So now that Chad is back to doing this, or so it seems, are we still going to try and do this?

Certainly. Please do. In fact, you can develop it into something even bigger than it was before. If you want to split it up and have just a games related roundup, that is a possibility. You have freedom to expand all that you want.

Cody, do you want to do your own section? Since I'm only doing electronics, and then you and Ronnie can split up computer and internet.

Yeah, I was hoping to get one of those two to myself. What exactly signifies the difference between those two, however? I could see them merging quite a bit.

yea they probably would overlap a lot, i guess computer is more general stuff about computers and internet would be stuff about Google, facebook, etc.

I wonder if it would just make more sense for me and Ronnie (username?) to just stay as a team then.

I've actually thought for a while that the games round-up should be split off. I always found myself trying to force a lot of information into a small space, and I think a lot of people wanted to see a games round-up but never thought to look in the Technology Round-up

You got it, klawansie7 (sorry, I haven't had a chance to learn everyone's names).

I'll be glad to help you all out in whatever capacity you desire. Going through the news takes as much if not more time than writing the round-up. The feeds I followed post over 300 posts a day, and that's where I found myself falling behind.

Just let me know how I can help!

Thanks to you all for having such enthusiasm.

What feeds do you normally go through daily?

EDIT: Also, how exactly do I go about posting all my findings for one week? Do I just post them all in my blog on Saturday morning/afternoon?

This is great you guys! I think were going to be able to get a great tech section going. Splitting Apple between 3 people might make for a difficult venture, so Ben, or Lauren, if you're not too sure about doing this, let me know, as I'd really love to help out, otherwise I'll step down for now, because I don't want to step on your guys toes! Or maybe we can figure out a way of switching up? Like month to month, or what not. What do you think?

For technology news specifically, I go through all the following feeds:

bit-tech.net
AppleInsider
Ars Technica
CNET News
Download Squad
Engadget
Extremetech
Gizmodo
Hack In The box
HardOCP
Lifehacker
New Scientist
Redmond Pie
Slashdot
Xbit Labs

For now, I think everyone is just kind of experimenting with ideas of how to proceed with the round-up. I dropped the ball the last couple months, so I understand the staff wanting to go another way than just my writing it.

Honestly, I would be happy to continue writing it with people contributing the news. For instance, if everyone took one or two news feeds (I could divide them up so that everyone has a relatively equal share) and sent the interesting links each week, then I wouldn't have to worry about falling behind on news and could focus on writing and editing. The biggest problem I had was missing a couple days of news then having to go back through hundreds of articles with an approaching deadline. I always made sure that I at least glanced at previews for every article from the aforementioned feeds.

Yes, please start a blog and post your links in your blog. After you have done that, post a link to your blog in this thread and I will take a look at it and give suggestions. At the end of the week, you will send the link to your blog to whomever is putting the whole thing together and they can easily copy and paste from your blog into the final product.

I think we'll need to redo the sectional assignments and get everything straightened out. We should set some guidelines on what each section will cover, so that no one is stepping over someone else.

I'm willing to do whatever section needs work.

The sectional assignments I mean...

I'm not sure exactly what sections I'm supposed to do and what the section entails. I am under Miscellaneous, but I have no idea exactly what that section should be.

I think we should re-assign sections and state exactly what information should be found.

As I said, I'd be glad to help in whatever way I can. Are the section assignments all squared away at this point?

I still think it would be more efficient and effective to divide the workload by the sites watched rather than trying to have people cover specific sections. If everyone took specific feeds, they could place the news they found in the appropriate categories. Otherwise, everyone is going over the same news and doing far more work than they need to while also risking missing news because they think someone else will cover it in their section.

The problem with the categories is everything overlaps in the technical world. For instance, the redsn0w jailbreak news in the most recent round-up could fit in Apple (since it only applies to Apple products), Computer (since it's computer software to hack the iPhone/iPod Touch), or Miscellaneous.

EDIT: Here is a listing of all the feeds I used in compiling the round-up. For simplicity's sake, I told Google Reader to mark all articles over one week as read, so this is just the articles published on these sites within the past seven days:

bit-tech.net (37)
AppleInsider (47)
Ars Technica (106)
CNET News.com (211)
Download Squad (70)
Engadget (219)
Extremetech (14)
Gizmodo (235)
Hack In The Box (61)
[H]ardOCP News/Articles (129)
Lifehacker (125)
New Scientist - Tech (14)
Redmond Pie (34)
Slashdot (159)
X-bit labs (24)

Here is a possible way to divide the feeds:
-CNET
-Engadget
-Gizmodo
-Slashdot
-bit-tech, AppleInsider, Ars Technica
-Download Squad, Extremetech, Hack In The Box
-[H]ardOCP News/Articles and New Scientist - Tech
-Lifehacker, Redmond Pie, X-bit labs

Check out my post above (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?p=65936552#post65936 552) (I've edited it about four times) and see if you think it makes sense (assuming the other volunteers are still game).

By splitting the work by feeds, the entire round-up doesn't get held up if one person doesn't submit, like it would if an entire section were not ready.

I think there would be much MORE overlap if we divided it up by feeds, since a lot of places will post the same news. I get that a lot of stuff overlaps, but there would be much less overlap by category than by feed. I get we wouldn't worry about waiting for people to post their news. but seeing as no one is really contributing it's not really a valid argument.

