So I created a thread [ http://www.absolutepunk.net/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=65470352 ] about what I thought was wrong with music today. Because I'm not a completely negative music fan, I've created a what's great about music today thread. Here are a couple of promising things that are happening in the industry:
1. Universal Records lowering its price of CDs
http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2010/03/18/universal-announces-plan-to-lower-cd-prices-to-10-or-less/
2. A new Jimmy Eat World album in the works
3. Anberlin headlining tour for this summer
http://www.opusoneproductions.com/index.php/front/events/0/anberlin
4.

There are lots of great things about music today, but it comes from the artists, not from the industry.

You know what's great? There seem to be more good punk albums these days. There were a few years where I felt like everything in the scene had gone soft.
Some recent favorites:
1. Crime In Stereo
2. Pinsky
3. The Swellers
4. The Menzingers
5. Harvard
6. We Are the Union
Looking forward to the demise of neon.

Can you imagine how fucking awful that'd be if they started a band together though. Talk about the opposite of peanut butter and jelly.

The fact that there are record stores like Tunes in NJ where you can get 15 records for 10 bucks. And that there are old posers embarassed of their collections to I can load up on singer-songwriters, pop stars, disco, funk and Nat King Cole.

The same thing that has always enticed fans to the art, the chance to get lost in a world of emotion, colour, & dreams. To take a ride down any path of imagination, completely unrestricted by reality, but often relating. There is, & always has been, something deeply mysterious about music. The way it weaves through our minds & can often have such an enlightening impact on us. At times it's almost as if music creates it's own language, communicating an array of messages, some obvious, some lurking deep & subtle within the mood. The power music seems to have over our emotions & behavior shows that music cannot be ignored, whether as a cheap means of entertainment, or something more philosophical. There will always be a sound coming out of a pocket of the world somewhere that we, as individuals, will find magnetizing, reeling our minds in towards the romance of rhythm, melody, harmony, towards the rainbow of mystery, adventure, & charm.
I entirely hope I never lose the lust for discovery within the ethereal & beautiful world of music, because to deprive myself & my mind of such an insightful treasure would truly be a shame...

I love that you quoted this!
Another point I wanted to raise in here (or another thread) is what makes music such a sub-conscious & conscious communicator to the world. We only have to look at Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Fela Kuti, Curtis Mayfield, etc, to see the way they expressed the voices of a nation, continent, or the world. Why is it that their messages put to music manage to say much more than any speech, any image, often any experience can, why does their musical message impact upon a mass of individuals with such a strong connection.
I'm not expecting an answer from you mate. I'm sure we can both come up with multiple interpretations for this, & there's will be many avenues we're yet to explore. But to anyone in the know about said artists, & others, it just blows my mind the power of... music.
