i came across this story on cnn and found it interesting. figured i'd see what people here thought of it.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/08/19/deerdecoy.crash.ap/index.html

to sum it up for those not wanting to click the link:

two boys, aged 16 and 17, stole a deer decoy and thought it'd be funny to put it in the middle of the road and watch cars swerve around it. then a car with two other teens in it hits the deer and ends up in a ditch, injuring both the teens in the car.

so, it goes to court and the judge decides to sentence the two teens who placed the deer in the road to 60 days in a juvenile jail.

but, here's the catch. it's one of those small towns that live for their high school football and both the boys are starters on the high school varsity football team, so the judge postpones their sentence until after the season. the judge was quoted as saying "I shouldn't be doing this, but I'm going to. I see positive things about participating in football."

so, is this fair? is that a line of shit? or is this just sending the wrong message proving that football players get preferential treatment?

thoughts?

sounds like nothing but a line of bullshit.

theres a lot of things that could provide "positive things", like community service.

whats so positive about it? Showing kids at such a young age that being good at sports will exempt you from societies laws?

total BS.

especially since it really fucked up the people in the car. if it was a really minor accident, MAYBE something could be worked out. There no way they should get a pass after something as serious as this though.

I've heard about this at other message boards, that's retarded. There's no way a teen should be exempt from any judgement of his actions because he or she plays a sport. Totally unacceptable, end of story.
