View Full Version : Black Tambourine (Official Thread)

It's my first day off in ages so I'll just keep creating threads only 5 people will care about. Led by vocalist Pam Berry, Black Tambourine is a noise-pop outfit from the early 90s that dabbled in dreamy melodies, effectively influencing the shoegaze movement while maintaining a relatively distinct sound of their own. Wistful melodies float in suspended animation amidst towering walls of fuzzy feedback. It's delightful. They only properly released two EPs (By Tomorrow and Throw Aggi Off The Bridge) before disbanding so Complete Recordings -- which groups BT's collective output -- may be the best release to pick up. Discuss, discover, whatever.

Well, if Complete Recordings is, indeed, their complete recordings, then yeah, I suppose it probably would be the best release to pick up, wouldn't it? Regardless, I like this. I'll have to add this to my ever-growing list of albums to check out.

(Oh, and am I one of the five people you had in mind? Am I? I hope I am.)

This is completely decent. I'll have to dl it somewhere.

You'd think it would be obvious, but the tracklist of Complete Recordings isn't merely the two EPs stacked on top of each other. The songs are jumbled here and there so it's a matter of preference and if one would rather hear the songs unfurl in their original order or simply bunched together in a glorious mess. Personally, I don't find this matter all that significant within Black Tambourine's work so I enjoy listening to the band's entire all-too-brief catalog in one shot.

Good on ya.

I'm digging this. It might fill a bit of the void I seem to have in my springtime music selection.

I was definitely considering making this thread yesterday, but didn't figure anyone would care about it. And actually Slumberland Records reissued Complete Recordings earlier this year, with demos for Ex-Lovers Only and Throw Aggi Off the Bridge and four songs recorded last year.

The Complete Recordings release was just reissued, for those curious. It's solid.

It might help if I actually read the thread before posting in it.

Oh damn, was unaware. They covered Buddy Holly and Suicide? Hmm.

It's a pretty fun cover of Dream Baby Dream. Admittedly, it's an eponymous disc, and no longer called "Complete Recordings" so it's easy to miss.

Love 'em. They picked a perfect time for the reissues. Cashin' in. haha

Glad to hear the cover's worthwhile, I'll scope the reissue out before I leave work tonight. Had I known, I'd have included that in the OP instead of Complete Recordings ha. So behind on this year's releases with work and school. Blah.

Can't say that I'm completely into it right off the bat, but I'll give them some more listens.

No idea how people juggle the two and have time left over to stay afloat on new releases. I'm exhausted just thinking about it. Least the semester's drawing to a close so I can catch up.

Back to the band in question, listened to them and Galaxie 500 all day. Shimmery goodness.

Oh, this is true. I didn't think about this. Yeah, I love the experience of an album from start to finish, but with an EP I usually care less about that.

I'm with you. I'm rocking a part time job, editor for the campus paper and a 18 credit hours. I'm dying, but I have the comfort of being in an office most of the day on campus, so I can do my work and listen to music simultaneously.

Same here, EPs typically don't offer the same type of immersion -- or this is how I process them -- so I don't mind if the order goes by the wayside.

How's the paper faring these days? I'm on the computer at work most days as well but usually too busy writing papers or manning phones to give music any measure of proper attention. It's been nice not having much to worry about in the past 2 days or so.

I'm legitimately mad that I forgot about this 'cause it's probably one of my favorite bands Vinh has made a thread for, but at least this is good autumn music, making this as good a time as any to pick Complete Recordings up.
