I will once again be sitting down with Vinnie Fiorello of Less Than Jake (http://www.lessthanjake.com) for an informative, tell-all interview. If you have any questions surrounding the band, Fueled By Ramen, or Vinnie's toy company Wunderland War, please leave them in the replies and I will do my best to get them answered for you.

why do you use less horns on your records these days? would you say it is because your sound has evolved away from them?

Why do you hate on bands way better than you?

Am I missing something here? I'm afraid I don't quite understand this comment, nor Jared's "Every Time I Die" response? Just curious.

What are his uncensored thoughts on some of the bands on his label: CiWWAF, P!, Paramore, etc.

yeah ask them why they said Everytime i die should sound more like them

I think its because they were trying to ride on Fat Mikes Coatails on talking shit about people.
and it backfired
because they didnt think Keith would actually burn them back hard

LTJ tried to burn ETID, but failed.

I will ask a question surrounding this statement, but this is the first I have heard of it. Can someone please give me the full story regarding this incident. At least then I'll be able to understand exactly what I'm asking.

apparently the night before, they played in buffalo - which is ETID's hometown, and LTJ was next up on the main stage after etid and ltj said that they didnt like them because they didnt sing like LTJ did. they were upset cause they made fun of them in front of friends and family... so keith said, during their set yesterday, that he was happy they didnt sound like them because then they would be a washed-up ska band too. haha.

Unfortunately, our search feature is down, so I am unable to find the article you're referring to. However, let it be known that the only music I am interested in is the genre in which I cover, so I don't often read too far into statements surroundig music I don't care for. In this case, Every Time I Die.

LTJ hated on my chemical romance at the dc date of their last tour, I thought it was kinda fucked up, but whatever.

Some questions I got.

You guys seem to play alot of your old stuff at shows, do you think your old stuff is better than your new stuff, or just that its better crowd pleasers?
how do you feel about bands signed to your label(s) getting huge (panic, FOB, Academy Is, ect...)
Do you think of yourself as a drummer or a lyrisist first?
Do you guys even consider yourself a punk/ska band anymore?

I heard it was just a joket that ETID took seriously.

But ask him how he deciedes to have a band on his label.

Also ask how bands choose where they play. I've always wondered because 90% of the bands I like play shows in Charlotte but not Raleigh even though the areas are roughly the same size.

Charlotte Metro area is over 2 million people. It pulls from South Carolina and all of North Carolina. Raleigh/Durham is about half that size and doesn't pull from other areas like Charlotte does. Besides, Chapel Hill is 30 minutes away and it seems like a lot of FBR bands play Cat's Cradle. I think also that Charlotte is simply positioned better along I-77 and I-85. A band can play Atlanta, Charlotte and then DC with minimal turning.

When I said Raleigh I meant more of the Triangle area. And LTJ played there once literally a week before my friend bought me the first album I heard from them. I was rather bumed because I thought and still do they are the shit.

what he said. i'm from columbia, sc and i go to charlotte for shows 10 times more than i stay in columbia for shows. its easy for everyone to get to.

in other news, i'm interested in a couple things...
- where does vinnie get his inspiration for wunderland war/mvsr?
- what process does the band go through when choosing setlists with such a large discography?

...thats probably all for now.

I'm curious as to what he thinks of LTJ's current label, Sire, and their lack of promotion on the new album. Do you think it'd be easier self-promoting on FBR instead or would you like to separate LTJ from FBR as not to seem like an "ego". I just think Sire treats LTJ like shit and something smaller would suit them better, like FBR.

1. I heard a while back that LTJ was gonna release a live cd and dvd. Is this still in the works?

2. How soon are they gonna get back in the studio. I want as much LTJ that i can get my hands on.

Thats about it for now.

The first time I saw Fall Out Boy play was in the summer of 03 when they were opening for LTJ and were on vinnie's label, Fueled by Ramen. What has it been like for him to see a band that he had seen the potential in long ago blow up to the size it is today?

im begging you can you please ask him why they are not coming to "South Australia" when they tour Australia in November, they sold out last year when they came to "South Australia" and there crossing from one side of the country to the other but not stopping buy in the middle (South Aus), and are they doing that tour with a wilhelm scream, I will love you if you could please ask that, thanks

Everyone needs to stop hating on LTJ. They are good guys who make fun music. They don't take anything they say seriously so why should anyone else?

Brandon, ask Vinnie why the name change to Wunderland, it all happened in like one day without any prior notice

i was looking for the monkeyvsrobot page one day and i couldnt find anything on why it just disappeared

maybe its somewhere on pickyourposions.com on his older entries, i dunno, but ask him if he hasnt posted it anywhere

about the name change, there was a children's book already of the same name, so instead of having to pay whatever fees etc to keep the name, it was easier to just change it.

Why didn't you write all the songs on the new album yourself instead of relying on professional hit writers to write songs like "Soundtrack Of My Life" (written by Shelly Peiken [Christina Aguileras hit writer]) or "Overrated" (written by Holly Knight [Tina Turner])?

Source? I'm pretty sure Vinnie writes all of the lyrics to their songs.

I think he meant about the music itself, not the lyrics.

Just a sec, ill try to find it, its been long ago since I saw it somewhere (i remember it was quite a reliable source, or seemed like it at least.. on some review i think), but its stuck with me ever since.

And yeah, i meant the music

http://www.hollyknight.com/sound.html <- overrated on her official homepage and..

http://www.peermusic.com/artistpage/Shelly_Peiken.html <- here, though it does not refer directly into the song titles, but a comment on http://www.punknews.org/review/5308 says that. Also says that Mark Hoppus wrote "The Rest Of My Life".

If you go on http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:1yd8vwxta9ik you can see "performed songs by" as well. I consider all of this pretty reliable given the amount of links you can find if you just google "shelly peiken less than jake".

* Why did you feel the need to use professional songwriters on the album, when you haven't on previous albums? Was there any label pressure?
* Do the record company decide the singles or LTJ? I ask because the singles are generally very different from what's on their records (look at "She's Gonna Break Soon").
* Did many people phone you on your warped tour cell-phone number?
* Do you think that their live performances will change much with the new material which doesn't rely on horns as much? Are you going to avoid playing certain songs that may not work so well live?
* The b-sides are very well regarded, particularly Only Human - was there any reason why they didn't make the cut for the album?
* Do you like "She's Gonna Break Soon"? 'cause nobody else does...

ask Vinnie to ask Roger about the current state of Rehasher?

I know Geis is in Bullets To Broadway (I think?) and Roger is always busy with LTJ, but I want another god damn Rehasher record

Rehasher is fucking awesome.

There was a Rehasher performance in London earlier this year when Bullets to Broadway supported LTJ on tour, that's all I know.

Less Than Jake is one of my top three favourite bands, yet I can't think of a really good question for them, besides asking to confim rumours that are some of those "I heard through a friend of a friend" things that have no validity.

So ask him why Chris didn't participate on any of the commentaries on The People's History of Less Than Jake?