I think there is more chance for overlap, but less chance of news getting missed. With one editor that compiles the individual submissions, finding that overlap shouldn't be too difficult. Dividing the feeds also cuts down on the work that each person has to do individually (which makes it more likely to be completed).

Of course, as you said, it's irrelevant if no one contributes anyway ;-)

i don't think the goal here is cover every single piece of news that comes out over the week. if people want that much news, they can go read their own RSS feeds or something.

also, it seems like there are only 3 people working on this now: me, you and Frank.

That's true. I probably overcovered things in the past.

But as far as the work goes, I really think it's still easier for us (which does sound like three people at this point) to cover different feeds rather than all of us sift through the same feeds looking for specific stuff by category.

But if you guys would rather do it sectionally, we can do that too. I think doing it by section makes for less work in the end with compilation and by feed makes for less work with searching through news.

Sounds good! Do you two want to have a discussion question? I did one each week that was related to news and made a poll for it on the Polls forum, and I think it was pretty effective as a means of getting more people to the round-up and also having a fun discussion on the side that lasts (in my experience) longer than the discussions in the round-ups themselves.

They were done as blogs and then one person puts them all together into one blog and send me a link that that blog. I have not received that link yet. I see that you have yours marked as private still.

Sorry if I did not post the sections in the correct order. I just copied and pasted one blog above the other. It is easiest for me if one person consolidates it and sends it, but it is also really easy to just copy and paste the way that I did this one (as long as you don't mind it being in that order). So, do we want to set a deadline for me (and Deborah) receiving the consolidated one and if that is not received I will come to this thread and copy and paste whatever is supplied here? Sunday night at 9 p.m. west coast time (which is midnight on the east coast)? Does that work? Saturday night? Monday night? Other suggestions?

You have nothing to apologize for! Thanks for posting it.

i think we should say saturday at midnight east cost? that way we could have it up sunday morning?
I was thinking that we have two deadlines -- one for us to get our individual parts completed and the other for it to be compiled and edited. For instance, we all post our parts at, say, 3:00PM on Saturday 3:00PM EST, then it's edited and compiled by midnight EST. That way we will have it up for all of Sunday.

I think having someone edit the final version rather than just copying and pasting it together will make it look a little more polished and will cut out the occasional duplicate articles. I would be glad to volunteer to edit the final piece (I'm a bit of a grammar fiend anyway), and of course I would still post my part individually at 3:00PM Saturday like everyone else.

What do you guys think about that?

I think having someone edit the final version rather than just copying and pasting it together will make it look a little more polished and will cut out the occasional duplicate articles. I would be glad to volunteer to edit the final piece (I'm a bit of a grammar fiend anyway), and of course I would still post my part individually at 3:00PM Saturday like everyone else.

What do you guys think about that?

that works. i definitely like the idea of having it up all sunday, since there's generally less news posted so more people will see it.

That works for me too. I agree about utilizing the weekends for the roundups since there is less news posted then and it stays on the front page longer.

Thanks to Linda who posted the round-up a bit ago.

Sarcasm, any way you could quickly give me a rundown on how to get the the code from blog entries without re-creating the links? I know we kind of went over it before, but I was stuck using the copy and paste method again this week, which I know is more of a pain for Linda. It would be much nicer if I could "quote" the blog entries. I would say that we could post our sections here in the discussion thread, but that would make it kind of difficult to read.

I just copy paste the blog entries directly into the new entry box. It works and you don't have to recreate the links. Does this not work for you? After that, I just send the blog link to Linda and it goes up.

If its easier, I would say we just post them here and you can quote and copy directly from that. I don't mind that.

I just realized I could make it really easy for you two to subscribe to these feeds (if you haven't done so already). I exported my Google Reader feeds and edited the XML file so it's just the tech stuff.

Download the file here (http://deurl.me/1L22X) and import it into whatever RSS reader you use.

me and chad discussed this earlier, the problem with splitting up the roundup by feeds is that so much of the information posted in different feeds is duplicate. so essentially, we'd all be compiling our own roundups... i just don't really think it's the best way to do it.

if you can't get 5 feeds that's cool, you just won't read those. honestly, you're probably not missing too much.

I think it's just one of those weekends. I've actually spent the majority of the past two days in a hospital. I played two tennis matches in the 100+ degree Texas heat and on the last one, ended up cramping to the point that almost every muscle was locked up. Threw up just about everything I tried to put down to refuel myself, then ended up going to the ER for an IV drip and they wanted to keep me there overnight to monitor everything and make sure I didn't do any serious damage. I'm feeling much better now and work is pretty slow, so I should be able to get the rest of the round-up done relatively soon

Alrighty! At least this time you won't have to re-create all the links. Just FYI, the advanced editing features on AP.net don't work on Chrome if you're a Chrome user like me. You'll have to use IE/Firefox. Not sure if Safari works.

I was going to make a thread asking about having a Technology section on the forum and then I saw this... is this where we go now if we have questions regarding technology etc? I admit I've only skimmed through the first and last page so I'm a little confused on the matter. I do like the idea of the Technology round-up (I've already read through the link that's been posted above). However, I would like the idea of having an area where I could ask questions about certain things rather than making a thread in General for example.
