since it came out, we'll see if it stands the test of time, but i've listened to it more than most of the music i've had for a lot longer.

Okay, but I don't think that you can say that it's without doubt that one of them is the best. They're all amazing albums, and there isn't much between them.
Identity of Crisis by the way.
oh i wasn't trying to insinuate that this was the only good one. i completely agree with that statement, but in my mind, beggars is just that much better than their other albums.

They're a local band who split right on the verge of getting big. If you can find it somewhere, it's the best full-band pop record I've ever heard. If you can't find it anywhere I'd upload it and PM you if you're interested.

The other 3 complely changed the way I listen to music. But if I were to try and rank more objectively, those two Springsteen albums are probably the greatest albums ever made. But it's a favorite list, not best.
Also, if you want to hear #3, let me know and I'll send you it in a PM.

Yeah, I have albums I've listened to more and loved for a longer period of time than Born to Run, but for me it's the greatest album ever recorded. My 2 all time favorite songs bookend it, and everything in between is perfect. I love The Wild, The Innocent as well (side 2 is just ridiculous) but I'm not sure where it would rank in the Springsteen catalog for me. The first 7 or 8 albums would probably make my all time top 50 though.
And I'd definitely be interested in hearing #3.

I'd like to hear that Averi album, if it's not too much of a hassle for you to upload it.
As for me,
http://broccolicity.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/michae_jackson_thriller_album_cover .jpg
Surprised this hasn't been said much yet. This album made me realize pop can be very, very, very good.
http://prospectdesigns.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/Lydia_Illuminate.jpg
This album signified me dipping my toes into the water of the more 'indie' genre; lighter, more ambient music. They're responsible for me delving into bands like Copeland, Bright Eyes, etc.
http://images.uulyrics.com/cover/m/motion-city-soundtrack/album-i-am-the-movie.jpg
This album just kicked my ass the first time I heard it. I Am The Movie was unlike any music I'd ever heard before. I'd never heard music not played on the radio to this point. I singlehandedly give this album responsibility for me even daring to touch the types of music on this site today. MCS will more than likely stay my favorite band for a long while.
http://www.playmusic.it/musica/wp-content/uploads/incubus-morning-view.jpg
I simply just love this album. It's the best album by who I believe are five of the most talented musicians around. Incubus is amazing, and this album is a classic.
If I had to lean more towards classic stuff, however, Billy Joel's Turnstiles and Elton John's Don't Shoot Me, I'm Just The Piano Player would definitely be on here. As a piano player, I have to pay both of them respect. However, the four albums above have affected me like no others.
