View Full Version : Favorite female musicians?

This music forum is really male dominated because well...the music industry is male dominated. But the girls need love too! Who are some of your favorite female musicians?

My favorites include in no particular order:
Tegan and Sara, Annie Clark/St. Vincent, Regina Spektor, Holly Miranda, Kate Cooper from An Horse (and Iron On), Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Shinghai Shoniwa from the Noisettes, and Sherri, Chauntelle, and Stacey from Eisley.

i go through phases like that. i feel like they're usually tied to the weather. i also did a science project in like 10th grade about vocal biorhythms, and i actually found that your vocal range fluctuates over a period of two to three weeks. it's hard to be consistent as a singer, believe me i understand that.

While you have a point about music, historically, being male dominated. I think we're looong past the point of there only being a handful of great female artists. A short list is no longer relevant. Even in just the past couple years, many females have been creating some of my favourite albums. Hell, even in the first few months of this year I've loved:

Corinne Bailey Rae - The Sea
Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh
Hollie Smith - Humour & the Misfortune of Others
Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me
Dessa - A Badly Broken Code

Outstanding music.

Well, I guess I'm just being a normal human being in that case. I was actually just doing a song for fun and I didn't even get 1/4 through it without messing up. It's actually kind of funny when I play it back, though.

Absolutely. The new Bailey Rae is undoubtedly a modern classic already, it's just gorgeous. If you were a fan of Badu's last one, Part 2 will go down well, although it's much more mellow, lush, rich, delicious, a real grower. I say this every time she released an album haha, but it's her best work yet. Hollie Smith is perhaps the most unknown to people here, but she's a soul voice with a modern take on roots, another incredible talent, there's a couple tunes from the new album on her myspace (http://www.myspace.com/holliesmithmusic).

Good on ya for giving her a listen mate. Hollie is one of my favourites, I just love her music & her music ideologies. So rich & colourful, yet so pure & organic, a tribute to the past, yet an exploration of the uncharted future. A blend of jazz, roots, hip-hop, reggae, soul, a cup always half full.

Based on that, I'd say you will love The Sea, by Corinne Bailey Rae. But if you haven't listened to Badu before, it might be a whole new adventure haha, she's often dubbed the "Bjork of hip-hop".

I love that attitude of yours, that thirst for adventures through the musical realm. Because you never know what you might discover if you never seek...

Hope you find something you enjoy mate. Have you ever heard of Bic Runga? If not, I think she might just become a huge hit with you, based on the little I know about your musical interests. Her album Beautiful Collisions is my favourite & features great songs like these: (note - these 3 songs, of which I am a huge fan of, aren't even my favourites on the album, just the first three I could find videos for, that's how good this album is haha)

Oh yeah, there are tons of amazing female artists. It's just, sometimes at least to me, it seems like they do not get as much attention, unless they are a pop or R&B singer. I dunno, lately I've been trying to listen to more and more female musicians and already in this thread I've come across a ton of people I've either never heard of or haven't really tried listening to. Also Dessa is amazing! I am proud to say that we are from the same city. :)

Iunno, I'm not a girl nor have I discussed it with girls.
However I'd think it would be a stronger attraction with women because of how few women musicians there are.
Or I could be wrong, iunno. I never thought about guys in bands being more attractive before.

That was more of a rhetorical question haha. In my experience, people talented in something (art, music/instrument, sport) are generally regarded as more attractive, due to that aspect alone. Doesn't matter if it's a guy in a band or a girl in a band.

A genre is a category of music where a series of specific guidelines are set. In avant-garde, the whole point is, informally, to make extremely transcendent music. Granted, avant-garde can refer to John Zorn as easily as Unexpect. However, many avant-garde subgenres have been formed over the years. Avant-garde jazz would apply to the former, as avant-garde metal would apply to the latter.

That's a superfluous modifier. There is music that does challenge conventions; that is avant-garde, but it isn't a genre.

Blues is a genre of music that is entirely avant-garde - born with elements of gospel, slavery hymns, folk and a distinct, voodoo-influenced, southern epistemological base, it was incredibly subversive and challenged lyrical and sonic boundaries. We don't call blues Avant-garde Blues. I mean, avant-garde art was born from challenging modernity. It simply can't be limited to genre modifier. Music can certainly be subversive and avant-garde, but it still operates under something, it doesn't come from a vacuum and it's really an exercise in semantics to apply "avant-garde Jazz," which is what things like Fusion would be. Fusion would be Avant-garde Jazz, yet calling it that doesn't really reveal much other than it features a conventionally-seditious aesthetic.

And until we put a rather unnecessary genre-tag on avant-garde jazz, that is what it is. By your standards all pop-punk is punk or pop. All metalcore is either metal or hardcore, etc. Based on your theory, genres are nonexistent, useless, and cannot be created. Music is music. The last part I can agree with, but obviously genres are created, and the more experimental ones are often fitted into avant-garde music, a fitting tag.

Pop nor Punk has roots to a philosophical movement that opposed modernity. So, no, that isn't "my theory." Genres are tenuous, yet distinction does serve a purpose simply by utility (it can steer people toward [x] or allow us to honor distinctions). Avant-garde art transcends genre and can work within any of them, but operating under "challenging music," saying "avant-garde Jazz" wouldn't make much sense from a utilitarian standpoint, given Hard-Bop was Avant-garde, Fusion was Avant-garde. Again, Blues itself is Avant-garde. It's not practical and doesn't work as a genre.

People will always create genres for things to classify it. Rather than saying weird or experimental music, we say avant-garde until we can properly calssify it, which is why it's a transitional genre. We both seem to agree that all genres at any point were "avant-garde", but if we are going to title music by genres, then why not go all the way? Rather than saying, weird, many say avant-garde, and since it has been used so many times, and so many people see it as experimentally progressive music, we use it as a genre. Granted it's not the strongest argument, but it seems your playing the devil here.

You've just created an arbitrary timeframe in which we call something "avant-garde [genre]" before giving it a formal title. This proves my point. Fusion was an avant-garde form of Jazz. Claiming Avant-garde is a music genre is silly. There's a lot of art in every form of media that's avant-garde, yet it isn't a genre.

which is why it's a transitional genre.

That's a very limiting use of such a complex artistic and philosophical concept.

No one uses it as a genre because it says nothing other than a superficial claim that it's "different."

You can't classify something as "weird" though, because "weird" has a relative definition, subjective to whomever is perceiving the weirdness. If you're using "avant-garde" as a poncy synonym for "weird", it's like trying to call "sad" or "happy" music a genre. You can't do that, because there's nothing but perception that makes those things a component of any music.
