Good stuff. I'm not familiar with Cap'n Jazz, but maybe I should look them up. Also, I'm not sure if Saves the Day would be '90s emo...

OP you're only 15 what the fuck do you know? I'm a douchebag who thinks you have to reach a certain age to have an opinion.

But seriously, if Pinkerton is emo like some people say, this is relevant; that is one of my favourite albums ever.

everybody asks if i could be born in a different time when would i be born?
a lot of people say the sixties so i could be a hippie or whatever
well i was born in 91 and all i want is to be about seven years older so that i could have been at every single promise ring show and so i could
i wish i could have been with the get up kids from the start
and more recently, i have torn apart the long island music scene when taking back sunday and brand new were starting up

- i've been listening to Castevet a lot the past couple days. loooove the Summer Fences album!
- there's a local band from here called Jacket Weather (http://www.myspace.com/jacketweather) that are very much in the same vein as Mineral and American Football
- i could go on all day about this genre of music. i love it. however, there wasn't enough bands that caught on to it though. it was very short-lived. but i'm happy that labels like Count Your Lucky Stars is around to showcase newer talent.
- also, i recorded a song lastnight (http://theamorouscontact.bandcamp.com/track/summer-rain-demo) for a new project i'm working on. my take on 90s emo, i guess.

you missed the best one man: Maximillian Colby

Maximillion Colby was amazing. I actually just recently had a conversation with Ben Davis who was in Sleepytime Trio about them and how important all those bands were. Virginia is pretty much the capital (ill give San Diego a close second) of the screamy post-hardcore side of emo in my opinion. Majority Rule and Pg. 99 being two of my favorite bands from that sound/era.

Lovin' this thread, I'm sick of people saying bands like Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance are emo, so this thread makes an enjoyable read.

Here a few bands that (I think) haven't been mentioned yet and could broadly be classified as 90s (roughly) emo/screamo, Antioch Arrow, I Hate Myself, Pg.99, Benton Falls, Billy, Boilermaker, Boys Life, Cast Aside, City Of Caterpillar, The End Of Julia, Eniac, Falling Forward, Fugazi, The Gloria Record, Gray Matter, Hey Mercedes, Joan Of Arc, Indian Summer, Jets To Brazil, Knapsack, Mohinder, Park Ave. , Commander Venus, Planes Mistaken For Stars, Reuben's Accomplice, Samiam, Sense Field, Seven Storey Mountain, Slowride, The Walt Lariat, The White Octave, 1.6 Band, Benji, Kerith Ravine, the Others, Sunfactor.

Hopefully somebody will enjoy some of those recommendations.

I didn't think Saves the Day was emo either, but i read someone else mention them as emo, and i like Saves the Day, so i put em down. and Goo Goo Dolls don't really go in the emo category, but they've got some emo lyrics and "emotional" songs, so i put em down too.

emo essentially started out as hardcore punk for sissies, and then moved on into two directions: hardcore punk for *real* sissies, and hardcore punk with vocals reminiscent of young girls who just found their cat run over on the street.

none of those mainstream rock bands have anything to do with emo whatsoever. well, okay. Jimmy Eat World put out a couple of emo sounding records, then they sold out and made it big on MTV etc.

Saves the Day on the other hand is one of those poppy alternative bands who borrow a great deal of their sound from bands like Jimmy Eat World and The Get Up Kids who kind of sort of has some roots in emo music, but eventually moved on to poppy super cleanly produced alternative rock.

Lets not all be pedantic because some bands being mentioned are not quite 90s. Lets just talk about emo when it was decent and good and didnt involve eyeliner or auto-tune

Saves The Day, Jimmy Eat World, Get Up Kids and Far (if that counts, everybody seems to class them as something different)

oh, nothing's wrong with it (obviously I'm a fan), I was just hoping this would be a 90's emo thread, based on the title
btw the one's with stars are the one's you should check out first, I think

You or I or someone could start a revival thread if you want them separate. I own a lot more recent stuff than 90s actually.

Brave Bird is a fantastic band from emo that draw a lot of influence from stuff mentioned in this thread: http://bravebird.bandcamp.com/album/ready-or-not-ep

They're part of a collective of Ann Arbor emo bands: http://annarboremo.tumblr.com/

Cap'n Jazz is a filthy band. Been into them for a while.

