"A plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski has crashed near a Russian airport, officials say.
Russian media reported that 87 people were killed in the crash near Smolensk, and a regional governor was quoted as saying there were no survivors.
Polish officials said Mr Kaczynski was on board along with his wife Maria and several senior government figures.
They were in Russia to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, when the Soviets killed thousands of Poles.
The Russian emergencies ministry told Itar-Tass news agency the plane crashed at 1056 Moscow time (0656 GMT).
Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said it had been flying from Moscow to Smolensk, but had no details on the identities of those killed.
Smolensk regional governor Sergei Antufiev told Russian TV that no one had survived. "As it was preparing for landing, the Polish president's aircraft did not make it to the landing strip," he said. "According to preliminary reports, it got caught up in the tops of trees, fell to the ground and broke up into pieces. There are no survivors in that crash. We are clarifying how many people there were in the [Polish] delegation. According to preliminary reports, 85 members of the delegation and the crew."
The BBC's Adam Easton in Warsaw says the president was flying in a Tupolev 154, a plane that was designed in the 1960s and capable of carrying more than 100 passengers.
The Polish Foreign Ministry said the president and his wife were aboard the plane. Central bank governor Slawomir Skrzypek was also said to have been on board.
Mr Kaczynski has been a controversial figure in Polish politics, advocating a right-wing Catholic agenda. He has opposed rapid free-market reforms and favoured retaining social welfare programmes."

Don't think the Russians have anything to do with it, they showed on CNN the footage and the overall condition of the area where the plan crashed, visibility was almost 0 because of the thick fog, they say the plane must have hit some trees then crashed.

From the timesonline.uk article, i found this to be the most interesting piece
The president’s identical twin — and political ally — Jaroslaw Kaczynski was not on the flight.
I mean, think of all the possibilities.

Right now it seems as if the dense fog is to blame. I saw some anonymous sources quoted as saying that "nobody should have landed in that fog", but you bet your ass they'll be a full blown investigation in the coming months.

I doubt it. Anyone here ever read Confessions of an Economic Hitman? When these leaders don't cooperate, they often end up "dying in a plane crash".

Conspiracy theories are for paranoid people with too much time on their hands. There's no logical reason to believe so many people can keep giant, world-involving secrets. Just don't have that much faith in people.

President Bush, in his infinite wisdom, orchestrated what can only rightly be considered as the world's most intricate and successful undercover plot to line the pockets of himself, and hundreds of other powerful figureheads. Duh!

I think it is fairly obvious that the Russians made this plane go down.
C'mon the President of Poland and nearly all of the political/military elite on one plane? And it crashes while they are attending a remembrance of Polish political/military elite who were murdered by Russians in WWII?

Why does everyone always assume that conspirators will leave symbolic clues so they can be caught? No point covering everything up if you're going to make it easy to be uncovered.
Of course, you have to believe in conspiracy theories, which makes you retarded, so I guess the other stuff makes sense, too.

I define a 'conspiracy theory' as one that takes unimaginable leaps of logic and rationality. I don't consider someone saying Bush was involved in 9/11 to be a 'conspiracy theory' (I may not agree with them, but they at least seek that which is possible). I consider someone saying that every floor of the WTC was lined with explosives and flammable paint to be a conspiracy theory.

In this case, it probably isn't. I wouldn't put anything past Putin either, but Kacsynski apparently had a history of talking shit to pilots: BBC reports that he threatened a pilot with some vague repercussions when the pilot refused to land the plane in Tbilisi in horrible weather several years ago. In this case they were somewhat in a rush to get there for the ceremony too. As well, the plane they were flying in is shit. I don't even begin to complrehend why a head of state with pretty much his entire cabinet would choose to travel in a rust-bucket of such poor safety record and a horrible history of crashes. Wasn't there a better choice? *I* wouldn't be caught boarding one of those. Those Tupolevs are well past the age of retirement.

What are you going for here? Are you knocking conspiracy theories or championing one? You really need to hammer down the 'clarity' before you branch out into sarcasm.

As much as I'd love to pin it on Putin, I have to agree. Too many other variables point to this being a freak accident.

Sure, but I too love a cleverly spun conspiracy theory, in the same way I can read magical realism and not worry about whether it is all real.

i agree but i think it was the EU. Since he was against the IMF bailouts and the eu agenda and was going to speak to the eu about it the day after he died.
