I'm in a pop/rock band and we believe we finally have some pretty good stuff, music that we're proud of.
Basically, i want to know if it's worth the extra money to record with a decent producer/studio or if we should
record the cheap way with good software on a mac. We would be recording in Earthsound studios, valdasta. He's recorded
Mayday Parade's first album, Stages and stereos, and a couple of other decent bands.
Thoughts?

how long have you been a band? would this be your band's record?
honestly, you can do great sounding recordings on your own.
my band (www.myspace.com/theglassgentlemen) recorded all our stuff in my bedroom with my shitty equipment, and i think it sounds pretty decent for our first album.

yeah, it'd be for our 7 song EP. I joined the band july last year, they recorded 3 songs to put up on the Myspace before i had joined as the new singer.
Do you think this type of recording quality would be okay?

in my opinion, i wouldn't blow money on a studio if you already have stuff to do a decent recording yourselves. unless you are loaded and can afford going into a legit studio with a producer... in that case, i'd do it. haha

Well, for Earthsound (i don't know if you've heard of them) it'd cost about $2500....

to ME, that would be COOL to do a recording with them, however, i don't think i actually would until you can all really afford it. do a home recording, and save that money to professionally print and duplicate the CD. that's what i would do.

I say do what you feel like. If you think you can make back the 2500 or you just have that much around to blow for some reason, go for it. Why NOT! If that is a stretch for you though I don't see why you would.
PS you might think about recording it all yourself either way. You learn a lot about some songs DURING the recording process, not beforehand, so that's why a lot of bands do "pre-production" or record demos before they ever go into the studio. You can reveal and fix a lot of arrangement problems without wasting the time in the studio. Studio time should be treated like a ninja operation. Get in, nail the parts, and get out. Time is money. The more you screw up in there the more money you waste.

The only thing with that is, who is going to buy a local band's cd twice, no matter how much better the quality is?

Yeah, we're recording a demo reguardless, just so we have something to take with us if we DO decide to get it redone professionally.

i'm not saying to record it at home first and then re-record it with a pro studio. i'm saying maybe record at home and then sell those at shows, get a bigger following, make money, and then record your next album in a pro-studio. i dunno, i'm just throwing ideas out there. haha
but i agree with what the other dude said. if you have the money to blow, or you think you can make it all back, do it at a studio. it'd be a cool experience.

ahhh alright. Well we did sell a little 3 track package a while back, and have been playing for almost 2 years locally, so it's probably time we release a professionally done album...haha

if you can afford it, go for it. have you looked into getting the finished product printed and duplicated? that stuff can be costly, as well.
i did a little basic research for you. for 1,000 CDs in jewel cases with a 4-panel insert, it'll be about $990 total. this website (http://www.discmakers.com) is easy to play around with different packages/quotes.

yeaaah... its expensive. unless you plan on promoting this album for a while, you probably dont need quite 1,000 CDs. haha

definitely. that's what i would do, as well. for 500, i think its like only 200 dollars less than getting 1,000 though. but if you spend all that, you'll have so many copies of your CD laying around the rest of your life. hahaha jk

Hey just wanted to throw out don't forget the following potential costs when you're thinking about recording:
Mixing
Mastering
Album art / design
Duplication
Promotion
Related Merch
Also I want to shout out for cdpostershop.com. They have better prices than discmakers.com if you plan to make less than 1000 records.