I checked out Mineral again two days ago, which is another good band. 90's were sick.

don't really see how sharks keep moving were a revival band. they didn't play emo. they sounded like ghosts and vodka, or an instrumentally subdued minus the bear without vocals. cool band doe

State your case - why should we exclude midwestern emo? Is it not "real" enough for you? To me emo is emo, regardless of where it's from. However, I'm interested to hear your take on it.

what? I wasn't trying to discriminate against more modern, indie-fied emo like you think I seem to be doing...
it just seems to me like the over-obvious and cliche midwestern emo like SDRE and Mineral and Braid, American Football, etc. etc. get lots of exposure already and I was sad that this looks sorta just like another midwestern emo thread instead of something different :-(

Haha, that's not what I thought you were doing. I was merely asking why you would rather discuss non-midwestern emo as opposed to what you're calling the "cliche midwestern emo." You just made your point by stating you'd rather discuss other 90s emo bands that aren't traditionally discussed, which I appreciate. I really just wanted more clarification as to what you wanted to discuss. What bands specifically are you referring to?

any discussion about mid-90's emo stuff like Antioch Arrow, Maximillian Colby, Moss Icon, Native Nod, Navio Forge, or later (late 90's early 2000's) screamo along the lines of Off Minor, Ten Grand, sailboats, Honeywell, City of Caterpillar, would be surprisingly nice :-)

sorry to misunderstand ya

The only bands I've listened to out of that list is Moss Icon and City of Caterpillar and that was quite awhile ago. I do remember liking them, but I was probably just getting into them and life got in the way. Will be listening to them again though.

***edit: excuse me for barfing all over this thread. i just found a more current discussion for this. i guess this is my catalouge, haha.***

After enjoying reading this thread and soaking up the obscure band recs, I broke down my favorite 25 or so emo bands. Put way too much time into it, yeah :P The ones with asterisks could be considered other genres, but they have some good, solid emo influences. You'll probably end up loving a few of the derivatives and hating the rest haha. The ones with crosses are ones I don't think anyone here mentioned. Great stuff and not listed in any particular order. I could never figure one out.

*disclaimer—they're not all 90s bands, nor are they strictly MWest emo. some derivatives thereof. this seemed to be the most relevant thread.*

Def check out these lesser-knowns #0, 4, 5, 10, 15, 16, 19, 24.

My Top Emo Bands
0 Further Seems Forever (cmon, T&N signed some of the best bands. amazing debut album. hands-down top 3 emo album ever. listen to it! that's why it's #0)
1 The Appleseed Cast (Ring Wars era)
2 Benton Falls
3 Sunny Day Real Estate
4 Terminal†* (don't write them off as too poppy!)
5 Anadivine†* (some of the best musicians all around, really)
6 Armor For Sleep (Dream To Make Believe only)*
7 American Football
8 Mineral (found POF in a local record store for 4 bucks. life changed)
9 Shiner*
10 Six Gallery†* (very mathy, not entirely emo. amazing guitars and vocals. and drums. and bass. yeah.)
11 Emery (Weak's End only)
12 Mae (Destination Beautiful only)*
13 My Epic* (least emo of all, but very much indebted to the scene. great songwriters.)
14 The Lyndsay Diaries†* (acoustic emo. perfect for rainy days, which you'd think most emo is already, so that's saying something.)
15 Time Spent Driving† (can't believe nobody has mentioned them!)
16 Anophora† (only have a demo up. amazing amazing band!)
17 Camber (SDRE soundalike, but hey, SDRE didn't stick around long enough :P)
18 Desert City Soundtrack (old stuff is sloppy as hell, but hey)
19 Juno† (amazing emo. cmon, gotta know Juno!)
20 Unsent Letters† (student of my dad's when i was in grade school. first introduced myself to him way after his emo days. great vocals, kinda like ben folds in an emo setting :P)
21 dieradiodie† (just a demo. great free track on a fan-created purevolume.)
22 Edison Glass†* (they're only minimally emo. too many influences to count for them. their one vocalist has a great emo-y voice though)
23 The Evan Anthem† (very cool)
24 And Then There Were None†* Crazy amazing emotronica :D Great tunes on their first and only LP
