Do any of you know of any in the northeast/mid-atlantic area? I'd like to get in touch with one about an album i'll probably want to record over the end of this year/beginning of next. I say semi-professional meaning someone who knows what they're doing but doesn't restrict themselves to the conventions of stereotypical production, most likely self-taught and therefore retaining his/her own mixing and recording character, and open to experimental ideas. I specifically want someone who's not afraid to use a little reverb, looping, and intentionally excessive compression to create airy noises on top of the music. I'm looking for a unique, fairly well-rounded production job that pays special attention to the atmosphere of each song, the texture of individual tracks, and a solid range of dynamics, and is clean but isn't what you'd call polished or vocal-focused, and then i'll probably take it to get professionally mastered afterward. Think along the lines of Death Cab for Cutie's Transatlanticism (cliche, i know, but i love that album and it's production more than anything.) I also don't have a shit ton of money at my disposal but im willing to shell out an intermediate amount, maybe in the few/several-thousand range. It's obviously easiest if someone can recommend one in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area but I am willing to travel as far north as long island and as far south as north carolina for this. I'm working on an album I want to be my breakthrough and I want the right guy to help me get it sounding the way i envision it.

We did a record with Play/Work Productions out of Philadelphia. We spent $13k for 30 days at Big Sky Audio in Springield PA and Water Music in Hoboken NJ. This included the 2 producers that run Play/Work and mixing. They've done some really good records and know a ton of people.

Play/work has done some great work. I'll attest to it. A local band from my area worked with them and it turned out pretty great for pop-punk, if that's what you're looking for.

Not sure if it's quite what you're looking for though, OP.

Strangeways (http://www.strangewaysrecording.com/)!

Mike Poorman and Daryl Rabidoux (ex. Hod Rod Circuit and The Cancer Conspiracy, respectively). Awesome guys, and a fun time to work with. My band recorded a few songs with Poorman back in the day.

thanks for the recs guys, i really appreciate it. i'll be looking into those. i've also got my eye on Lord Baltimore Studios, they recorded a local shoegaze band called Thrushes and judging by their material it seems the studio will be able to do basically everything i want to do with my album with relative ease, though it might be a tad too polished.
