Sup gear-tards. I'm playin bass in a band called Sons of God (myspace.com/wearesonsofgod) and I'm stuck between what compression to use. I'm playin' a Fender Jaguar bass with an Ampeg SVT 450 and and 810 cab.

I was thinkin about getting a Barber Tone Press or stickin with Keeley compression. Both sound great, but is the Keeley worth the money?

For recording... getting a nice preamp with a solid compressor built in.

For live purposes... why would you really need a compressor unless you just have poor technique? The amp / cab / distortion(if any) naturally creates a large amount of compression. Compressing even more creates a muddy, flat, and unclarified sound.

The only reason I can see for using a compressor on bass live would be if you play very soft jazz or something similar....

Skip the compressor. Keep your transients. Use good technique.
