Icon? He made one excellent film in Clerks and has yet to come near it.

Not even close to an icon, what a silly (see:dumb) question.
little bit of both
he had the luck of emerging at a time where his work became part of the independent film revolution, and clerks (and to a lesser extent chasing amy) is certainly an important film for its era. but he hasn't really delivered on his early promise, and has been content to continue cashing in on the same fan base for years.

I enjoy a few of his movies, and find his type of humor to be very funny, but I don't think he'll be remembered as one of the better directors of our time.

I like clerks. I don't know what his real name is, but my brother met Jay a while ago at some party, he said he talks just like he does in the movies

I think he's going to be one of those directors we look back on when we're older and say "I loved his movies. Dick and fart jokes were the bomb."
I think he should write something like Chasing Amy again.

He's one of my favorite directors.
Anyone worried about him retreading through "the jersey saga" again don't worry.
He's doing a full on horror movie next.

But he's not an icon. Well, "Geek Icon", maybe. Comic Book Superfan, sure, but icon? No.

I like Kevin Smith a lot, especially after seeing his Evening Out movie, but.. I don't think he'll be widely remembered.

Excellent screenwriter, mediocre director.
Icon? Nowhere near it.
