Which of these masterpieces did you enjoy more? Discuss.

Shaking my head at people that say GoodFellas, but it'll probably be overwhelmingly more popular.

I love both for different reasons, but it's gotta be The Godfather overall.

Goodfellas was good until the coke was introduced into the story. It sucked after that point.\

Godfather I & II no question.

...debatable.

I feel that while the Godfather is the better 'cinematic experience', GoodFellas is much better at throwing you right in the middle of the story. Godfather has a feeling like you're watching from the outside in, GoodFellas make you feel like you're splitting lines with Liota.

granted, I've only seen it once, so my opinion may change with subsequent viewings.

but I agree with your second point.

I enjoyed The Godfather much more than Goodfellas. They're both good in their own ways, and there is certainly a different feel to each movie, like the previously mentioned perspective difference. I just can't fucking stand Ray Liotta; he killed that movie for me.

Godfather I & II over goodfellas. Goodfellas over godfather III. There all good movies tho.

Many (everyone) forgets that The Godfather Part III was nominated for Best Picture, among 6 other Academy Awards (7 total). Seven.

how do you compare these two movies though? If there was a Goodfellas Part II and a Goodfellas Part III then I could see the argument, you are basically taking 3 movies versus 1 as the overall rating prospect. Clearly that's what most people in this thread have done so far anyway.

Might as well make a thread and say

The Lord of the Rings or Avatar?

Ghost was nominated, too.

Wasn't exactly a strong year. ;-)

Hard to compare -- completely different tones, despite similar themes of family and whatnot.

Dances with Wolves, Awakenings, GoodFellas, The Godfather Part III, and Ghost isn't a down year, either. Point being, a 7-time nominated film that made 140 million dollars at the box office clearly shouldn't be shat on as much as it is 20 years later. It was a success with critics and fans that year and since, everyone has done nothing but compared it to the first two. Coppola himself said it was an epilogue and not the third part of a trilogy.

Oh, I know, I just never personally liked it. Truthfully, though, I've never worshipped the Godfather I or II like everyone else does, so I'm the wrong person to get an opinion from.

Part III is good, but really doesn't compare to the first two or stand-up to the strengths of Goodfellas. Doesn't mean it isn't a fine film; it simply isn't great. It contains more flaws than the other films discussed here. That's my take anyway.

He's asking the original Godfather against Goodfellas, not The Godfather Part I and II against Goodfellas. I see what you're saying, as The Godfather is inherently more complicated and sprawling with a wider focus than Goodfellas, but as they're both mafia movies, they're bound to be compared.

And you could make that thread, especially since Avatar will inevitably end up as a trilogy. Still, that thread might be pointless, since I'm pretty sure you'd have to be retarded to pick Avatar.

I remember watching an interview with a guy from the mob. He said that The Godfather is the way Hollywood views the mob, and Goodfellas is the way the mob actually runs.

Goodfellas.

Goodfellas is far more concise and to the point. You have to dedicate chunks of your life to get through Godfather.

ive thought about this quite a lot... the best answer i could ome up with is that they are two totally different films with different intentions and philosophies and therefore should not be compared. yes, they deal with the same subject matter but in radically different fashions. Goodfellas is a visceral sucker punch while the Godfather is a poetic and haunting slow burn.

Both films kick so much ass its a shame to even put the two up against each other.
