View Full Version : Old, nostalgic bastard rant...

This is somewhat off-topic, but I really miss the days of Mineral/Saetia/Knapsack/Braid (and Hey Mercedes' first EP, which was tight)/American Football/Sunny Day Real Estate/Christie Front Drive/Mock Orange/Boys Life/You and I/No Knife/early Appleseed Cast/Jejune et al. I've been listening to this stuff non-stop, trying to re-live the late-90's/early-00's. Music, for me, peaked in that time frame. Pretty sad, really. I'm going to start a movement to re-commence ripping-off all those bands.

I miss those days too... I thrashed that shit hard.... while I'm not gonna say everything today sucks, it does seem like there's a lot less quality bands pushing things in interesting directions than there once was.
Perhaps I'm just not looking hard enough

Someone busting out old Deep Elm and Crank compilations?

Yeah, that was definitely the peak for emo/indie.
Too many bands these days have let this pop-punk/trash/whatever scene into their influence.

Meh. I could do without midwest style emo. I prefer me some of that Orchid, Ampere, Envy, Raein stuff.
I'm just weird I guess :shrugs:

well, not pop-punk in general persay, just the modern brand of it that includes overdramatic lyrics and random gargling.

I still don't think things have peaked.

well, i mean, there's a lot of stuff that I listen to that falls in the emo category that nobody ever seems to talk about on this board like gospel that makes me think that there's still a lot of innovation still happening.
and there's been some really solid releases this year too.

yeah, such as.... ENVY :freakout:
I'll have to check out Gospel. What are some other good emo releases this year? I've actually been pretty lazy on recent releases in this little (massive multinational) genre.

oh yeah, definitely check out gospel.
as for releases this year: envy's ruled, amanda woodward put out something that I really liked, i think it was a 7inch, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You's "Believes in Patterns" is one of my favorite cds in the genre ever and I'm sure there's more if I thought about it like Pyramid's cd.

I've never downloaded The Moon is a Dead World, even though I always mean to check Gospel out.

it's good. I think they have a lot of potential to be something great.

i just hope for more envy-esque bands to come out. post-rock and emo just happen to be my two favorite genres ever.

Cursive just put out Happy Hollow and they're pretty old school emo. I mean this album isn't as amazing as Ugly Organ, but it's still great stuff.
Another big release I'm looking forward to this year is mewithoutYou.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that the so called "emo" movement is dead...it's just filled with unoriginal crap because it has reached such high popularity(unfortunately).
