to work? I accepted a summer job that I think I would really like, but I didn't really think about the 40 minutes drive at the time! It's pretty good pay for a student I think (just under 2000 a month) and full time through the 4 month summer (university) break. I have a car and its pretty cheap on gas too. Just seems so far to go 5 times a week!

You have to put in money to make money.
Unless you have THAT kind of job.

i assumed you would say over an hour, 40 minutes isnt bad. luckily im working in my hometown over the university break at the same place i did last summer. 40 hours a week and excellent pay but just not in my specific major. but if i had a job that was relevant to my major the only place for me to go is 40 minutes to stamford or an hour to hartford really and i would do that

meh, it's pretty typical in most places to have a 40 minute commute one way. The pay is good, suck it up and take the job. My commute is about the same as that and it doesn't really bother me. You get used to it after a while, just keep your ipod around so you can kill time with your tunes.

In my hometown you can't even get to a wal-mart without driving 30-40 minutes, so it was fairly typical to work at least that far away. I actually really enjoy a little commute though. It's nice to have that time to yourself before/after work.

If you think about it, if you lived in New York or Chicago or something it would take at LEAST that long to get anywhere even on the subway etc...

I guess I am just used to driving 5 minutes (worked there 3 years)

I have an ipod plug-in in my car, so all good there

It's a recession and you can get a full-time job just for the summer. Good God take it man!

Well in Winnipeg there is an abundance of jobs, I quit my job and dropped off 5 resumes and had 4 interviews in 2 weeks , all pretty good jobs too (the majority were posted specifically for summer uni students though).

My dad travels an hour and twenty minutes there and back. Luckily I only have about 10 minutes but it can reach 30 minutes since I have speedway traffic to worry about.

Same with San Francisco. But salaries are typically higher in our city. And cost of living is a mofo.

Sweet, another Winnipegger. Where's this particular job you were talking about in the OP?

I drop about 45 minutes on a shitty job right now, so go for it. It's not so bad. You get plenty of music listening time.

I live in Hawaii. The island is only about 70 miles long. (I think). It takes me more than 40 minutes to get to school on average because of the unbearable traffic.I live about 16 miles from my school. I would say that you have it bad, but at least you don't have to bring a book to read while the car in front of you seems to only have the functionality to move backwards. And you get paid.

the drive is totally worth it! experience plus good pay! and i promise the drives wont be too bad, just use the time to listen to your favorite albums before and after work. i drove an hour every day last summer to a shitty job and soco for an hour in the morning definitely made it better.
Do it. It's long enough for you to rub one out while driving.

Is your major accounting ?.....if so, the pay would be well worth that drive

40 minutes?
That's nothing. My drive to school is can be over an hour on a bad day and it used to be around 50 minutes (although recently the traffic has been really good and it only takes me 20...)

yes it is, my current internship is only a little bit of accounting, but if i had one that was primarily accounting i would be making the trip every day, although my pay is great at the one i have in my town which is why i went back this summer

I didn't mind the drive but I haated getting off at 11 and making a 45 minute drive through the hood to get home.

I live in new haven and I had an internship in hartford and it was like a 45-55 minute drive everyday and it was definitely worth it. It was during busy season.....all the overtime i could handle.
Both of my jobs have been about 5 minutes from my house, but I'd be willing to drive farther if I really liked my job.

40 minutes smooth driving is nothing...40 minutes of sitting in traffic is f'n torture.
Screw music...audio books, ftw.

Well it will be 40 minutes in the morning (my shift starts a bit earlier than everyone else) because there's not much traffic, but I get off in the middle of rush hour so it will probably hour to an hour and a half home. I already took the jobs, I just wanted your guys opinions btw.

My job is roughly three and a half minutes from my house if there's no traffic. Perfection.

04/14/10, 04:20 AM
I'd be prepared to travel 50 odd miles if need be.
But as I live and work in the same town...
It's not an issue.
Currently I drive just over an hour in the morning, and 45 minutes on the way home (traffic and different route). It's not bad. Bring music. I used to drive over an hour, sometimes 2 or more depending on where my job was that day (photographer), that was a bitch.

40 minutes isn't too too bad, plus you're gonna be making some good money so it cancels out the drive.

40mins isnt really that bad, i travel 45mins each day to work. my last job was an hour and a half commute o public transport so 40mins is a breath of fresh air.

depends on the job. if its something im "passionate" about and wanna do, not just to get money, sure. but i cant see myself driving to a mcdolands in chicago (2 hours drive-ish) just because its the only place that'll hire me at the moment hahaha. too risky. the pay would be gas money anyways HAHA
