View Full Version : Protien bars, pouder, etc?

Well since ive seen threads kinda like this posted in here before, i thought id ask this. Im in a dilema, i dont know if its ok to eat protien bars, ya know the ones that are kinda like candy bars, or if i should just buy the big protien pouder stuff again. I work out 5 days outta the week for alomst 2 hours every time. I have 8% body fat, i weigh about 170 and im like 5 ft. 6in. I wanna know which protien i should take?

I used to drink the powder stuff and i didn't even get a six pac. you have to work out and shit

I used to be extremely serious about working out. I would drink whey protein and take creatine all the time... I got bigger than I ever imagined and loved it.

Then, I got ultra lazy and stopped for a while... but finally got back into it early this summer. I didnt bother with either supplement and just ate a lot of eggs. I saw very little gain and was pretty disgusted.

I started back up on both 3 weeks ago and I've seen huge improvements. Before that little experiment I was never sure just how much I owed to protein shakes. Now I know: A LOT. I highly recommend whey, it's heaven sent. So far I haven't been able to isolate whether or not the creatine is helping me, but in powder form its ultra-cheap and can't hurt.

Power bars are pretty good, but you have to know that there are different types of protein; whey, as used in shakes, is very fast acting. It gets to your muscles faster than anything else and promotes growth more heavily.

Protein bars have very little protein compared to shakes, if you're serious you should take in one gram for every pound you weigh per day. A power bar I had today had only 10 grams. Barely anything. There is also a lot of sugar and useless carbs in these protein bars; not what somebody aiming to build a lot of muscle, and probably get in great shape, needs... although if you're working out and trying to get big calories are more a friend than enemy.

Make sure you have a very high protein diet at all times, but specifically moreso right after working out so it can get to work repairing.

If you work out that much then having a little protien after can't hurt. Balance gold bars I find to be pretty tasty.

Glad to help, my moms an aerobics instructor and really into nutrition, and I've been into working out for a while. Nice to share what I've learned.

Should you still comsume a lot of protien if your trying to drop weight?

I'd say get as much protein as possible, but work it into your regular calorie intake rather than as a supplement. Ie: replace a high carb breakfast of cereal or whatever with salmon or eggs.

Whey protein shakes make good snacks and if I were trying to lose weight I could easily substitute one for lunch; they fill you up like crazy and are the best thing for muscle gain.

I have a general question

I stopped working out after baseball last year in high school but i run about once a week. i want to run once a day as well as lift but obviously do legs one day and arms the next. any help is appreciated

Stay away from bars. 99.9% of them are fucking shit. And don't make powder your main source of protein.

There is a time and place for powder. The majority of your caloric intake should be whole foods. Whole foods > supplements.

1. on the go meal
2. Post work out with fast digesting carbs like maltodextrin and dextrose.
3. morning.


Point being, with the exception of caesin protein.... protein powder is fast digesting. Mornings and post workouts are the only time of the day you really need fast digesting food.

Is it bad to run then lift or lift then run? I was told that if you lift and then run, the running burns your muscle so basically nothing is accomplished. I stopped working out after baseball last year in high school but i run about once a week. i want to run once a day as well as lift but obviously do legs one day and arms the next. any help is appreciated

If you run before you lift, you waste energy you could be using to lift heavier weights.

After lifting for 45 minutes your body releases a hormone called Cortisol that is catabolic, meaning it eats muscle. Running is extremely catabolic post-lift.

You're best off running on days you aren't going to be in the gym.

Do a 3 day split
mon - chest/bi's
tues - run
wed - tri's/back
thurs - run
fri - legs/shoulders
sat - run

Do short runs too... like 20 minutes worth of say interval sprints or wind sprints and what not. They burn more fan than long distance runs and retain more muscle mass.

A good example is.... look at a cross country runner
they're all skinny lanky fucks...

look at a sprinter
they're usually lean and ripped.

No matter if you're a girl or boy. Protein is key. You body NEEDS it, especially if you're doing physical activity.

yeah.

I eat 6 meals a day even while cutting

the difference for me between cutting in bulking is while cutting

I taper carbs off later in the day

usually the first 3 meals are all complex carbs
4th meal is post workout so i take a fast digesting carb like dextrose

then some veggies or no carbs for my last two

thanks a lot, it helps a lot. what do you think about push ups and sit ups after running? should that be an every day thing or just every few days. should the push ups be incorporated with the friday session of shoulders?

i take whey protein and the mass cycle from gnc, and i've gained 15 pounds over the last 2 months or so. i'm happy with it.

Push ups are pretty much useless for gaining muscle unless you start doing weighted push ups, etc..

there are far better ways to build your chest.

and depending on how fast your body recovers I would only do the same muscle every 6-7 days.

I'm really into running too, and I don't care too much about getting huge. When I run I make sure it's after working out so that I had as much energy working out as possible, and try to make sure I get more protein to make up for the calories I burned running.

My mom avoids protein shakes. She works out and excersizes a lot, but she wants to stay more skinny and lean. She doesn't want to bulk up a lot and more protein would influence that. But then again, she gains muscle extremely easily, even without protein.

It's impossible for a female to "bulk up" to the degree most girls are worried about. It KILLS me when a girl is like "I don't want to lift weights b/c i dont want to get "that big" " Women simply don't have enough testosterone in their body to warrant any significant muscle gains.

And as long as your caloric intake is in check, you can injest as much protein as you want and still not gain weight.

You need, need, need the right amount of protein in your body. Regardless of goals.

Not having enough can be very counterproductive with whatever you're trying to achieve.

Working out whether it be running or lifting(it should be both btw) makes your body need it even more.

The suggested daily value for protein intake a day is .36 grams per lb of body weight. If you're an active person this is ridiculously low.

It hasn't actually helped me gain muscle, but my body recovers faster when I use it. I use it as my supplement during frisbee, and I used it with my summer job...instead of being so tired in the morning, it gave my muscle much faster recovery time. Can't say I noticed a muscle growth from it...I don't think so really though.

Yes and no...I also work out on top of frisbee...and I spent my summer working construction, so I was using any advantage I could to regain each day so I wasn't tired going into the next.

I used creatine because my brother had it leftover, though probably straight protein would have been much more effective really...but, it worked well enough.

Actually, creatine is the primary source of energy your muscles use for quick bursts of energy. Atleast if I remember correctly. I did hear something about water, too.

The benefit of creatine is more energy for better sets, or for sprinting, or whatever.

Right, and part of the energy comes from cell volumization from the water. The bodies main source of energy for muscles is called adenosine-triphosphate... creatine basically does it's own thing and also allows for more supply of atp to be released.. i think its originally only like a 9 or 10 second energy store.

and to whoever said

your body produces about a gram of it per day
